| FRANK HAYES wrote on November 18, 2008 CITY AND STATE: PORT WASHINGTON NY UNIT: 91ST STRAT RECON WING SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN Comments: I participated in Fox Peter One. One summer afternoon in 1952, the F-84Gs of the 31st SFW landed at Lockbourne AFB, OH. About midnight we were out on the ramp preflighting the radars on all of our KB-29P tankers and the old World War Two Crew Chiefs were busy running up the 3350 engines on all of our twenty KB-29s. It was exciting, the first time us new troops had participated in something that we knew was important. About 0200 the KB-29s cranked up and one-by-one took off, taking every foot of that 10,000 ft runway, enroute to Sacramento. At about 0700 the F-84Gs took off and caught up with the KB-29s for air refueling. The 91st had the first Jet Bombers in SAC, 33 four-engine RB-45C photo recon bombers, first bomber to cross the Pacific non-stop and first jet bomber to fly combat, in Korea. 1953 we traded our KB-29s and RB-45Cs in for KC-97s and RB-47Es and later the RB-47E. I later worked as a techrep with the 506th SFW (first F-84Fs) and the 4080th SRW at Del Rio, TX with the RB-57D Black Knights and the U-2 Dragon Lady. I thank you for your service to the United States of America. Very Respectfully, Frank Hayes Keywords: 91st Strategic Reconnaissance Wing Armament and Electronics Squadron, Radar Bomb Nav and K-Systems January 1952 to January 1955 KB-29P, KC-97, RB-45C, RB-47B and RB-47E Photo Recon |
