Comments: My father (Don Cook) recently passed away and I am looking for some history and photos from the 428th Buccaneers. He was an aircraft electrician. He had a passion for military aircraft and we heard many stories of his time in the Air Force. Would love to here and see more.

Best regards, Don Cook

Comments: My Grandfather, Col. Frederick Bongard recently passed away. I have a photo of him standing next to an F-84G following his 100th mission. The plane has the large black #'s -428 under the cockpit. Is this the unit #?. Thanks.

Comments: I was an F-84 crew chief.A/1C at the time. Not sure if it was Baker or Charly flight. Our line shack had a sign over the door "Waldorf Asstoria". Coworkers were Smar,Adshead,Kuhn, Urroz, Weimals,Lambert.I think TSgt.Kilgore was flight chief, but not sure.I was reunited with Bill Smar, Dion Berlin, George Bagwell and others at Kinross AFB in Sault St.Marie,Michigan.Arrived K-8 in late 52 and rotated in November 53. Have been in touch with guys from the 429FBS and others from the 474th. They held a reunion at Dayton,Ohio in 2000 and another in Las Vegas this past September. They had a great web site listed under 474th FBG but that address has changed and I do not have that address at this time. You might reach it a kalaniosullivan.com. I think kalanio and others were instrumental in setting up the site originally. Have several color slides of that period of my life and look at them sometimes. Never forget those days but was happy to leave. I understand Kunsan is a thriving city now but I have no inclination to return, but am proud I was there. I turned 21 Jan 20th,1953 and one of the pilots brought me a fifth of whiskey which I shared with the others in the "barracks" around the oil stove. I would like to hear from anyone that was there at the same time.

Comments: Arrived in Japon late 1951 & was assigned to the 116 FBW, 128 FBS, weapons/armorer mechanic. In late spring or early summer of '52 we were transfered to K-8. We also had our designation changed to the 474 FBW, 428 FBS. Stayed there till early April '53 then transferred to March AFB, 22 BW (M), 22 A&E Sqdn. When I first arrived at the 428th I was supprised that I was in a Georgia ANG Sqdn, There was a few regular AF types assiged already but not many. Another suprise was that when the aircraft would return from a mission they would raisethe Stars and Bars flag. It was actualy at Misawa AFB that I was given the nick name of Radar. That was because I was I tall and I couldn't get the hang of the low wing of the 84. So when I stood up I would hit the wing and bounce off. And thats how I got my nickname. So far I have found three comrades in arms who I had served with of which two don't remember me. Thats what 50 years does to ones mind. Loved the Air Force, F-84-D & E's and the experience of comradery. Radar......

Comments: I had contact Via E-mail with Mr Presely about a year ago concerning late war F84 operations and he was kind enough to respond to me witha letter describing K2 and the switchover between the 49th FBG and the 474th. He served in the 7thFBS/428thFBS between April and December 1953. I would like to contact him regarding permission to have his E-mail published on a web sit devoted to the F84 Thunderjet, (www.f84thunderjet.com) so others interested can gain from his experiences. I have tried the E-mail address he gave me at the time but keep getting an error message that it is not a valid address. If he or any one out there who knows him would contact me regarding this I would appreciate it greatly. thank you Robert J Anderson AEC(AW) USN

Interested in meeting anyone that was in the 428TH between June of 1952
and January of 1953 to swap stories and memories. I am also very
interested in what happened to the squadron after January '53.

Have heard a couple of stories but don't know which is accurate.
