Comments: My father-in-law, Raymond Ramsey, was with the 428th from 53-54. He was a pilot, a Colonel, and, we believe, the squadron commander. He died June 2002 and we found several items in his possesions with the buccaneer logo. Does anyone know the history of the logo; who designed it and when? Thank you.

Comments: I arrived on Jan-10-52 as flight mechanic for a B-25 and was assigned to the 90th bomb Sqdn but was soon transferred to a F-84 squadron. I was a F-84 crew chief in Baker flight,49th FBS, along with Bill Smar, Dion Berlin, and George Bagwell. They all rotated to the 438Th FIS at Kinross, MI. with me. Dion still lives at the "SOO" and Bill is in Chicago. This past Memorial Day,I received the new Korean War Service Medal at a local ceremony.I remember Korea as if it were yesterday but I would gladly do it again. I have color slides of F-84's and B/W pics of B26 nose art.

He was in the Air Force, 49th Fighter Bomber Wing in Japan, then sent to Korea, attached to the army. He thinks it was The First Cavalry Div., 24th Infantry?

He remembers last names of a few.. Inan, Jacks, Clark, and Moses Barr. Please email me with any info, I'm his daughter.

Thank you!!

General unit messages

Brief Background

Some brief background: According to 'The Korean Air War' (Dorr and Thompson , 1994):

"On 16 March 1953, FEAF put to work its new concept of a fighter-bomber wing (reinforced) with some important changes in establishment designations (a USAF wing, as purists know, is an "establishment" and not a "unit").

Prior to this date, Teagu (alias K-2) had been home to both the 49th and 58th FBWs. Now, the two were consolidated into the 58th FBW (Reinforced)

The 49th FBW was replaced on 1 April by the 474th FBW consisting of the 428th, 429th and 430th FBSs. This confusing adjustment was accomplished for the purpose of easing maintenance and support problems."
