Comments: I'm looking for more information on what has been described as a B-29 "Super fortress" bomber (probably an RB-29) that caught fire and crashed while flying over Raoping County, Guangdong, on 05 NOV 1950. Fifteen crewmembers, including a woman, were found dead at the site and were initially identified U.S. military personnel.
This was on the same day that the Far East Air Forces dispatched 21 B-29s of the 19th Bomb Group to begin incendiary bomb attacks on North Korean cities and towns. They dropped 170 tons of fire bombs on Kanggye, near the Chinese border, and destroyed 65 percent of the town's center.

Black Tuesday Over Namsi, A True History of the Epic Air Battle of the Korean War |

Comments: Until this book, very little had been published about B-29 combat operations during the Korean War, and most of what was written was either incomplete or riddled with misconceptions. Having flown 28 combat missions as a B-29 copilot and witnessed the aftermath of the Namsi debacle I was anxious to set the record straight. In doing so, I spent seven years researching and writing about a battle that lasted fifteen minutes--yet forever changed the way air warfare would be waged. Black Tuesday Over Namsi, a True History of the Epic Air Battle of the Korean can be ordered from the publisher, Heritage Books by calling 800-876-6103 or online at heritagebooks.com. Reviews of Black Tuesday Over Namsi can be accessed through my web site, B-29s in the Korean War. Readers have so far responded that they were surprised and delighted. I hope you will be too and look forward to hearing from you.

Comments: Looking for anyone who knew A2C Joe Valdez. Honoraby Discharged in 1958. My understanding is that he was an Air Traffic Controller and the plane he took a picture on is next to a shapely woman with 'Shady Lady' painted on it. Would have been dating/engaged to my mom Vicky/Victoria at the time. Born in Colorado, lived in New Mexico before enlisting. Would love to hear from a personal friend or military acquaintance of his with a memory or two (good or bad). Writing a book to leave for my kids who never got a chance to meet him. Deceased 11/83.

Trying to ID Plane/Unit |

Robert Osborne wrote on 2007-09-12 13:52:57.0
Comments: I am trying to ID a particular AC or unit from a B&W photo for a friend whose father served in the AC.
The B-29 is metal on top w/ wavy black on the underside. He says the date is 1948 and the place is Guam. I would think that puts the AC in the 19th Bomb Group.
The fuselage has a round artwork on the side- half in the silver, half in the black- a bomb superimposed over clouds with a thunderbolt over the bomb. Probable colors are simple- Black bomb, white cloud, red bolt, blue background and a white or silver rim to the roundel itself. If anyone can tell me anything about this plane, I would be most grateful. Thank you.

Comments: My grandfather was Carl W. Ayers. He was the Flight Engineer on the Command Decision under the command of Donald Covic during the Korean War and when the plane was so decorated. I am just starting to try and research his group and the crew he served with. He is no longer with us and I don't have him to fill me in on everything so I'm relying on the graciousness of strangers with a common bond to help me out. I am desperate to find pictures or any information to be able to start putting together a scrapbook of sorts on the info I find. If you have any information I would be forever grateful if you could send it my way. Please call me or e-mail me with any info you may have. My ultimate goal is to be able to get enough info to create a website to their honor and produce a DVD with all the information and pictures for family or friends. If you have pictures to share, especially if they may have my granddaddy in them, I'd so appreciate any high res pictures or hard copies (I'll pay for all postage and copies). Thanks in advance for everything you might be able to help me with!

Michael Lutman wrote on 2006-03-31 16:38:18.0
Comments: Good afternoon,
My father served as a flight engineer on a B-29 in the Korean War named "Hot To Go". While browsing the "B29's in Korea" website, I saw 2 different aircraft with the same name but from different bomb groups. I am trying to find out which one my father was on as I plan on having the same mural painted on the side of an airplane I recently purchased, in his honor.
Can you help me try to locate some of his former crewmembers? If this will help, my father once told me a story in which they had just been delivered a B-29 from storage and there job was to return it to flying status prior to deployment to Korea. During this episode one of my father's crew buddies inadvertantly activated the machine guns and shot up the control tower. My fathers' name was Charles Lutman. Any assistance you can give me is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Mike Lutman

I am looking for anyone who knew my grandfather during the war. He passed away right after I was born. I would appreciate any help.
Also, I came across an excellent photo of the entire 19th BG, 28th squadron in case anyone's interested.

