Comments: WAS STATIONED AT KOMAKI, BUT WORKED AT KOSOJI. LATER MOVED TO OZONE COMPOUND, AND LATER TO GIFU AIR BASE. IN 1954 WAS WALKING DOWN THE STREET OF NAGOYA PASSING THE YAMATO BUILDING. I WAS IN CIVILLIAN CLOTHES AND FAILED TO SALUTE GENERAL RAMEY, HONCHO OF 5TH AIR FORCE, AS HE WAS COMING DOWN THE STEPS OF THE YAMATO BUILDING, 90 DEGREES TO MY RIGHT. HE CALLED ME BACK AS I PASSED, CHEWED MY BUTT, TOOK OUT A PAD AND PEN AND WROTE DOWN MY NAME, RANK, AND ORGANIZATION. IT HAD ME WORRIED FOR DAYS, BUT NOTHING CAME OF IT. LOVED THE NAGOYA AREA.

Comments: Anyone out there who was at the Moriyama Compound from 1952 through 1956, we are looking for you to be a Moriyama Rat. Anyone remember the Beer and Meat Tea Room? There are still some of us who do, and we meet every odd-numbered year (as we are a bunch of odd numbers!). We have met in Biloxi, MS, St. Louis, MO, Rantoul, IL, Louisville, KY, Dayton, OH, Knoxville, TN and next year (2009) in October we will meet in Springfield, IL.
Hope some of you can make the reunion, but even if you can't, we'd be glad to hear from you. Give us some QRL.

Comments: Became NCOIC of the CW section in the Yamato bld in 1948. We lived in the Sumitoma bldg a couple of blocks away. Helped operate an amateur radio station on top of the field grade officers quarters on the same street. I also signed on as a radio operator aboard the FP47. It was a 108 foot passager and freight boat that was used in WWII and taken over the 5th AF as a recreational boat. I loved to sail in Toba bay. A friend had a small sail boat there and that is where I spent most of my off duty Summer hours.

Comments: Just stumbled on to this site. Took my basic training at Sampson AFB,Geneva,New York from January 1954 to March. Then sent to F.E. Warren AFB,Cheyenne,Wyoming for Teletype School. Sent to Nagoya,Japan via Troop ship.I served in the tape relay center in the Yamato building from April 1954 to July 1956. I loved working the mid shift so I could go up on the roof of the Yamato building and watch the sun come up and hear the noodle cart man calling out his presence. Loved Nagoya and Japan, especially the women. Unfortunately I dont't remember any names of my coworkers, probable because I spent so much time in the EM club.I guess I was a pretty wild guy.

Comments: My grandfather was stationed in Tokyo and then Nagoya with the 5th Air Force 1127th Military Police Command from January 1946 - January 1947. He passed away in 1984 and I am trying to put together a heritage album with the photos I have. I would love to hear from anyone who may have any knowledge of the 1127th MPs or any miscellaneous facts about the 5th Air Force during this time frame. I have no other information.
Thank you, Michelle

Comments: My grandfather, Richard "Cookie" Wagoner was a member of the 1st Communication Squadron of the 5th Air Force and served in Nagoya from at least 1946 to 1947. I believe he worked in the motor pool as I have a number of pictures there as well as his driver's permits. I would love to hear from anyone who may have known or worked with him as I believe you may be in some of his photographs or could identify locations in them. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2001 and never got around to labeling his pictures. I would appreciate any help anyone could give me.

Comments: I also worked the torn tape relay in Nagoya. I lived at the old Japanese Radio School- Across from the Hospital, then moved to the Nagoya Air Station, later to Fuchu A.S. outside of Tokyo. The old relay station was a fun place to work but was a royal pain when the teletype machines started breaking an everything started pilling up. I remember a Frank Weiss and a Philip Crumpler and good friend Bobby Smith.

Comments: I first lived in Nagoya and then Gifu Air Base and was the OIC of the Nagoya Relay Center in the Yamato Buiding. I ended up being the Last Commander of the Yamato Building when it closed in 1957. I then was Assistant to the Base Commander at Gifu, Colonel George Shackley, with whom I flew many of the same Combat Missions in the 381st Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, in 1944 over Europe. He was the Commander of the 533rd Sq and I was a Pilot & Flight Commander in the 532nd Sq.
In recent years we have seen each other at our 381st Bomb Group Reunions. I'm sorry to say Colonel Shackley died a few months ago.
I have seen some of the gang from the 1st Comm at the Nagoya/Komaki Reunions.
I shall never forget my asignment in Japan in the Nagoya Area.

Comments: I was the NCOIC of the CW group in the Yamato building before I replace M/Sgt. Hubbard as Comm Chief.
I then replaced M/Sgt. Ken Logan in October 1950 as the Sound Tech for the "Voice of the U.N" a C-47 that was equipped with powerful audio amplifiers. We originally flew missions to talk encircled North Korean soldiers into surrendering. We later changed our mission to fly over enemy troops along the Yalu at 11,000 feet broadcasting battle sounds to take the edge off of their death charges
