Comments: I am currently working on the autobiography of John Howe who flew with No 2 Squadron SAAF as part of the 18th FBW. He was in Korea June to October 1951.

I am seeking anybody who may have encouneterd John and am also interested in the American perspective on working alongside the South Africans. I appreciate there was a very healthy respect for them - and they for the Americans - but if anyone can add any personal thoughts to that I would be interested to hear from them.

You may be interested to know that John left the SAAF in 1954 to join the Royal Air Force with whom he completed his career as an Air Vice Marshal. He currently lives in Norwich, England.

I am also seeking Ed Rackham who was on the 18th FBW and who John met up with later at RAF Woodbridge in England when he commanded 74 Squadron RAF flying the Lightning. Between them John and Ed instigated the first Tiger Meet which of course has grown into an annual NATO affair and the organisation still thrives today.

I look forward to hearing from anyone who may be able to help.

Comments: Seeking information--if anyone remembers 1st. Lt. Bert White, who completed his 100th combat mission on Aug. 29, 1951. He and other Nat'l Guard pilots from Great Falls, Mt., were sent to Pusan in July or Aug. 1950. Bert also served several months with ground troops of the US Army and ROK; he was a forward observer, calling in artillery and air strikes against Communist forces. He did not speak of the war until 1983, then shared with me that he had served with a "whole bunch of heroes"--every man he served with in Korea. Bert passed away in Nov. 1991, and only shortly before his death revealed that he had earned many decorations, among them the DFC for action near Sinanju on Aug. 22, 1951. We have some small Kodak shots of damaged P-51s and some gun camera film of about half his missions. I served as a USAFSS airborne intercept operator in South Korea in 1963. I'm writing a family history. Any info is appreciated. Thanks to the "whole bunch of heroes" who served during the Korean War--and to the thousands of "peace keepers" who have served since.

Comments: I served at K-46, Wonju in AIO. Would liketo hear from someone who has photo's of base, planes, runway and etc.
I was a heavy equipment operator. We had our equipment at Motor Pool by Flight line.

Would like any information on Ross Torson from Coffeyville, Kansas, "Butler" SAAF from Cape Town South Africa, Lt. Keyser who was in AIO at K-46. Does anyone remember the house boy named Mousey from K-46. I was wondering what ever happened to him?

Comments: I arrived at K-10 from Japan in May 1952. I served with the 18th Fighter Bomber Wing. After about 2 weeks I was flown to K-46 near Wonju, this was the advanced base. We served with the South African Air Force there. We used F-51 Mustangs and so did they. They flew bombing missions every day. We lost some planes and several got shot up. I worked in AIO - as a heavy equipment operator. I plowed snow, worked on roads and runways. The winter was very cold and we didn't have warm boots or clothes. The guard duty at night around the planes was bitter cold. The guys on the flight line had a rough job in the cold too. We slept in tents about five or six men to a tent. In 1953 part of our unit and all the planes went to K-55 - Osan and the F-86 Sabre jet was the one to replace the F-51. I have alot of memories of those times, we did a good job and I'm proud to have served in the Korean War. The 18th Fighter Bomber Unit was a proud unit. From Korea I returned to the states and served at Tooele Ordanance Depot, Utah. I have alot of stories and etc. in case anyone would like to contact me. Comments: I am looking for information about a crash of two F-86s from the 18th FBW in Japan on Jan. 8 or 9, 1955. It could of been a midair collision. There were other crashes near Japan around the same time. One of the crashes was an F-86D in the East China Sea.

Some of my buddies there, included Billy Horne, from Austin, TX, Arthur Castro, from Corcoran, CA,
Elton Hill, from Mansfield, LA, and Kenneth Davis, from somewhere in Ohio.

The two flight surgeons with whom we served were
Dr. Bill Singer, and Dr. William Anschutz.