Comments: I'm a Korean War air combat researcher, specifically, at the moment, both sides of an encounter 6 Dec 1950; 19th BG B-29's encountered MiG-15's of the 29th Guards Fighter Regiment. 3 B-29's were damaged, 2224 (44-62224, Wanderer), 2025 (44-62025) and 3475 (42-63475?) per USAF records, which were callsigns Beneficial 20, 23 and unk, not necessarily in that order. Second two planes are not on the superb "B-29's in the Korean War" site, and in Robert Mann's excellent "B-29 Superfortress-A Comprehensive Registry..." 2025 is a 19th a/c but fate not given; his record for 3475 indicates maybe that number is a mistake in the records. By chance does anyone know about the 6 December 1950 combat, and the B-29's involved, or anything about the crews and the combat itself? Thanks

Comments: response to message 31136 1/10/03 by Joe Larimore.. Following is the entire "A War Story". Have had it squirreled away in my photo album these many years. So true. Enjoy. WCB
A War Story
And so it came to pass, as the fourth hour before the dawn approacheth into the land of Kadena, a messenger goeth forth to the tents of the Birdmen and he speaketh onto each saying verily, “Arise and don thy garments and go thou to the gathering place, for the Master has decreed that it shall be thus”.
The Birdmen, awakening, mutter into their beards and revile the messenger, saying his mother hath not morals, and that his father knoweth him not. And they arise and seek out their socks and go forth to break bread, and one breaketh his hand on the bread.
Then they are gathered together into the sanctum of sanctums called briefing, and their voices are hushed, for they are in the presence of the Master, and disciples arise and speak to them telling of routes, altitudes and targets, for that is their manner of speaking. And at last the Master ariseth and saith unto them, “Yea verily, thou are indeed fortunate, for thine enimies are sorry put and do naught to oppose thee. Go ye forth therefor and gird thyself for battle and let him who would abort beware, for my wrath is great.”
And the Birdmen whisper one to another, “Yea, this is a day of many tribulat- ions, for the Master returneth to his sack and goest not amongst us.” And they answer, “Yea, verily, it is so.”
Then the Birdmen go to prepare the rituals, and gird their loins for battle and some are beset by trembling and redness of eye, for they have partaken too much of wine, and they go onto their friends and speak unto them, saying, “Yea , many times thou hast been as a brother to me, and I to you. Will thou therefor take my place in battle this day, for I am indeed overtaken by illness.” And their friends answereth, “Thou soundest faint and I can not hear thee, go thou and disturb not my meditations.” And they go.
And they go once more to the birds of iron, and there arises a great clamor as they make ready to go forth, and the great birds are risen into the air, all save one who aborteth for lack of boost, and the Master curseth him saying, “Thou shalt know the full measure of my wrath.”
And the Birdmen proceed unto the land of darkness, even to the doorway of the evil one called Joe.
Then the skies became darkened with mist and the Birdmen strayeth from one another and miss their turning points and are lost. And they find not their targets, and great are their trepidations, and the Birdmen cry unto one another saying, “Slingshot one come unto me for I am set upon by bandits and my prop runneth
away.” And Slingshot one replieth, “Verily, thou shouldest drop dead, for mine wings are heavy with ice and the flak hath found me.”
And some falleth unto the land of darkness, while one and another scurrieth away like mice, and salvoeth their bombs into the sea and returneth home empty-handed.
And the Master gathereth them together and speaketh unto them of the bad show, and of many practice missions, and of frozen promotions, and giveth them hell in general.
So be it----------Amen

As we all were at this period of time [SEP 51 - OCT 53] multi task designated (did many other things than the job description [as in the Black Sheep]). I never did so many different and interesting things in my life. From minor surgery, power generator operations, road building, crash response crew, S-2 debriefing. Gads, I did'nt want to leave the place.
Dr. Alfred E. Leiser [MAJ USAF](then) is still alive. He was our Flight Surgeon from Madison, Wisc., along with Harold I. Daily {CPT) from Houston, TX. Al is living in Houston. For those who want I can provide his email address.
I don't know about this "follow me jeep," "runway fire pot," deal I've read here........, never saw such during my tour of duty. Our dispensary was situated between the 19th BG and 307thBW intersecting taxiways. I pulled many a 32 hour shift, plus crash station standy, and tower visits. Never witnessed this "jeep-fire pot bit."
No, we did not have taxi-way lights, but they were well marked [painted] as were the revetments. At mission start, the ground crews would aid in guidance out to the taxi-way center line when given position instructions via radio.
Keep the speed up, and stay out of the trees.

