Comments: My father, Capt Freeman told my mother, Romanich didn't return from a night mission. All of the airmen were to go home after 55 combat missions. I have a small photo of these 3 officers dated 30Nov51 near the barracks. I need a confirmation they were in the 452nd together? Who was the CO at K9 squadron? Are there any details on this unit? Request any books written by anyone in the 452nd.

Comments: I was with the Air Installations Crash Rescue Sqdrn. of the 452nd. Bomb Wing (light) at George AB, ItazukeAB, MihoAB, and Pusan(K-9). When the wing broke up, Wally Hignett and myself were transferred to the 67th. Tactical Recon Wing at Kimpo (K-14)Crash Rescue. If anyone from either wing remembers me, I would like to hear from them.

Comments: I'm writing a movie script describing the 452nd deployment out of Long Beach. I'm looking for possible collaborators for the story, as well as stories of any hardships brought on and conquered by the reserve status of the 452nd. As part of the movie, I'd like to see another one, two or three B-26 Invaders rennovated and made flight-ready, in Korean War colors. I really liked the stories I heard in Nashville, and I would love some more input from the 728th, 729th, 730th and 731st crews. Also, if you ever had any contact during the conflict with any of these men, I'd like to hear from you, too.

Remembering K-9 in 1952-1953

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
clyde kobberdahl wrote on 2000-09-11 21:59:55.0

Comments: I was stationed at K-9 from March, 1952 to April, 1953 serving as Ground Safety Officer within the Personnel Office--also did some time as Training Officer working under Lt.Col. Moley. During much of my time at K-9, Col. Clinton Wasem was Wing Commanding Officer. Col. Nye preceded Col. Wasem and my memory tells me that Col. Nye was shot down and lost forever during a daring daylight B-26 raid north of the 38th parallel. Prior to Col.Nye's command, the Wing was designated the 452nd Bomb Wing under the command of Col.Albert Fletcher. Col. Fletcher was killed when he augered into the side of a mountain, flying a B-26, on his way to Tokyo--my recollection is that he flew into the side of Mt. Fuji in heavy weather, but my memory could stand repair on this. Col. Fletcher was great to me when I reported for duty at K-9 as a young 2nd Lt.--I admired him greatly, especially the way in which he conducted Wing Staff meetings every morning. Another super guy I recall was Col. Lindley. His first name eludes me just now, but he was much admired by all who knew him. He worked under Col. Wasem if I remember correctly. As Ground Safety Officer, my right hand guy was M/Sgt. James R. McClure, or "Mac." He became a lifelong friend and for those who might have known him, I regret to say that "Mac" passed away down at his home in Montgomery, Alabama about 3 years ago. I still have quite a number of colored slide photos that I took at K-9 and in the general Pusan area and I occasionally take a look at them and remember the days and the time spent in South Korea--and remember Kim-Chee, Jo-Sans, etc. And it's fun to remember, too, the "R.& R." trips to Japan--Nagoya, Fukuoka, and, of course, Tokyo. It will be greatly appreciated if anyone who served at K-9 during the time-frame referred to will get in touch with me and share some of your rememberances with me.

THEODORE A. (Ted) BAKER wrote on 1998-11-20 00:00:00.0

Comments: Hal or Ted,

I can't begin to tell you what joy your K/W Project efforts have bestowed upon me.

I flew night intruder operations with the 452nd Bomb Wing during the K/W and for many years have mourned the loss of some my closest friends in combat.

You can only image my surprise when I came across the MIA-Camp 3 message.

This crew was working over a North Korean main supply route in a valley a few miles from my assigned route that night. After a terse radio message from Cecil Brandsted (the pilot) that he had spotted some enemy road traffic and was initiating an attack, there followed silence.

Several of the later flights that night were diverted to the area in a search effort, but to no avail.

It has always been a mystery. They simply vanished without a trace.

The fact that a North Korean farmer spotted three men under armed guard in the vicinity the following day lends credence to the fact that there may have been survivors.

Of course, now the question is where are they, or what happend to them?

Anyway, I just want to thank you for your efforts. It has to be a labor of love. There just aren't that many people (that I know of) that even know where Korea is, let alone remember the Korean War.

May you be richly blessed in the coming years.

Note from Ted Baker, former pilot for unit:
" One other thing, the 452nd Bomb Wing became the 17th Bomb Wing in early 1952. It was a paper transfer, men and aircraft remained at K-9. By law, the 452nd Reserve Bomb Wing had to be deactivated (on paper) at the termination of their federal recall period and given a new designation. "

I was in the 452nd Bomb Wing (Light) in Japan and Korea from Oct
1950 to Apr 1952. We were reservists activated at the 2347th AFRTC
in Long Beach Ca. on 10 Aug 1950.

Am especially interested history of the unit during the period
described above. As the 50th anniversary of the activation is only
3 years away, I am seeking any information that might be available
regarding a half-century reunion.

Sir,
I arrived at Pusan(K-9) in December 1951. I had just turned 21. I
belive the Squadron was the 23 Bomb Sq. I spent at least 6 months in
Miho, Japan in Consolidated maintance(REMCO). At 21 I was more instered
in girls than I was in what the airplanes were doing. For 6 months all
I did was use CarbonTetraChrolide to clean engine distributors.

The only person that I remember is a large man we called "Pappy"
Neer(sic). He had a big handle-bar mustache. I was on DS to Miho, Japan
in mid-1952.

In the Winter Korea was snowy and/or muddy. We had one pilot named Mud
(not real name) would always write "mud in the cockpit" as if the
ground crew never cleaned the inside of the plane. So, one day "Pappy"
Neer(sic) was waiting for the plane to land.

He was on top before the pilot or co-pilot could unbuckle. He looked at
the log-book and there was the "mud in cockpit". Pappy grabed Capt. Mud
by the chute harness and dropped him from the plane. After several
hours with both Mud and Pappy in the Commanders office, Pappy came out
and entered in the log as the corrective measure "Mud removed from
cockpit."

I am helping a friend search for information about her brother, who was
lost in the Korean War. His name was Wilford Theodore Cook, and he
was apparently shot down on or about 3/22/52. His ID number was
AO2065517 and he was with the 452nd bomb wing in the USAF.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
