Comments: I had the pleasure of meeting the heros who made history during those years. We experienced hardships of living in tents in zero weather, sleeping in trenches while the enemy through hand granades at us from bi-planes.We Called him Bed-Check Charlie. We were flying and Airplane that hadd very little spare parts because the F-86 was put into combat before our fly-away kits were readdy. But our leaders were the best. Col Jack Ratti, Capt Baily, Col Gabreski, these are just a few. My old mind just is not what it used to be.
God Bless the 4th but First
Keywords: I joined the 4th Supply Sqdn at New Castle Cnty Airport. We flew by C-82's and C-119 across the USA to California. This trip is one I will never forget. We blew a tire on take-off from New Castle. We faced head winds that forced us to land in New Mexico. When we took off and tried to gain sufficient altitude to cross the mountains we blew an engine. When we were landing at Anchorage Alaska we blew a tire and had to wait for them to bring a new one. When we finally landed in Tokyo Japan it was a welcome sight. I was with the 4th up and down South Korea. First Puson, than Suwon, then back to Japan when we lost the Air Bases. Back to Suwon and finally Kimpo where we stayed until I was sent back to the States. All this time we were TDY and when I got back to the States they did'nt know what to do with me. I wouldn't trade this experience for anything in this world.

Comments: Captain Kenneth D. Chandler shot down a MIG-15 in North Korea in December 1951 over Cho-do area. His aircraft, however, was disabled by a MIG's debree ingested into his F-86's engine, knocking it out. He bailed out over the off-shore island of Cho-do. I was stationed there with a US Air Force combat intelligence unit as an interpreter. I happened to be on the beach that day, supervising unloading of a US Navy landing craft. When I saw a Sabre pilot bail out over the Cho-do Bay, I and another Korean airman rowed out into the bay in a row-boat and waited for him. When Capt. Chandler (probably) fell into the water, we grabbed him and pulled him into the boat. We rowed him to a waiting US Navey helicopter and delivered him to safety and home. I am looking for Capt. Chandler if he is the one I rescued and if he is still alive. (He should be between 85 to 90 years old now.) Appreciate any help. Ted Kim, Edmonds, WA.

Dear Mr. Barker:
I am looking for information about my biological father. Attached is a
photograph of him with my mother, Fumiko Muira taken on March 2,
1951. He was stationed at Johnson Air Force Base, where my mother
worked as a seamstress.
He died in Korea, at the frontline, before Fumiko was able to tell him
that she was pregnant. I was born, Toyohiko Muira, in Kawagoe-shi,
on September 8, 1952.
I do not know my father's name, except that Fumiko called him
D.Ki. My mother Fumiko died on March 20, 1956 in a traffic accident.
On August 13, 1956 I was adopted by M. Sgt Jerome F. Renk, AF13011156,
Det 3, 1st Air Postal Sq, APO 994, USAF and his wife Wilma Renk. They
knew Fumiko from the base. Shortly after my adoption we returned to the
United States. I had a good childhood with my adoptive parents.
Eventually I graduated from Cornell University with a Ph.D. in Physics.
Out of respect, I never asked them about my adoption and they never
spoke of it. They have since passed on.
In 1989 I was able to locate Fumiko's younger sister Takako. We wrote to
each other for 7 years, until the fall of 1996 when my wife, daughter
and I were able to visit her in Japan. There I met the rest of my
Japanese family. It was a most profound experience.
I lived with Takako and my Japanese grandparents in Kyushu for the first
3.5 years of my life. Takako was able to tell me a great deal about my
mother Fumiko and my early life in Japan. She gave me the photograph of
my father. Hearing stories about my mother made me realize how much like
her I am. I would like to know the same about my father. Unfortunately
no one in the family knew my father.
I was told that my father worked as some type of war correspondant,
perhaps with radios.
He most likely had blue or green eyes, since my daughter has pale green
eyes.
I was hoping that through the Korean Project someone might see this
photograph, recognize my father and/or mother and contact me. Any
information would be appreciated.
Is it possible to get a list of those KIA in the USAF in Korea during
1952?
I have made several attempts on the web but remain unsuccessful. I am
not sure how best to approach this search for my father. Any
suggestions would be helpful.
Sincerely,
Timothy Jerome Renk