Suprisingly, we were all in the forward section of the aircraft, Yet the Pilot, Co-Pilot, Navigator and Flight Eng. were lost.
No one in the aft section survived. The right gunner Don Wilson, survived the ditching and pulled me and the radio operator out through the astrodome, but was never found. He saved our lives.

Joe Larimore 19th Bomb Wing, 30th bomb Sqdn. May to Dec. 1951 Kadena AF base, Okinawa
307th bomb wing, squadron forgotten May to Dec. 1953 Kadena
Following are a few tid bits he wrote about Korea but first let me apologize for typing his first name, Charley, with an "ie" in my last post. Sorry Dad.
****** A field rat had taken up residence in one of the B-29's (Blue Tail Fly?) All efforts to dislodge him, including depressurization at high altitude, had failed until finally he had completed more than seventy missions. On one occasion, the rat jumped from the forward end of the tunnel onto the radio operator's table, which prompted Jose Gonzales to take a lusty swing at him with a crash axe. No harm to the rat, but Jose destroyed some of his radio equipment. The rat seemed to subsist on C-ration scraps, but eventually he came out seeking food and was killed. Personally, I thought he deserved better.
************* The funniest war-story I heard was war-story #43 which went like this: "There I was at forty thousand feet, flying upside down and had fallen out of the cockpit, hanging only by my prepuce, when along came this craaaazy Rabbi."
*********** While serving with the 19th Bomb Wing in 1951, one piece of literature, which made the rounds, started off like this: Twas the fourth hour before the dawn approached the land of Kadens, a messenger goeth forth to the tents of the birdmen and awaken them saying, "Verily, I say unto thee, arise and don thy garments, for the master has decreed that it shall be thus." And the birdmen, awakening, revileth the messenger, saying that his mother hath not morals and that his father never knew him. The birdmen then goeth forth to break bread, and one breaketh his hand on the bread. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I've forgotten the rest of that story.

The book will be a companion volume to my title on the B-29 in World War II, which is being published later this year. I need to hear from anyone who can help with personal recollections, documents, and especially the loan of photos.
One purpose of this book will be to recognize every unit involved in B-29 operations in Korea. To achieve this, I need your help. If you have photos to lend, I will treat them with great respect. Please note, however, that I am looking for the loan of real photos: I can't use digital images.

We are attending with my dad as a family and then will return to my house for a Father's Day celebration. I would like to surprise him with any info, pictures or names of crewmates he could contact. He just recently in the last year started telling us (his kids) about his stay in Korea. I am so happy about this because we should know what he did there, who he knew so that we can pass the info onto future generations. Any info you can send me via email would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. http://dokdo1948.freeservers.com
PLEASE: If you have any information about this incident (you heard of it, you had served as a B-29 crewmember in 1948, especially in the 5th AF on Okinawa) or IF YOU WERE INVOLVED in this incident, OR IF YOU MIGHT KNOW OF ANYONE WITH ANY INFORMATION, please contact me! I have already contacted the National Archives, and I have yet to hear from them. Koreans have spoken of this issue, but US Air Force vets' voices have not been heard on this relatively unknown incident. Please take a look at the website above and tell me what you think! I would like AF vets' input/opinions! Please tell your associates!

