Comments: Began my assignment as a teletype mechanic in September 1947 when the unit was the 139th AACS Sqdn at Itazuke AFB. In December 1947, the designation was changed to the 166th AACS Sqdn and then on 1 October 1948 it was changed to the 1955th AACS Sqdn. In early 1949, I attended a six month radio mechanic school at the 1855th AACS Sqdn in Tokyo. After completing school, I returned to Itazuke until I finally left Japan in August of 1952.

Comments: * My name back in those days was Leroy, having enlisted underage (15) and I used my older brothers name (birth certificate, drivers lic. etc). I changed all that when I was discharged. Quite a story.

Comments: I was initially a radio operator in the 1955 AACS and stationed at Brady AFB Japan. Later became radio mechanic in the same detachment (#5). Arrived in spring of 1953 after an assignment in 1st Com Sqdn in Nagoya. Left in Dec 1954 and reassigned to a Mapping and Charting Sqdn in West Palm Beach Fla. Served there as a radio operater with TDY to Greenland. I would like to hear from any one else who was stationed here.

Unit background
From: Bill Floyd Email address
Sent: Saturday, July 22, 2000 2:36 PM
The 1955-5 AACS unit I was assigned to in 1952 was stationed in
Fukuoka, Japan.
I was an airborne radio operator and we flew to Korea almost every day with
supplies, troops & mail. Never did, as I said, see actual ground
combat, but our detachment was given the Korean Service Medal and the
ROK Pres. Unit Citation. Also got the U.N. Service and Good Conduct
medals...(I'm copying this is off my DD214).
Prior to the 1955-5, I was assigned to the 1951st AACS Squadron in
Itami, Japan where I worked for FEAF Hq. We intercepted Russian and
other info there. Was discharged 20 Sept. 1955 in Japan and reenlisted
to fill my own vacancy.
Hope this info will be of some help.
Thanks
Bill Floyd
