On October 12, 1951, while on a combat mission, his aircraft's engine suffered a flame out ten miles south of Chaeryong, Korea and it was said that he was able to bail out successfully, but was killed later. 16TH PILOT, LAST NAME DESONIA |
| JOE BRENNAN wrote on July 10, 2005 CITY AND STATE: HOBOKEN NJ UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: INTERESTED PERSON Comments: I'm researching Korean War air combat. According to an 'encounters with enemy aircraft' report, a 16th FIS pilot named Desonia claimed damage to a MiG-15 10 December 1950. According to Soviet records a MiG was in fact hit in a combat at the same time, though was able to return to base with engine damage. I am looking for information, first hand and otherwise on F-80 units air combat with MiGs, especially in the period November 1950 thru mid 1951. A few of these encounters are well known and written about in published US works but most are not, sometimes they are only barely mentioned at all in available US records. But some had surprising results from the Soviet perspective that I believe would make them very interesting if described in detail from both sides, so this is what I am trying to do. | MARK O'NEILL wrote on June 25, 2000 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: INTERESTED PERSON Comments: I am an historian working on the Soviet Air Force's involvement in the Korean War. My neighbor mentioned that he had a cousin shot down in Korea. I looked him up on the POW/MIA data base and found out that he was a member of the 16th FIS and was shot down on October 12, 1951. The family here in Tallahassee was quite close to Lt. Borschel when he was undergoing flight training here in FL. If anyone knew Lt. Borschel and/or the circumstances of his loss (declared KIA in Sept. 1952), please let me know. I assume that he was probably hit while flying a railroad interdiction raid as the "official" USAF history says that you guys were quite busy with this type of mission throughout Oct.-Nov. before you transitioned to F-86Es. If anyone has any interest in the Soviet pilots who flew in "MiG Alley", I'd be happy to share my research. Thank you for your help, service and Happy 50th An Keywords: 16th FIS K-13, F-80C, Lt.
