I joined them just south of Tokchon in June 51. Around March/April '52 we moved to a hill about a mile south of the Imjin and found human remains when digging rain ditches round the tents. Mostly Chinese.

41 INDEPENDENT COMMANDO RM

RICHARD NEWELL wrote on October 17, 2008

City and State: PRESTON Q

Comments: Royal Marine Roland (called Ron sometimes) Newell served in Korea at Wonsan (I can recall him mentioning Wonsan Bay or Islands). He "volunteered" whilst stationed at Lympestone, and went via troopship and RNZN Frigates (the latter from Sri Lanka where they "missed" the troopship's departure by minuted apparently). Dad died in 1967 and I am now reasearching the family history including his war service as he was the only member of that generation in his family actually allowed to sign up-proscribed occupations. Does anyone out there have any info on the actions of his unit, or where I can find detailed info. Whilst the USMC went to great lengths to ensure his unit was included with the USMC Division when it was awarded a Presidential Citation, I cannot find anything else.

I have very little to go on other than his rank number and that he sailed on The Empire Windrush. Did you serve with a Leslie Williams in Korea in 1952/3? I am told by my Mother that he was known as Taffy Williams to his friends. Les was at that time living in Wolverhampton although he was originally from Wales and moved to Wolverhampton from Brecon.
