Comments: Hi Jim,
I was there from Dec 54 to Dec 55. Were not the winters great? That is why I luv New Mexico.
If you remember, I had the great experience of running up bird 308 and having the turbine wheel lose some vanes which caused the turbine wheel to get out of balance and sever the shaft at 98%. Caused by some inept pilot that did not write up an over temp.
I'm retired in Las Cruces after a great career in rockets and satellites. I have pictures of you and the crew. I'll send them to you if wish.

Comments: I served with the 339th FIS at Chitose AFB from Nov. 1954 until Nov. 1956, and would like to know how many of my workmates are still around. I was an electronic fuel control specialist on the F-86D, which was powered by a J47-GE-17.

Comments: I was with my Dad, John Tomarchio in Chitose from 1953-1957. He was with the 339th. I have been looking for information on him. He was a pilot. I have 2 of the mugs and several patches and medals that he left. Dad died in 1986. I was age 1-5 while in Chitose, but I remember a lot. The snow, Tokyo zoo, crossing the flight lines without permission, and the many friends that my parents had at Chitose.

Comments: My RO and I had the dubious distinction of having the longest scramble in history at Missawa when in December 1952, the hanger doors were frozen shut and it took ua 45 minutes to get airborne. I think my RO was Gene Kershner. If so he can verify this sordid tale.

Comments: fond memories of chitose. I was NCOIC Operations underCap Bugai and Begeman. No family quarters avail. Went back to Tampa and brought wife, son (3) and 1 year old twin sons. flew in C-47 from Yokota, landed midight - freezing on flightline. Moved into Splinter village then into Crawford (Sapporo}. Part of squaredance club. Really cold for Fla boy, but remember Chitose as best assignment. Moved to 41st AD, Johnson when JASDF took over base.

ANY CREWMEMBERS REMEMBER A SCRAMBLE OUT OF MISAWA? |
 |
 |
John Dickason wrote on 2005-04-09 10:51:47.0
Comments: I often wonder if any of the other three 339th crewmembers involved remember a specific two-ship scramble during a snowstorm in the winter of 1952. We were TDY out of Johnson AB to Misawa. Intruder aircraft from the Kuriles to the north had showed up on the radar. We had to wait to see if tugs could drive through the snowdrifts before we could take off. The rest of the flight was uneventful because the uninvited guests turned around and went home, but for the four of us who were not long out of training, it was exciting to be flying with guns charged, no lights, and real "bad guys" out there somewhere. Because of the weather at Misawa (zero-zero) we recovered at Chitose. I remember the GCA crew at Chitose was angry because we had alerted them and then cancelled when we realized we could see the field. I remember the other pilot - a young redheaded lieutenant named Rush. I often wonder what kind of people were flying in the Migs, or whatever caused the blips on the radar screen. That must have been a lousy remote assignment - the Kurile Islands.

Comments: I was assigned to the 339th FIS from 1954-July 1956. When I arrived they still had the "Cobra" F-86F's and a few months later we transistioned into the new "D" birds while our sister units the 334th FIS and the 335 FIS kept the F-86F's. I was assigned to the Ground Power shop. Course after we got the new birds we were called the "Silver Dragons". Have to admit we had one hell of a good group of troops in that outfit, plenty of good times as well as some bad ones, brings back many memories of almost 50 years ago -where does time go anyway? My only regret is that I left July of 1956 on emergency leave because of my Mothers passing and "none" of my personal belongings were ever sent back to me although the adjadant had promised they would be -hmmmmmmmmmmmm.
