Comments: Mr. Harper, thanks for checking. I have asked if perhaps "Tommy Brown" was a nickname for Mr. DeWick's friend, but he is not sure. If "DeWick" was listed as a crewmember on any aircraft, then "Tommy Brown" or whatever was his real name was on the same crew. DeWick is good at describing how he crawled to Tommy's gunner station and held Tommy as he lay dying, so I'm sure he was KIA.

To further confuse things, come to find out, both tried to enlist in the Navy while underage and were then kicked out. Then, while still underage, they enlisted in the Air Force instead and may have given false names to the recruiter. Mr. DeWick has never used a computer in his life but his daughter promises to get him to this website so he can read the posts here.

It's best he dictates to his daughter exactly what to post here. Thanks again for your help to our veterans and our nation.

Comments: Searching my archives, I do not find Tommy Brown's name as a casuelty in the 345th Bomb Sq. during the Korean conflict.

I do find an incident involving B-29 S/N 44-62042 "Visious Roomer" in which this aircraft experienced an engine fire. five of the crew bailed out before the fire was extinguished and the aircraft returned to Yokota. of the five that bailed out, only one survived. Tommy Brown's name was not on the loading list.

Searching the Korean War data base of casuelties, also I cannot locate Tommy Brown as a KIA.

Comments: I'm posting on behalf of the daughter of Walter Floyd DeWick. Mr. DeWick's is looking for the final resting place of his childhood friend and fellow crewmember who died in his arms during a combat mission over Korea in early 1952. I have checked the registries of national cemeteries with no luck. Here is the info he provided:

345th Bomb Sqdn, name of plane: Vicious Rumors (B-29) based in Japan, Crewmember's name: Tommy Brown, killed by shrapnel from enemy fighter attack during bombing mission over Korea early part of 1952. Hometown for both Brown and DeWick is Los Angeles where they both enlisted, both were gunners on the B-29 at the time of the attack.

If anyone has any idea where Brown might have been interred it would be appreciated. Thank you for any help and thank you for your service.

Regarding your Grand Pa:

Perhaps if you could give us a bit more information, we could help.

What time frame was Paul in the 345th? What was his duty assignment? If he was an air crew member, can you give us his aircraft Name OR Serial number?

We invite you to attend our annual reunion at Savannah, GA. in September. You just might be able to talk with someone who knew Paul.

WE crashed landed at a fighter base in southern Japan on our 9th mission, which destroyed our aircraft and hurt three of our crew members. We were assigned a new Aircraft Commander (Lt. Kinnard)who flew the remainder of our missions with us. Our crew was recommended for the Distinguished Flying Cross because of our accuracy and complete distruction of an enmey target in North Kores. The award was never given to the crew. we were subject to heavy flak [from 88s]and Mig 15 fighters on most every mission.

Comments: Jeremy:

I was in the 345th Bomb Sq. at Yokota from August 1950 to Aug8ust 1952. I was flight line armament NCOIC and DID get to know some of the crews, however not very well. "FIRE BALL", S/N 44-62281 was first assigned to the 345th about 1947-48 and flew with the 98th to Okinawa in 1948 and to Sculthorp, England in 1949. it deployed to Yokota in 1950 and survived 2 years of combat. I do not know how many missions it flew, however it returned to the U.S. in 1952 and was dropped from inventory as surplus in Feb 1957.

I do not find anything in my files on the Holm's crew. Please know that my history of the 98th is FAR from complete. It is evident that FIRE BALL had several different crews. As a matter of fact, I flew with one of its crew about 1949 and have the FIRE BALL logo on my A-2 Leather jacket.

If you go to the A.F. Locator page on my WEB www.pyramidiers.com You will find addresses to write for OFFICIAL documents.

Sorry I could not be more help

Comments: Harold: I was in the 345th at Yokota from Aug. 1950 to Aug. 1952 as NCOIC Flight Line Armament. I do not remember 44-69909, however my data on it indicates it flew out of Okinawa from 1950 to 1952 then it was assigned to the 98th. This tells me that the 200 missions you report were not ALL with the 98th, but included both tours. It could have been the 19 BG or 307th in Okinawa. My records do not specify. The last time I saw 44-86339 (Dinah Might) was at Smokey Hill AFB, KS in 1953. My records show 44-69909 was dropped from inventory as surplus in Feb. 1957

Our association sec/ treas,Ken Laninga was in the 345th at Yokota when the fighting ended. He was on John Murray's crew. He and John will be at our reunion in October at Las Vegas.

We invite you to join us, perhaps some of your crew will be there.

She finalized her career with 208, reportedly the most of any B-29 during the Korean conflict. Althogh she carried the name, Dyna Mite II, for the article with picture, she was renamed "Grandma". I would be interested in contacting anyone who remembered her. I was at Yokata from November 1952 until September 1953 with Ralph Logan as my Crew Chief.

Comments: Re: Clarence Gooden and his crew.

We have many active members in our association who were with the 98th/345th from the beginning in 1942 through 1945.

Much of the history of the 98th was lost when a boat, evacuating the documents after the war, capsized.

