RESEARCHING 36TH FBS F-86'S FEB-JUNE 1953 |
| MICHAEL PERRY wrote on April 5, 2007 CITY AND STATE: PEORIA AZ UNIT: VA-128, CV-63, VR-54 SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: NAVY VETERAN Comments: My uncle (mother's brother) was Raoul P. Mouton Jr. He flew the F-86F Sabre with the 36th FBS out of K-13, Suwon, Korea, from Feb. 1953 until his death in a C-124 crash June 18, 1953. I got curious as to what the Bureau number of "Junior's" F-86 was and what name he might have given his aircraft. I've seen a lot of great websites on the 36th FBS and just had the honor and pleasure of talking to Lt. Col Jim James(Ret.)who was in Queen Flight with Junior in 1953. My research has led me to create a spreadsheet compiling 36th FBS pilot names, their aircraft Bureau numbers, and their aircraft names (if any, Col. James said he didn't name his Sabre). I will be happy to share this spreadsheet with anyone who is interested in the 36th FBS from 1953. If anyone can contribute names and bureau numbers of 36th FBS F-86F aircraft from Feb. to June 1953, I would greatly appreciate it. Keywords: 36th FBS, K-13, F-86F, 1953 |

1ST LIEUT. EUGENE R. HANSEN |
| MATT HANSEN wrote on June 2, 2006 CITY AND STATE: LINCOLN NE UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: I'm searching for anyone who knew or flew with my grandfather's brother 1st Lieut. Eugene Ralph Hansen. He served with the 36th Fighter Bomber Squadron based out of Itazuke AB in Japan. On July 7, 1950, he was on a mission flying an F80C over North Korea with several other guys and while strafing a ground column his plane was hit. He bailed out but his parchute was never observed to open. His remains were recoved in 1951 and returned to Fremont, Nebraska, for burial in March 1952. Although the KORWALD Loss Indicent Report lists the tail number of his aircraft as unknown, someone has posted an "editorial comment" here on the website that it was 49-599. If anyone can help me confirm this information I would appreciate it. I would love to visit with anyone who knew him, so if you did please get it touch with me. I had painted on the nose " Joanie's Modeleer" and a bumble bee. I have lost the name of my crew chief. Does anyone remember the aircraft and crew chief's name? We had had some problems with engine surges before it was shot down, and the crew chief was afraid that it's loss was due to that problem, but that was not the case. (Glass was hit by ground fire.) My uncle was an F-86 pilot in the squadron who became MIA and I've had the distinct privilege hearing from his fellow pilots, and would now like to hear the perspective from those who maintained the F-86Fs as well as those who loaded the bombs and ammo onto the planes. My uncle, in his letters, spoke highly of those who took care of the aircraft and spent lots of his free time on the flight line learning from them. Also, I have a website about my uncle with colored photos of the 36th FBS on it. | ARPAD OSTHEIMER wrote on May 26, 2000 CITY AND STATE: AVON CT UNIT: 8TH FBW, 36TH FBSQ. SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN - KOREA Comments: I was a member of the 36th FBS when it was formed in 1950 before the Inchon landing. This squadron was formed to enable many of the pilots in the 8th FBW to go back to F-51D`s. The 8th received F-80`s in May 1950 and had very little on the aircraft when combat operations started. The loss rate was very high and in July and early August we lost three 8th FBW squadron commanders. The 36th FBSq. was formed and operating at Tsuiki air base in northern Kyushu. Our squadron commander was Major William O`Donnell. The unit followed the Inchon landing and set up operations at or near Yungdung Po. We then moved to either K-23 or K-24 near Pyongyang. The Chinese then threw us out and we moved back to Suwon. I was on the last flight out of Suwon (C-54) as the Chinese closed in on the strip. During the loading of the aircraft it squatted on its tail. The crew chief propped the tail up and ordered everyone to move forward against the pilots bulkhead. We took off in this configuration and the pilot actually pulled the gear out from under the aicraft. Keywords: |

| SCOTT JACKSON wrote on March 19, 2000 CITY AND STATE: DESTIN FL UNIT: 36TH TACTICAL FIGHTER SQUADRON SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN - KOREA Comments: I am the webmaster for the 36th Tactical Fighter Squadron "Flying Fiends" focusing on the era of 1975 to present (F-4 and F-16). I obtained a certified copy of the squadron's history from the present commander. The site may be viewed at www.info-strategies.com/fiends (select history) and contains information about bases. Yes the 36th was at Pyongyang, as well as Suwon (previous comments). Scott "Stoney" Jackson Keywords: 36th Tactical Fighter Squadron Osan AB Korea |

36FBS ITAZUKE AFB APR.56 - APR 58 |
| LEROY DAVIS wrote on December 11, 1999 CITY AND STATE: SPRINGFIELD OH UNIT: 36 FBS ITAZUKE AFB, JAPAN SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN - KOREA Comments: I would be interested in what happened at Itazuke airforce base from April, 1958 until the base closed. What aircraft came in after the F-100's? What TDY did you have, and for how long? When did the base actually close? The Japanese have 86's flying, in a precision flying team, anyone know where they came from, or were they some of our old 86's that we had prior to the F-100's? Anyone stationed at the airbase during April, 1958 until April, 1959, feel free to e-mail me at anytime. S/Sgt. Leroy Davis Keywords: |

INFO ABOUT THE UNIT AND BASE |
| LEROY DAVIS wrote on January 18, 1999 CITY AND STATE: SPRINGFIELD OH UNIT: 36 FIGHTER BOMBER SQUADRON SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: Comments: I would like to know some of the history of this base upto and including the closing of it. I have seen the banner with "Itazuke AFB" on it at the Airforce Air Museum at Dayton Ohio. They had a note on it that it flew on the control tower, till it was closed. I also would like to know what happened to some of my friends after I left there. I was an aircraft mechanic(43171) while I was there, from Apr.1956 thru Apr. or May of 1958. We had several tdy's to Kadena, Okinawa and to Pusan Korea. Anyone with any info would be welcome to contact me at the above address or e-mail. Keywords: |
