KOREAN AIRLIFT |
| JOHN VARALLO wrote on May 10, 2005 CITY AND STATE: MAYSLANDING NJ UNIT: 325TH MTR. VEH. SQ. SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN Comments: I was stationed at McChord from Dec.1950 to June 1951. When I got there I was told that the base was the state side terminus for the Korean airlift. I was a ground Power Mech. and serviced all the grnd. pwr. equipment on the base. The 4th. T.C. and the Canadian 426th T.C.Sq. were just two of the sqs. I have not seen very much on this subject and would like to know if anyone has such info. I do know that Mc Chord was part of the Great circle route to Japan. MATS Pacific div. brought wounded in to there from Korea. The base was in direct support of the war but very little is written about McChord. Keywords: |

| JAMES BURNS wrote on August 19, 2004 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: 14TH TCS SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN - KOREA Comments: I was assigned to McChord AFB out of radar school-Biloxi in 1951. Unit had just returned from Berlin Airlift and had several C-54s which were then involved with transport flights to Japan. We had a large shop and very little radar to work on so we picked up radio gear to service. Many of the techs were sent to other depts. such as engineering, quartermaster.clerical etc. one group was shipped to Japan-plane crashed in British Columbia. Unit moved to Moses Lake in 1952-newly constructed -out in the middle of nowhere-started getting C-124s-finally some radar! Very different country for a boy from back east. discarged in 1954. | BOB PEDERSEN wrote on February 11, 2003 CITY AND STATE: AMARILLO TX UNIT: 4TH TROOP CARRIER SQDN. 62ND TC GROUP SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN - KOREA Comments: I joined the 4th troop carrier squadron (62nd TC group) at McChord AFB, Tacoma Washington, in August of 1950. In November of 1950 we were sent to Ashiya Japan for 90 days TDY. WE were to be replaced by another squadron of the 62nd, but as each of our 90 days were up, we were extended for another 90 days. We were later moved to Tachikawa. Then two sqadrons of the 61st TC group were sent to tachikawa on permanent change of station. We were then redesignated the 14th TC squadron in the 61st TC group. The squadron of the 61st left at Mc Chord was redesignated the 4th TC squadron Of the 62nd TC group. I was a flight engineer on our C-54 aircraft and left the squadron in January of 1952 and returned to the states on combat crew rotation. During the time I was a member of this unit, the only aircraft we flew was C-54 skymasters. Keywords: The TDY squadron |

4TH TROOP CARRIER SQUADREN (H) |
| ROBERT S. FELTON wrote on July 6, 2002 CITY AND STATE: EVANSTON IL UNIT: 4TH TROOP CARRIER SQ. (H) SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN - KOREA Comments: I reported for duty as an instrument mechanic to the 4th Troop Carrier Squadron (H) at Larson A.F.B. Moses Lake Washington in the late summer of 1952. At that time the 4th, 7th and 8th Troop Carrier Squadrons were part of the 62nd Group and 62nd Wing. It was my understanding that the squadron, then designated as the 14th T.C.S. had served in the Berlin Airlift while stationed at Rhine/Main (Frankfurt, a.m.). Upon return to the U.S. the squadron, operating C-54s was assigned to McChord A.F.B. in Spokane. A time came when the squadron was re-designated as the 4th and the designation 14th was assigned to the former 4th at Tachakawa Japan. I believe that it was in 1950 that the squadron was assigned C-124 aircraft and transferred to Larson A.F.B. Washington. During my years in the 4th, the squadron participated in many outstanding missions including Operation Bali Hi, the first (and probably the only) Around the World Troop Carrier Mission, taking French paratroops from France to what was then Indo China and proceeding back to the U.S. across the Pacific. Other missions included taking Radar equipment from Fairbanks to Point Barrow, Alaska. Annually, the West Point Cadets were taken tour of the various military bases. The unit often participated is training missions involving dropping such units as the 101st and the 82nd Airborne Divisions. In addition there were the typical Troop Carrier missions such as moving various units and equipment from one base to another. One such mission involved moving the Atomic Cannon from one location to another. There were feed drops to cattle isolated by severe weather, various alerts, trips to Panama, Europe and the Far East. I was discharged in September of 1955 and lost track of the unit at that time. Keywords: C-124 Globmaster |

SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN - KOREA Comments: I left Tacoma Air Base in Wash. in Jan 1951 and joined the 4th Troop Carrier Squadron at Ashiya Japan. The unit was redesignated the 14th TCS after some months and we moved to Tachikawa Air Base near Tokyo. The unit was again redesignated the 21st TCS. I left the unit in July 1953. I believe all the squadrons were part of the 62nd TCGroup out of Tacoma Washington.I went to the 4th TCS for 62 days temporary duty, but once in FEAF you stay. I stayed 30 months the longest that anyone could officially stay according to General MacArthur at that time. Keywords: |