Robert Sternfels and Rubin Weltha, the 345th Sq Commander and Exec Officers are still very active.

In 1999 Clarence Gooden's widow was still alive. She had remarried and had a son who was also researching, with much the same results that there are a lot of unanswered questions. Mrs. Gooden( Wood) also tried to make contact with one of the survivors, however he did not respond. My understanding is that he passed on sometime in the late 90s.

We welcome all relatives and seriously interested persons as Associate members. We publish a quarterly news letter, hold an annual reunion and maintain a roster of some 1,400 active members. (Roster included in membership package) For more details, visit our WEB Site at www.pyramidiers.com

Since Sam was the only recorded Mount Ephraim casualty of the KW, his name appears on the monument. I was (as Commander of VFW Post 6262)honored to give a tribute to my personal friend Sam. A web site has been established honoring all Mount Ephraim deceased veterans, and can be seen by typing the following: www.dvrbs.com/MountEphraim,NJ-WarMemorial.htm or dvrbs.com/KW-SamRainey.htm The first entry will give you the entire monument which includes WW2 dead. Scrolling down you will see photos of the dedication ceremony. If you use the other one you will go directly to Sam Rainey portion of the monument. Hope Rudy McIntosh is able to see this somehow, I know he would appreciate it.

KORWALD DELETION: OFFICIAL RESPONSE

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
JAMES B. (BERNIE) Lorenz wrote on 2002-10-08 20:51:44.0

Comments: Received the Official AF Response to my query as to why 62042 was deleted from KORWALD list. Quote: (parenthesis mine) "According to Air Force records, the B-29 in question (44-62042)took off from Yokota Air Base, Japan on March 28, 1952, for a combat mission over North Korea. During the flight to North Korea, the aircraft experienced mechanical problems (engine fire) over the Sea of Japan and the pilot ordered the crew to bail out. After six (actually 5) of the crewmen bailed out, the pilots regained control of the situation and successfully flew the aircraft back to Japan where they landed safely. Regrettably, however, of the six (5) men who bailed out, only two (1) survived. The bodies of two of the men (Zellars & Knott) were recovered, and the two others (Rainey & McManus) were never located. The Air Force declared the incident an operational loss. The mission of our agency (POW/MIA) is to account for Americans missing as a result of hostile action, i.e. combat losses. The database that you reference, the Korean War Air Loss Database, is a listing of combat aircraft losses. The fact that the operational loss in question was temporarily listed on the database was an error." End Quote.

Comments: I've created a tribute page to Myron "Smokey" Sestak and his fellow crew members at: http://myron.sestak.home.att.net Please feel free to stop by the page, and leave a note in the Guest Book. Looking for suggestions/input from any and all. The page has been recently updated to include an Orange County Register (CA) newspaper article about MIA's, featuring Walter Stoll. It's well done, and worth a look.

Searching for Crew and/or Plane Photo

RAYMOND (RAY) Sestak wrote on 2000-06-01 19:01:39.0

Comments: First of all, I would like to thank all of you for helping out in finding information on my cousin, Myron "Smokey" Sestak. Walt Stoll has been especially helpful, and provided me with a crew photo taken during stateside training. I have established a page of tribute to Myron, and would like to expand it to include his fellow crew members who died, or have been missing since 11/19/52.

If possible, I would like to find a crew picture of Major Sawyer's crew, or individual shots of the crew members. Also, if possible, I would like to post a picture of the plane 44-86392 (Wright's Delight?).

I would appreciate any and all help. Take a look at my page at: http://myron.sestak.home.att.net for a crew listing, and other information that I have found, and posted there. Look forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks again!!

Myron served in the Air Force during WWII, went into the reserves after the war, then went active again on November 23, 1951 in Korea. He was assigned to the 345th Bomb Squadron as a bombardier on a B-29, and was shot down on his first mission on November 19, 1952. I would appreciate any information that anyone may be able to offer. I think he bailed out of a burning B29 over the Sea of Japan and subsequently died. He was declared dead 22 Apr 52. I would like to know his A/C # and name (if any), other members of the aircrew (possibly survivors) who can fill me in on what happened. His surviving brother would like to have the details of his death. I was his best friend, having enlisted and gone through basic together we were split up and sent to diferent bases. I am looking for information on my father Captain Robert James Bird,
AO793217. He was shot down over Korean waters on
November 19, 1952 - MIA.

My mother seems to remember that there was a survivor of the mission.
As his only surviving daughter I would like to find out if anyone
knows of him or what occured that evening.

I like many others am trying to patch together the quilt of his life.
His friends called him "Bob" or "Biff" and he was a graduate of
Colgate College.

I appreciate all your efforts and needless to say am overwhelmed at what
 I've read at the site.

I stumbled across your page just now, I'm interested in Your interest in
the Group.

I was on one of the crews in the 345th that took the outfit to Yokota in
1950. Bill Beck mentioned we got there in 8 days. That's right! We got
there in the middle of the morning from Guam, unloaded all the stuff
in the bombays and started loading bombs in the afternoon for a mission
the next morning. The flight crews loaded their own bombs for a couple
of weeks untill the armourer crews got there.

Looking forward to the reunion in Spokane.
