Comments: For all you guys seeking information on the operations at K-9 in 50-53. Osprey Press has a new pictorial book on the 452nd and 17th at K-8 and K-9. The title is B-26 Night Intruders Over Korea". It is available from the Air Force Museum at Dayton, Ohio. Try their web site. Cost is about $17.00. I just reviewed the 13th Bomb Squadron site at www.13thbombsquadron.org. It is excellent. Can we do the same thing for the 452nd and 17th? Does anyone remember LT. Col. Walt Lasly? He was in the 452nd as a driver, 51-52. He wrote a novel about the 452nd at K-9. Anyone want a copy? Can anyone send me some scanned photos of K-9? I have plent I can send to you.

Comments: Shipped out on the USS Meigs in Dec. 1951 and returned on the USS Walker in Dec 1952. Was assigned to the Base Supply Sqd. under LC Reid Anderson where I maintained stock records for the Douglas B-26's. Also, handled the AOCP and ANFE requirements. Knew many of the Maintance personnel. Was there when we lost our warehouses by fire. We moved to another K-site while they rebuilt our runway. I can't remember the K number but it had been a Jap base during WW2. We had a tent city at that location . We lost Col. Nye during this period along with another commander so I seem to remember. Would like to hear from some of the people who was there that I knew.

Comments: Anyone interested in a copy of the Knight Life, Journal of the Black Knights Vol 1, No. 10 dated 25 Dec 52. This issue has quite a few pictures and articles about events at the air base. There are a lot of names of men and women who served there mentioned in various articles. I was stationed at the Coast Guard LORAN Station, ELMO4 up on the hill and we were supported by the folks at the air base. They brought us our mail, and provided us rations, payroll & etc. Get in touch with me at my email address and I'll send you a copy.

Jack Vanwey wrote on 2000-10-27 09:47:34.0
Comments: On July 7 of this year, I was watching a CBS news report on the noon news. The reporter was interviewing a Mike Dowe and they were talking about the end of the Korean War. Mr. Dowe was saying that he was one of the last of the POWS released from a North Korean prison camp. He went on to say that 20 prisoners were left behind and never heard from again, as far as he knew. I thought that I also heard Mr. Dowe say that they may have been sent to Siberia. At the end of the report they showed the names of the twenty men and William Vanwey was the name at the end of the list. They said to turn into the news later in the day to hear more about the story. However, I did not see a followup story later that day. I requested a transcript of the show from CBS. However, the transcript did not have the word Siberia mentioned and it did not have the list of names-which had been shown visually, but not read aloud. The transcript was just of what had been said, although, I still think they mentioned Siberia. I have recently found out how to reach Mike Dowe and I sent him an e-mail asking if he had any information. I want to know where the list of names came from-who might have that list-and if it is posssible that prisoners might have been sent to Russia(Siberia). If Willie were one of the twenty men, then it would mean that he had been captured and was a POW. I found a little information on the internet which I will forward to you. In one place, it says that Willie was lost on October 7,1952, and in two places it give the actual date of presumed dead as 12-31-53. I think that this last date was used for many who were presumed dead at the end of the war. There is also information that Willie had been tagged for DNA comparison. I am sure that Willie did not survive the war, but I would like to know as a friend if he had been held as a POW for a long length of time and whether or not he was held after the war. I found some evidence through the internet that pilots were captured and sent to Russia where they were asked to talk about our planes and flying techniques. The government won't say much about the possibility of American airmen having been captured and sent to Russia.