Comments: You birds ought to remember Chuck. He was the guy in S-2, who, drilled all of the aero intel out of you. Also, he was very unique, right? The only damn airman, who, was a F-4 pilot raiding on the Battle For Okinawa, and was shot down making a run on Shuri by a Jap sub. He spent years in a Navy rehab med unit. And when they medically released him [I always thought differently] they would not grant his return to flight status. So, he shipped over into the Army Air Force, went to G-2 school, and became an intel nerd-debriefer. He liked scotch a lot. Chuck was one fine human being. Well, hell, we all were. Hip, hip, hooray. Hip, hip, hooray. Hip, hip, hooray. These damn unappreciative sillyvillians, well, we wont go into that here, there is not enough espace, and I am tired and wanto go to bed, Oyashuminisi. I am CWO-2 GEORGE EDWARD EDWARD REDER, II., Army of the United States, Retained. Those admin bastards would'nt let me fly either. I had to wait it out until civvi service to go to [paid out of my pocket] professional/commercial flight training. Even though Part 41. Now I am an older COMMAND PILOT, CML/ASMEL/INST/CFI/AGI, and a damned good one. To the latins I am CAPTAIN GEORGE. And to you also, now, I am CAPTAIN GEORGE. Anyway, I was one of the first [who wanted flight school] Physicians Assistants trained out of Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, and assigned as an Aero Medical Assistant to our 19th Bombardment Group Dispensary, situated between two "Y" taxiways, of the 19th and the 307th. I was that baby faced, curly red headed guy, who had the ten foot tall voice. Remember? [I did take care of your clap!] Lets see, I do remember almost all of you, 28th, 30th, 93rd, and Hq. We had Maj Alfred E. Leiser from Madison, WI who played the most magnificant violen. Cpt Harold I. Daily of Houston TX. 1lt Earnst and another lt I don't remember. NCIOC WAS Msgt Russell B. Smith [I'm sworn not to devulge what B. stands for], there was Mac in the pharmacy from Paduca, KY, Airperson Robles from some place in south texas, he was a professional wrestler; A1C Francisco G. Cavacos, Raymondville, TX; Sgt Hunt; Sgt Tabor. Tabor was the guy who gave all of the finger waves, and liked it. Also another story. I was there from September 1951 through October 1953, and I did not want to leave. I have made one recall back there about three years ago, and I did not want to return then either. To all of you comrades, living and departed, good show ole boy....., good show. Sayonara todomodachi-do.

Comments: Guess this would be an adendum to my last insert. And, I wish some of the members could expound a little more than just a few brief words. Mates, comrades, fellow past 19th veteran's, this is your chance to say what your thoughts were and are about duty with the 19th Bombardment Group (Medium), B-29's, from Okinawa-Shima, Ryukus, Kadena Air Base - Pacific, during the Korean War. Get your thoughts together and speak up. Hey guy's, do you remember Typhoon Agnes? What a bitch she was. Do you recall that Larry Davis of Houston, Texas was the senior announcer at RYCOM Armed Forces Radio Station, and all the hours of good stuff he gave us on the radio [and that I did a little part time work there too]. For those who cannot remember the squadrons, they were the 28th, 30th, and 93rd. And of course Headquarters Squadron, which yes, I was in. I guess all of any photographs I have are in storage someplace up north, and, I will [that's an order, from me to me] round them up [unless I expire first] and make them available somehow on the net for all who may want same. And I repeat, put your thoughts forth here friends, you want the world to know.....(?), this is the place to do it......, for from the desk of this web site......, the universe can read it. Hope you all had a friendly 4th of July, and some fun among friends. I did, gave a tour of Corpus Christi Naval Air Station, Texas, to a fellow disabled veteran who had never been there, and we watched the fire works display from the end of IH-37 with good ole CV-16 Lexington in full view. Then there was South Sea Sinner, the guys refused to fly her back to the U.S., and the 20th Air Force Commanding Generel said, "If you don't fly it back, you will all be court martialed" She was all rotted out from fungus and metal stress. Well, they flew it out, to HI, the bird fell apart and the crew ditched, and all their christmas gifts in the fly away crates in the bombay went deep six too. Well guys and gals, have a good fun summer [my personal wish for you all], and "Keep the speed up!" Georgie "Akabu"

