Comments: Are you guys still around? I have most of my hair and teeth, some grey matter still lingers between the ears, and am still trying to decide what to do when I grow up. I received a BS in Physics 1966, Juris Doctor in 1976 (San Francisco Law School). Daughter #1 Cindy, (Momma Number 1) graduated from Cal. State Northridge with BA in Psychology, (my alma mater); Daughter #2 Gretchen Michelle (Momma number 2), graduated from Harvard 89 or so with BA in American History and BA in English Literature; Daughter #3 Maureen Jolie (Momma number 2) received Bachelor of Fine Arts and BA in philosophy from Parson's School of Fine Arts Albany, NY, recently completed her Masters In Art, from Bahaus School of Art, Weimar, Germany. I do have somethings justifying the bragging above, though it is very apparrent to me that the girls had remarkable mothers. However, I claim the above approaches the level of Dusty's landing at Fairchild AFB that cold winter's eve so long ago.
I was shocked to review some Thule activity on the tube a few years ago, where some Thule based AREF supported deep interdiction flights of recon aircraft (RB-47 and RB-52 apparently) into the Soviet Union's polar regions. Does this mean that I can claim that I invaded the Soviet Union during my military career? The TV documentary said Ike wasn't aware of the missions, like he wasn't aware of Francis P. and his U2 either. What ticked me off wasn't the fact of keeping Ike in the dark, hell I knew nothing, except, of course, that we immediately headed south every time after we crossed the North Pole. I should have noticed that dead give away. Ah, the sweet ignorance of youth, yet how my dreams suffer at the horror of it now. What does that say about it all I wonder? Ted Kulak asked me if I (we) had violated the Soviet frontier in the polar region after returning from a mission. I was directed to a whining complaint in a Moscom shortwave propagabnda report claiming I was guilty of some fucking war crimes, or worse. "Bullshit", I said, "dirty lying commie bastards."
Even if I did invade the Soviets, the statute of limitations has long expired, so if I did it, or if I didn't do it, either way I (we) still walk, right?
Andy

Comments: Assigned to the Separation and Recruiting Office. Sergeant Matthews was NCOIC. The office processed all discharges and reenlistments for the 509 Bomb Wing and subordinate units, as well as tenant units on Walker AFB. I remember the day in June l950 when the Chinese crossed the border with Korea. The Police Action was on. We first termers received an extension of our enlistments to serve an extra year. I was assigned to Walker AFB out of basic training as an Airman Third Class. Promoted to Airman Second Class, Airman First Class then to Staff Sergeant before discharge in July l952. Enlisted in the USAF Reserve in l959 and completed thirty four years of active and reserve service. Retired as Chief Master Sergeant.

I am a RN caring for a veteran named "Jimmie Blackstock". He is not always able to talk but is still sharp. He says he was stationed at Roswell/ Walker around '47 and I think was with the 393rd.
I respect the veterans I care for and Jimmie's a great guy. I have his and his family's permission to try to work up some service history on him. Email with any help, Andrew rock_bustin@yahoo.com

Comments: One of your postings inquires about a bomber lost on a navigational flight out of Lakenheath in March, 1951. I had guarded a plane - which I recall having a tail number ending in 840 - on several occasions and remember that one day the plane left on what appeared to be a routine training mission. It never returned and so far as I can recall, nothing was ever learned about where it had been when it disappeared. If memory serves me correctly, the plane's lower surfaces were painted a dull black, while the rest of the aircraft remained silver.
To be honest, I do not remember a great deal about the crew of this aircraft, but I do recall a sense of loss at their disappearance. Thus, I deduce that they were not hard to get along with.

509th BW .B-29/B-50 deployments to England |

Robbie Robinson wrote on 2005-03-23 15:07:14.0
Comments: Sir, I am researching material for a book about the B-29/B-50 deployments to England during the Cold War era, 1947-1953. The 509th Bomb Group started to arrive in England from 1947 and a/c 44-27300 arrived in 1948,it was one of the early " Silverplate" modified atomic bombers and was once named ' Strange Cargo 'when assigned to the 509th Composite Group and serving alongside ' Enola Gay '. At this time and for some years later ,the 509th was the USAF,s only Atomic Bomber group. When '300' arrived it was still wearing the 'Circle Arrow' tail markings. The 509th visited England from May-Aug 1949 and two squadrons ,393rd and 715th went to RAF Marham and the 830th Squadron to RAF Lakenheath, along with the 509th ARSq as the 509th and 43rd Units had basically pionered the USAF,s Air to air refuelling..These atomic bombers lacked gun turrets except for the tail armament and in those days were pinted black on the undersurfaces with red outer wings and tail unit. When visiting again from Feb to May 1951 and went to ,393rd-Lakenheath,715th -Sculthorpe,830th-Mildenhall and the 509th ARSq-RAF Wyton. Some aircraft were now to be seen with the newly allocated " Triangle C " tail markings and atleast a few B-50,s were now assigned to the unit. In 1952 the third deployment was made and this time B-50,s and KB-29P,s and still with the " Triangle C" tail markings. I wondered if anyone would be so kind as to inform me of the exercises details please and I would also like to borrow photos please ,to assist me with the artwork for the book. All material on loan to me will be returned to the rightful owner. I will be very grateful for any possible help. yours sincerely, Robbie Robinson.

I drove a Yellow 48 Studebaker convertible that everyone seemed to know me by. Would love to hear from anyone whom I drank with or fought with. Hung out a lot in the airmans clubs drinking that God awful green beer. I was just a skinny kid of 18 at the time.
