Comments: While antiquing, I found a brass bowl with a lid. The bottom is stamped with the word KOREA and two Korean symbols, the top lid has 4 Korean symbols, a flower, and the Korean flag. Around the top of the lid reads "SO JONG RI KOREA - 18TH FIGHTER BOMBER WING ORPHAN-AGE"
I was wondering if anyone else had one like it, or if maybe these words were made into the lid during or after the war. Any feedback would be great. You can email me at bluravenstudio@yahoo.com. Thank you!

Comments: Arrived at K-10 in January 1952 and rotated to the states in December 1952. I had the Supply Unit for Aircraft (theF-51 Mustang), clothing, signal, mainte- nance and others. I can remember trading booze for clothing (especially sweaters and wool jackets) for our guys to keep warm. I guess this was called "Scrounge Supply".. Whatever, it took!!!

I am looking to coorespond with anyone who witnessed a quartet of F-86F's based at K-55, Osan from mid 1953 or so thru 1954. Comments: I am currently working on the autobiography of John Howe who flew with No 2 Squadron SAAF as part of the 18th FBW. He was in Korea June to October 1951.
I am seeking anybody who may have encouneterd John and am also interested in the American perspective on working alongside the South Africans. I appreciate there was a very healthy respect for them - and they for the Americans - but if anyone can add any personal thoughts to that I would be interested to hear from them.
You may be interested to know that John left the SAAF in 1954 to join the Royal Air Force with whom he completed his career as an Air Vice Marshal. He currently lives in Norwich, England.
I am also seeking Ed Rackham who was on the 18th FBW and who John met up with later at RAF Woodbridge in England when he commanded 74 Squadron RAF flying the Lightning. Between them John and Ed instigated the first Tiger Meet which of course has grown into an annual NATO affair and the organisation still thrives today.
I look forward to hearing from anyone who may be able to help.

Comments: Seeking information--if anyone remembers 1st. Lt. Bert White, who completed his 100th combat mission on Aug. 29, 1951. He and other Nat'l Guard pilots from Great Falls, Mt., were sent to Pusan in July or Aug. 1950. Bert also served several months with ground troops of the US Army and ROK; he was a forward observer, calling in artillery and air strikes against Communist forces. He did not speak of the war until 1983, then shared with me that he had served with a "whole bunch of heroes"--every man he served with in Korea. Bert passed away in Nov. 1991, and only shortly before his death revealed that he had earned many decorations, among them the DFC for action near Sinanju on Aug. 22, 1951. We have some small Kodak shots of damaged P-51s and some gun camera film of about half his missions. I served as a USAFSS airborne intercept operator in South Korea in 1963. I'm writing a family history. Any info is appreciated. Thanks to the "whole bunch of heroes" who served during the Korean War--and to the thousands of "peace keepers" who have served since.

One of its Appendices will be a listing of 18th Wing Veterans of the Korean War era. The list now exceeds 3,000, but will probably increase significantly prior to publication. Veterans of the 18th or their families are welcome to submit names of veterans for inclusion on the list. An email or a written communication will suffice. Comments: Looking for anyone who may have known my Father. He was in Korea on the third day of the out break. He didn't talk a whole lot about it but I remember he said he was in armour maintenance and worked on P-51 Mustangs. His pilot was Chappie James,which he had a very deep respect for. He had a picture of himself and Chappie,plus some of his other friends but since his death and my mothers I can't find any of the photos.If anyone remembers him I would appreciate any feed back or photos.

Comments: Hi, my name is David Kowalchek, my dad is Walter E. Kowalchek, he served in Korea 52-54 active in the 18th fghtr Bmbr group. He now resides in Auburn Mass,originaly from Worcester Mass. Iam writing this for several reasons.1ST does anyone have any info in dealing with the V.A.as to benefits and eligability? 2nd any reunions in this area? 3rd I think he would apreciate to hear from any of his fellow A.F.buddies. He is a very proud vet and has extensive photo journals and many stories from the time he served in Korea. In closeing I can only say we as a people need to stand up and demand our vets get the treatment they deserve, Our government that we belive in needs to take a closer look at the vets and their families that have suffered the aftermath of war related trauma. Just thank a vet everday no matter what part he or she played, without there service we as a nation would not be free. thanks d.j.k.

Comments: Arrived at K-10 in Jan. Freezing Cold. First night was spent in tent (the oil stove blew up during the night, soot covered everyone). Assigned to the 18th AIO as payroll and personnel specialist. Lived in quonset near the hospital and gymnasium. Left about mid Dec. and spent next three years at Eglin AFB, FL. Would like to hear from anyone from the 18th AIO.

All,
It is with great sorrow that I inform you of the passing of my father
this morning at his home in Bellevue. He died of natural causes.
Would each of you please by any means that you may have, contact all of
my father's dear friends in the 18th FWA and inform them of this.
His first love was my mom, his second was flying. He had a wonderful
and heroic career in the Air Force and was loved and respected by those
who knew him. As a father he was a loving and gentle man. He will be
missed by all who knew him.
Dad has lived and breathed the 18th FWA for many years and was extremely
happy that there was interest in this great organization from others. I
am happy to know that the work and dedication that he has put into this
group has paid such great dividends to so many.
Bud Biteman has finished his final approach and has landed successfully
at the pearly gates. He now can say he has successfully completed the
most important mission known to man...life.

Combined unit Reunion outcome
We're trying to work up a joint reunion in Capetown for Sept (7-13)
'97 of their SAKWVA and our 18th Fighter Wing
Oct 97 follow up:
Our Sept '97 Reunion with the South African Air Force was beyond our
wildest hopes ... the 29 of us were treated more like visiting royalty
than a bunch of Aging, Ancient Aviators... and we revelled in it!
We knew that the South Africans were a hospitable bunch, but had no
idea that they would take us to their bosoms so quickly... we met as
comparative strangers when we climbed off the airplane, but a week
later we were all life-long friends! (and can hardly wait to
go back.....)
I could go into considerable detail ... for your PERSONAL edification,
but it would be much too lengthy for inclusion on your website... all
about SAAF Generals, Lions, Elephants, Zebras and Giraffes... what an
amazing country, and what amazing, friendly people.

Target info needed

I am trying to identify targets that my dad hit during the Korean
Conflict, Capt. Elmer N. Dunlap. He flew F-51's and F-86's in the
18th Fighter Bomber Wing of the 5th Air Force and saw action in Korea
between December 1925 to May of 1952.
I would appreciate information to help locate in a general sense the
following targets: K-8, K-55, Line Easy, Chodo, Chong Chong,
Double Bend, Holy Land, Sariwon, Boot Bend, Hak Pang, Talchon-ni,
Door Knob, Kiss, Tang Yang, Hafjuy, Anak, Papasan, Ping pong and
Chulmal.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to compose a short

My father was Ssgt. Gerald "Jerry" Denson and passed away in 1976.
You might like to know that pictures of that sign and my father
painting it were published in 1952 in the New York Daily News and
New York Daily Mirror.
Just a bit about me, I am a Navy Veteran of the Vietnam Era ffrom
1972-78 and work on legislative issues concerning vets and their
dependents.