GEORGE EDWARD (RED) REDER wrote on 2000-03-01 16:55:19.0
Comments: Yep, pretty much what appears here in web/net/print about 'COMMAND DECISION' is true. Me, I was a "DOC," Air Man Last Class, GEORGE EDWARD REDER, II., From Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I was assigned detached duty from 19th Bomb Wing, Anderson AB Guam, to Hq 19th Bomb Group, Kadena, with duty at the 19th Bomb Group Dispensary, right smack dab in the middile of two taxi ways of the 19th and 307 Bomb wings. I was a Senior Aero Medical Specialist [Physicians Assistant], with Maj. Alfred E. Leiser, USAF, MD of Madison, Wisconson {and Daily, Hunt, Robles, Cavasos, Tabor, Tyler, Smith (never could remember "Mac's" full name, he was an Irishman from Paducka, Kentucky}). Anyway, we ["Doc's"] met every single swinging uh-huh in the Group [if not the whole island]. Even if only for one very important function, after every mission. They all had to come see us and sign for their one ounce of 100 proof OLD GRAND DAD [or whatever else we were supplied with at the time] prior to S-2 [intelligence] de briefing, to loosen them up. (No fun trucking along at 42 k feet for ten hours, even having folks on the ground trying to knock you out of the sky) Army Master Sergeant Butch Greene was the island Provost Sgt with the RYCOM MP'S, and it so happened he had lived in my neighborhood in Pittsburgh. Sure, we had some great fun. Well, that's beside the point. Yes, Command Decision set records, that, we hope in the future, will never have to again be addressed. May the good spirits of the cosmic universe give blessings upon all of my ole comrades, from the most beautiful island in the pacific, OKINAWA-SHIMA.

Fathers Plane? |

Comments: I'm trying to find the plane and it's crew that my father flew with. He says he was on the Command Decision, and that the last flight they took heavy fire to the wing. When they landed and the plane stopped, the wing fell off on the strip. The entire crew was sent home because of the episode. My father was in an auto accident in '62-'63 and the information may or maynot be correct. Please.. If there is anyone who remembers my father, let me know. Gregory Secor (760)728-4553 Thank You.

Dear Mr. Barker:
Thank you for your response of 8/17. I have received a little more
information and I will check on the DD-214.
This serviceman 'Samuel M. Yonan' Joined the U.S. Air Corps in
1948. After being honorable discharged he joined the Air Corps
Reserve in 1949. He was recalled to Active Duty in June 1950
and was sent to GUAM where he was with the "Peacetime
Mission" of the 19TH BOMBARDMENT WING under the command
of Brig Gen. A. H. GILKESON.
Based on the above, do you think of anyplace where I may find
rosters of the personnel in the 19th Bombardment wing?
Thank you again for the help you've provided up to this time.
Sincerely,
Mr. Esha Tamras

My wife's father was Lt. Col. Donald M. Covic, aircraft commander of
the "Command Decision". This aircraft established many records
including most number of missions, most decorated crew and the only
B-29 to have shot down 5 MIGs. It is the only bomber "ace" of the
Korean war to have downed 5 jet aircraft, and possibly all of Air Force
history.
An exhibit of the aircraft and crew is on display at the Air Force
Museum at Wright- Patterson.
We would be interested in establishing contact with any former
squadron members, crew or members of their families who knew
Don.
Our E-mail adress are:

In answer to your inquiry, Don and the "Command Decision" were with
the Okinawa based 19th Bomb Group. The aircraft flew 128 combat
missions, of which, Don commanded 121. This was more more missions
than any other bomber of the war. He was A/C on all the missions on
which this B-29 downed the 5 MIG-15's
In addition, a press release from the National Air Show on August 3,
1953 in Dayton, Ohio advertised this B-29 as the "World's most
decorated bomber".
From all the newspaper articles that Debbie, my wife and Don's daughter
has I'd say that the accomplishments were well recorded and this
recognition is well established.
In the war she logged more than 1,500 combat flying hours while
dropping 2, 500,000 tons of HE.
Don's personal awards included 2 DFC's, Bronze Star, 4 Air Medials,
plus 18 other medals and commendations.
Thanks for your assistance. While there is much, much more to say
about this pilot, aircraft and crew, we'll be glad to share these facts
and events with any interested party.

The subject Aircraft had a very illustrious record and I have visited
it in Dayton a few years ago. One minor correction in the statistics
that I'm sure you would want to know for the sake of accuracy.
The B-29 carried a maximum load of up to 40 -500lb. bombs or 20,000
Lbs, 10 Tons per mission and thus would have probably carried a maximum
tonnage on 128 missions of 1,280 TONS of HE . During the whole Korean
War the B-29,s were credited collectively with having dropped
167,000 Tons of HE Bombs!
What an incredible record Col. Covic had!!!! Although I was just a
Gunner in the 19th I KNOW what is represented in hjust this segment of
his very illustrious career!!

I am trying to get more information on Sgt Billy Beach of the Air

that he was the first Aerial Enlisted Gunner of the B29.
If you have more information on this person please let me know.
