Comments: From December 1950 to June 1952 I served with a Royal Hellenic Air Force group of C-47s, which was contributed by Greece to the Korean conflict. We joined the 21st Troop Carrier Squadron in Fukuoka Air Base and then dispatched to North Korea to help evacuate US Marines from Yon Po. After that we and the 21st were relocated to Tachikawa Air Base, and later on to Ashya Air Base in Japan, and we maintained a presense at Kimpo in Korea as well. Since we were totally integrated with the 21st, I was appointed to act as liaison and worked with the 21st's Commanding Officer Loftus. (His first name excapes me). He was a very kind and thoughtful officer, and helped us in many ways adjust to becoming a part of a multi-national unit (there was also a contingent of C-47s from Thailand. Does anyone know what happened to him? I might add that since Korea I immigrated from Greece to the US, am now a US citizen and a retired administrator at Stanford University in California. Comments: Some answers after reading some of the mail The 21st TCS became the 6461st TCS in Dec 52. The squadron moved from K-16 (Seoul) in Dec. 54 to K-14 (kimpo) where it remained until it was disbanded in June 55. Kyushu Gypsies hold an annual reunion yearly and in 2003 it will be held in Charleston, SC. Last year it was held in Dayton Ohio and a plaque was installed in the Memorial Garden at AF Museum in memory and honor of those who served in the Kyushu Gypsies 50-55. Further info can be furnished upon request.

My dad flew with the Kyusu Gypsy unit between 52-53. He was at the time Lt. Arthur DeAngelis.
He's pretty sure the 21st was changed, but is not sure of the number.
He retired Lt. Col. Arthur DeAngelis and is now serving in public office.
My original listing on 2/98 has an old email address. You can reach him through me and I will forward greetings to him so he then can contact you directly.

Comments: I moved from trans. alert in May or June 1956 to the Gypsies. When the Gypsies became part of the 483rd ABGRU I don't know, but we were still known as Det 2 Kuyshu Gypsies. We lived in the transit barracks by the fence. (Take good care of the fence guards) We had 5 birds that were on the go most of the time. Yes I remember Capt. John R. Sparger and Lt Albert F Hall, also Lt. Harry E Smith. I have the orders that asigned us to the 817th and Lt Curtis W Compton was the only other officer asigned with us. The most terrible thing about the transfer was moving into 817th barracks. And yes Capt Sparger is or was special as were all of us. We went down to 4 birds after the sixty knot take offs, ask Paul Purdue. Being part of the Gypsies only for 21 month I still feel that I was part of a legend and got to see its ending. I am or was A/1C H.M Bacon Kyushu Gysies APO 75 Ashiya AFB.

Our Gooney Birds were send down to Indo China. Roomer has it, that many of them were burned on the field. (sabotaged) The flight nurses were angeles from heaven, and served with honor. Our wonder boys looked up to them like the girl they left at home. The nursed gave them hope that they would be returning home.
I am proud to have served with the Gypsies.

Comments: Our Chapter of the Korean War Veterans is involved in a project to assist the American Battle Monuments Commission in obtaining information on all casualties of the Korean War (MIAs/KIAs, Non-Battle Casualties) so that their names and photos (if available) are on the database at the Kiosk in DC. We came across an article in the Amsterdam, NY Recorder of 5 May 1952 on LT Frank Foster Sherman of 21st Troop Carrier Squadron (Gypsies) which indicated that in the course of evacuating wounded on 29 Apr 1952 the plane crashed into the sea. The ABMC has LT. Sherman listed as involved in a "Non-Hostile Air Crash". The paper listed Lt. Sherman as MIA. Anyone out there know about the crash? Kenpage@aol.com

Comments: My dad flew Med-Evac in a unit nick-named the Kyushu Gypsies. He flew C-47's. He also flew B-24 in WW2. Does anyone know the Gypsies or my dad - Alpha John Shorter - ? He died relatively young, before I was adult enough to ask many questions.

He served with this outfit 1952-1953.
We are trying to find information, web links and men interested in
