MY FATHER LARRY GROPPER SERVED IN THE 30TH WEATHER SQDN |
| ROBERT S. GROPPER wrote on December 23, 2011 CITY AND STATE: POUGHKEEPSIE NY UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My father, Lawrence H. Gropper (Larry) served in the 30th Weather Squadron, Osan Korea and Japan in the early 1950's as a weather observer. Although, he passed away in 1985, I still remember him telling me stories about how he sometimes had more say than the generals because he could tell them not to fly due to bad weather. I always loved to brag about that fact. He was a professional photographer from Brooklyn, NYC. Does anyone remember him? Keywords: Lawrence (Larry) Gropper, 30th Weather Sqdn, Weather Observer |

(CLYDE) KOEHNE wrote on June 29, 2010 CITY AND STATE: WACO TX UNIT: HQS 30TH WEATHER SQUADRON SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN Comments: Checked the website today for first time in a couple years and saw entry by Hugh Kirtland who was a Lt. in Hqs 30th Weather in l95l and 52. Sent an email to him thru this site today. Hope he receives. Ran across Harold Cason some years back and we had a meeting. He is only one I have ever discovered who was in the Hqs while I was there from June 5l to late April 52. 60th Anniversary of beginnings of war just passed. Gads, where have all of those years gone. The years have been good to me. I am happy with where I have been and content with who I am. Best wishes to you all. Clyde Koehne, former T/Sgt USAF Keywords: |

WEATHER DET. POHANG KOREA K-3 1950 |
| WILLIAM MCKINNEY wrote on March 24, 2008 CITY AND STATE: REDDING CA UNIT: WEATHER DET 30TH WEATHER SQDN. SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN Comments: Our AWS Weather detachment from Japan was sent to Pohang K-3 early in July 1950. Pohang was about 60 south of Pusan on the East Coast. It was in what was called the Pusan Prmimeter. It was an old japanese Fighter base in WW2. Our Commander Officer was Al Watson Forecaster and B-26 pilot. Our planes were p-51 Mustangs and B-26 bombers that were probably the first Korea based squadrons to fly support for our troops. Our operations were short lived because the North Koreans forced us out in Sept 1950. The Marines came in and took over operations later.I kept in touch with observers Ed Vermillion and Gene Priddy. Also later with Al Watson. Now these many years later its sad to say that I am the only one living of our 6 man Weather Det. I am a retired Educator, and Commander of the KWVA Nor. Cal Chapter No 1 I have many good memories of my good buddies that I served with in the sometimes called the forgotten war. | JOHN WONDERLEY wrote on April 23, 2003 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN - KOREA Comments: Spent a year at Detach Sta 830 starting in October of 1953. We lived with the Army 59th Signal Corp which was in a valley beyond Korean II ROK Corp. We rotated between Sta 830 (located at 59th Signal), an Army Laison Spoter Airstrip and an Army Artilery Groupe. I was a Weather Observer and would rotate a week at a time at each of the above. Some of the weather personnel there were Lt Loy, Charles Moshier, Dennis Wells, Dale Hampton, Don Shelton, Jack Printess, James Gilbert, Sam Pettiford and George ?? from WVA. Spent most of off duty time playing cards, basketball and at the NCO club at nithts. Food was OK prepared by Army Sgt Charles Buller. Living accomadations were sparce. The winter nights was rather cold especially when the oil stove went out. It is hard to believe we still have 27,000 troops in Korea after 50 years. | DOUG HOPKINS wrote on March 19, 2003 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: 30TH WEATHER SQ. @ JOINT OPS CTR K55 SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN - KOREA Comments: I plotted weather maps in Weather Central @ Joint Operations Center (JOC) entire year at K55. Mostly, wee hours of night while listening to great recorded music of Sarah Vaughn, Frank Sinatra and the other greats then...thanks to Amn Don Sieber who brought his LPs and phonograph with him from home. Houseboy was Lee Jai Oon (rhymes with tune). Major Rabe was C.O. Officers had house GIRLS who they often paid in credits with Sears Roebuck or Monty Ward catalogue purchases. Weekly beer parties with iced beer in 55 gal. drums...one at each end of the little tin barracks we lived in (12-13 airmen each). Very cold winter '54/'55. The food was good, no shooting, great friends, great memories but, lonesome times 8,000 miles from home. Unchained Melody biggest hit then. Oh, and the acronyms: OMGIF, the FIGMO Board and KMAGYOYO. When you arrived in Korea, it was "Oh My God, I'm F___"; when you were a short-timer, it was "F___I've Got My Orders" and when you waved at your replacement as your plane left the ground it was "F___It George, You're On Your Own". We moved to Seoul about a month later. Conditions primitive in Taegu, but in Seoul we first lived in what had been an elementary school and then in what had been hospital for Seoul Medical School. Our compound across street from Hqs 5th AF. Food horrible, but living quarters okay. Even had steam heat on occasion. R and Rs (I and I) occasionally. Seven days a week worked, but we were lucky compared to guys on front. When stationed at Itami AB (near Osaka) before Korea used to watch med evac planes - usually RCAF C-54"s unloading wounded. Many with horrible frostbite. Left Korea end of April l952 and arrived in Tokyo on May Day - first day of Japanese independence and many riots in streets, burning of American owned cars, and even throwing some sailors in Moat around Emperor's palace, but no fatalities. Interesting. Next assignment was Great Falls AFB, Montana. Anyway, that was all a long time ago. Mostly pleasant memories, but I sure wouldn't want to do it again. Sayonara. Keywords: |
