Comments: In my last post, I mentioned the wrong club name. I am researching Kadena during 1950-1953. I am interested in information on Ramp Haven Service Club and other service clubs in Okinawa during the Korean War.
I am also interested in Anderson AFB in Guam along with Boondock Haven and other service clubs in Guam.
Thank you for any information you can provide me.

Comments: I'm a reporter with the Richmond Times Dispatch doing a profile on Col. Douglas H. Hatfield who flew out of Kadena Airbase in 1951. He was shot down with his crew in April of 1951 over Korea. His remains were identified by the DOD last month. Did anybody know him or does anybody know how I could reach the two survivors Sgts. George Millward and John Gant.?
thanks

Comments: I was stationed at Kadana Air Base, Okinawa, Japan from Feb 1947 until around Dec 1948 and I was the payroll clerk for the 19th Bomb Sqdn, 22 Bomb Gp during most of that time. The 22d Bomb Gp was reassigned to Salina, KS several months before I was rotated home.
I am trying to locate someone that was in the unit during that time frame. One significant happening during the period was the change from Army Air Corps to USAF. That was some time in August 1947 - I think.

Comments: I am researching a picture sent to me by a friend. The picture is of a B-29 (4-87591). What I have found so far is that it was assigned to the 19th Bomber Squadron.
I was wondering if anyone had any information on this aircraft that I could pass to my friend. On one page I saw the tail number listed but had no disposition for this particular aircraft.
thanks in advance.

Comments: My dad, Ssgt Henry T. Spivey, served in the 19th Food Service Squadron supporting the 19th Bomb Group. He arrived in Okinawa during July 1952. Our family joined him in July 1953, right after the Korean War ended. We left in January 1955 to go to Loring AFB Maine. That year and a half was a very happy time for my family. If anyone remembers my dad, please let me know. He often brought food home late at night when he came home after baking donuts or other items for the mess hall. Wonderful memories of a beautiful island and its people will always be with me.

Comments: I was watching a movie on the base at Wright-Patterson AFB on the evening of June 25, 1950 when someone came up to me and said, "Let's go outside". He told me that there was a war in Korea and I would fly out in the morning.
I had attended the Air Force airborne radar school at Keesler AFB, Mississippi. My specialty was the radar AN/APQ-13 which was the bombing radar for the B-29. Many people like me were rounded up quickly and told to pack up. I was 19 years old.
We flew in a C-47 to what is now Travis AFB in California. At that time it was Fairfield-Suisun AFB. Our flight from Dayton, Ohio made several stops -- one in Oklahoma City where the temperature was 100 and shortly after that in Cheyenne where the temperature was about 40.
From Travis they bussed us to Yerba Buena Island in San Francisco Bay. This was the Army Replacement Depot that had been used during WWII. A few days later we were on a ship -- the Pvt. Joe Martinez, a small ship named for a Medal-of-Honor winner of WWII. My buddy Donald Heppner from radar school was with us.
Eighteen days later we arrived at Naha Harbor on Okinawa. Interestingly enough, we didn't know where we were going until we were at least a week out of SF. Everyone assumed we were headed for Korea -- that's where the war was. We found out that we B-29 radar guys would be divided up -- half going to Yokota, Japan and half to Kadena, Okinawa.
We set up a tent city at Kadena and began building a radar test facility for the APQ-13 in one of the buildings on the flight line. We worked two shifts -- 7 AM to 7 PM and 7 Pm to 7 AM. About once every two weeks we got a day off.
Our job was to keep the radars going in three bomb groups of B-29s. I worked with the 19th moreso than with the others. The 19th had flown in from Guam. The 307th (?) and 377th (?) came in from McChord in Washington.
I spent about 18 months in my tent. I was promoted to Corporal, Sergeant, and Staff Sergeant during that time. As a SSgt I was allowed to move into one of the concrete Ty-Base buildinigs.
We had six or seven hurricanes during that time. When we received the warning, we would collapse our 20-man tent, lash it to the ground, and move into the concrete buildings to wait it out.
We lost quite a few B-29s to Migs -- especially in the early days. Later, as the battle line moved south, the areas for bombing were shrinking. In fact, one of the Kadena B-29 groups was sent home for lack of targets. I was sent home after 22 months on Okinawa.
Some friends from those days: MSgt Jeter, TSgt Patches, SSgt Tomazic, the above-mentioned Donald Heppner, Sgt. Harlan Michaels, Kent Kingery, Cpl. Spaulding (the first black guy I ever really knew), Bill Faddis, another black guy, 1st Lt. (later Capt.) William McGee, and dozens of others that my failing 73-year- old memory can't recall.
