Comments: I was stationed on Kempo with the 12th tac during 1953. I allowed the museum at Lackland AFB to copy the year book, which was done in 1953 and the Last Mission book, which was done by our photo lab when the war ended. Along with verious other photos lackland was susposed to make a display of this. They have a photo of me standing on top of a B-26. I hope to see what they have done in November.

Musielewicz's) military box in which he kept his certificates, orders and documents from both WWII and Korea. As soon as I settle in, I will begin the scan of the letters, orders and other documents that have to do with the squadron.

Dr Jim wants to know how many members of the three squadrons intend to attend the reunion in Niagara Falls during October 2009 (or want to postpone the reunion until 1010) Dr Jim's address is: 7545 Arborcrest Street, Portage, Michigan 49024. Drop him a line and tell him what you want to do about the reunion.

INSTEAD, THE RESERVES TOOK THE FIELD FIRST AND NEVER GOT A BREAK IN THE ACTION. WHILE I WAS AT KIMPO, 12/28.51 UNTIL ABOUT 6/1/52, RESERVE CREWS AT RANDOLPH AFB MUTINIED TO PROTEST THE LACK OF REGULARS GOING TO KOREA. BECAUSE OF THIS, I GOT OUT. I VOLUNTEERED TO GO TO KOREA, AFTER SERVING IN EUROPE VOLUNTARILY.

Comments: Ref Msg 48938 by Robert Finch: I was a nav in 12 TRS from Nov 51 to May 52. The other squadrons were 11 TRS, flying RF-80's; and 45 TRS, flying RF-51's, not 8 TRS and 15 TRS. Further, the waist nav positions were fitted with AN/APN-9 Loran sets in the waist position, not Shoran sets. As I recall, there were two station pairs operated by the CG which provided pretty good nav info on the west coast of N.Korea, less useful in the central area, and rather weak in the northeastern area.

A very good reference regarding the operations of the 12th TRS can be found on the Air Froce Museum web site at www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/research/attack/a4/a4-13.htm, as well as http://afhra.maxwell.af.mil/wwwroot/rso/squadrons_flights-pages/0012rs.html

Comments: The 162nd Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron was based at Langley AFB, VA just prior to the start of the Korean War in 1950. The RB-26's were flown to Fairfield AFB, CA, then on to Hickam AFB, Wake Island, and finally to Miho Airfield, Japan. The main body of the squadron went on TDY status by ship to Yokahoma, and subsequently to Miho. The planes started flying photo reconnaissane missions almost immediately, using photoflash bombs to illuminate the targets at night. The squadron was moved to K-2 (Tague)just before the Pusan Perimeter, when some of the men were flown to Nagoya, Japan. As soon as the Inchon Landing was completed, they were returned to K-2. The squadron was renamed as the 12th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, and the personnel were placed on permanent status in Korea. In September, 1951, the squadron was moved to K-14 (Kimpo), but flew night missions out of K-13 (Suwon)for about a month, due to repairs being done at night on the runways at K-14. The Squadron patch depicts a crow holding a flashbomb in one wing, and a camera in the other. The moon and star signify that it was a night flying squadron. The lettering above the crow says 12 Tac Recon Sqdn, and the lettering below the crow says Night Photo. The cigar, the smoke, and the red hat were added by the artist who made up the original drawing (a friend of one of the photographers). The RB-26's were also used for Weather Reconnaissance (using the same squadron personnel), but designated as the 6166th Weather Reconnaissance Squardon. Most of the replacement aircraft came in from Hill AFB, out of storage at Piote Texas. All of the original 162nd TRS aircraft were modified at the same time, and were very similar in configuration, but the replacement aircraft were a hodge-podge of varing equipment and condition. The 162nd A/C were painted solid black, except for a checkerboard pattern on the vertical tail. This was dropped shortly after arriving in Korea, and all A/C were painted solid black. The gunner position was removed, and a Shoran Beacon was installed for a second navigator. That is why the 12th TRS flew with a pilot and two navigators (except when a camera technician took the place of the rear navigator on certain special missions.) The 67th TRG was made up of three flying squaddrons, TH 8th, 12th, and 15th TRS. The 8th TRS flew RF-80's, while the 15TH TRS flew RF-51's on armed reconnaissance missions in daylight. The 12th was the only night flying squadron. After 1952, the 8th and 15th TRS converted to RF-86's. If you need any other information, leave an e-mail message. Hope this answeres some of the questions that were posted regarding the 12th TRS.

Sadly, the pictures I have found depict very little of the aircraft. Most are frontal shots of a black aircraft. Can anyone help? Blackbirds patch |

Steve Zahm wrote on 2003-03-06 13:43:18.0
Comments: Hi:
I recently rediscovered a patch that belonged to my father T/Sgt Theodore (Ted) A. Zahm (deceased). He served in Korea as a member of the Blackbirds but most of our family stuff has been lost over the years as he died in 1967 and my mother remarried. I am looking for unit information and any info about his service. I do have his dog tags but I do not know where they are at the moment. The patch has a blue background with a crow or raven with a red hat smoking a cigar and holding what looks like a bomb in its left hand and something that looks like a gray satchel in the other hand. There is a star and a quarter moon (man in the moon) just below and near the crows left foot. Across the top is written Alone! Unarmed! Unafraid? with Blackbirds written across the bottom. I always understood that my dad was a radar operator and after he came home served in SAC and later as an air traffic controller at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City where he retired from active duty. He was killed in a plane crash in New Mexico in 1967. He was stationed in Japan when I was born in 1956 and I have been told that his military records were lost in a fire. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Steve Zahm

Comments: The Air Museum is currently looking for any information from those serving in the 12th Tac.Sqdrn. during the Koren War, who may have flown or crew'd on RB-26C 44-35323. We have found two color photos of this aircraft at Kimpo. Neither of these photos show any names or nose-art. This aircraft seems to be the only surviving RB-26. Like many invaders "323" was used as a fire bomber for the majority of its life after being stricken from service in July of 1958. It was donated to the Air Museum @ 1980. We would love to here from anyone regarding the combat history of 44-35323. The invader is "airworthy" and is currently based at The Air Museum's new satilite facility Vale'Airport Grand Canyon Ariz. I can also be reached at the museum daily. Please call 909 597 4754 and ask for Kyle Rohman. Thanks to all!

Comments: Was in 12th Tac Recon from Jan til July 53, was "Nose" nav, with Jim Wade as pilot and Ray Falke as "Rear" nav. Have not missed Kimpo, "Bedcheck Charlie" or those stinking rice paddies one bit. Next to Phan Rang Vietnam and Sidi Slimane French Morocco, it is the least likely place I will ever revisit. Comments: My late-father, Joe L. Parkin (AO2058537), served as a first lieutenant navigator in the 12th Tac Recon Sq. in Korea during the late-spring and summer of 1951. He flew in a plane called the "Martini Kid" with Lt. Ray Graham and a pilot named Meek. I am interested in getting in contact with anyone who might have knwon him, as well as learning more about the mission, equipment, and organization of the 12th TRS.
