Comments: I am looking for any information on First Lieutenant Richard Borschel who was the pilot of an F-80C Shooting Star fighter interceptor with the 16th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 51st Fighter-Interceptor Group. On October 12, 1951, while on a combat mission, his aircraft's engine suffered a flame out ten miles south of Chaeryong, Korea and it was said that he was able to bail out successfully, but was killed later. His remains were never recovered.
My mother is his sister who is the last living sibling of the family and would love to hear from someone who knew him.

Comments: I'm researching Korean War air combat. According to an 'encounters with enemy aircraft' report, a 16th FIS pilot named Desonia claimed damage to a MiG-15 10 December 1950. According to Soviet records a MiG was in fact hit in a combat at the same time, though was able to return to base with engine damage. Does anyone know the full name and rank (at the time) of this pilot?, or anything else about this encounter. The other pilots in the flight, Topcoat How, were named Curran and Hall. Thanks.

Comments: Hello,

I knew a Ronald Anthony Smith I think we called him Smitty, he's was an irrespressable extremely high energy spirit African American Soldier in The U.S. Army, and I believe it's his dad featured as the black hero and friend of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who has a new book out called "Brothers In Arms" about a black tank command during WW2 and I believe the Smitty featured in this book is either the dad or granddad of Ronald Anthony Smith "Smitty" of who I was in basic training with at Fort Sill, OK in late 1978.

I saw Kareem on TV yesterday promoting his book and they showed a photo of WW2 Soldier "Smitty" and he looks exactly like the smitty I was in the Army with.

Is this you? If not what advice can you give me to help me contact some of the above mentioned people.

Sincerely and Respectfully Yours,

Comments: I am researching air combat in the Korean War by non-F-86 units. I am looking for information, first hand and otherwise on F-80 units’ air combat with MiG’s, especially in the period November 1950 thru mid 1951. A few of these encounters are well known and written about in published US works but most are not, sometimes they are only barely mentioned at all in available US records. But some had surprising results from the Soviet perspective that I believe would make them very interesting if described in detail from both sides, so this is what I am trying to do. Any info relevant to this is most welcome.

Comments: I am an historian working on the Soviet Air Force's involvement in the Korean War.
My neighbor mentioned that he had a cousin shot down in Korea. I looked him up on
the POW/MIA data base and found out that he was a member of the 16th FIS and was
shot down on October 12, 1951. The family here in Tallahassee was quite close to Lt.
Borschel when he was undergoing flight training here in FL. If anyone knew Lt.
Borschel and/or the circumstances of his loss (declared KIA in Sept. 1952), please let
me know. I assume that he was probably hit while flying a railroad interdiction raid as
the "official" USAF history says that you guys were quite busy with this type of
mission throughout Oct.-Nov. before you transitioned to F-86Es. If anyone has any
interest in the Soviet pilots who flew in "MiG Alley", I'd be happy to share my
research. Thank you for your help, service and Happy 50th An
