TONY LOY SR wrote on March 30, 2013 City and State: WINCHESTER VA Unit: Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: Good Morning, I have recently come into the possession an Odd Black Felt Type Patch that has C.E. Stoeffler in Gold Wire Bullion at the top, a set of Flight wings with the Navy Anchor also in Wire Bullion and the letters A on the left side of the Anchor and the Letter C on the opposite side. At the bottom of the Patch is VR-21 Hawaii also in the Old Bullion Wire. It is in remarkably good shape but has Age and Patina too it so I believe it too be possibly from the 1950's ?? I am a collector of Military Items and I located this patch in Martinsburg, West Virginia at an Antique Store. If you could forward any information you may have in connection with this Person, Patch, or the Unit and its Time Frame I would greatly appreciate it. Respectfully, Tony Loy Keywords: |

RESEARCHING FOR HISTORICAL ARTICLE |
JONATHAN CLAPP wrote on August 21, 2012 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: INTERESTED PERSON Comments: Gentlemen, greetings. I was a kid on Kwajalein, where my father worked for the army in the period 1967-1971. Watching airplanes was one of my favorite activities there. Now I am researching those airplanes, with the intention of writing a modellers guide. I have photos of VR-21 C-130s (among many others), and I imagine C-118s also landed there from time to time. I would be very glad to correspond with anyone who served with VR-21 during that period who could help me with many questions about the markings of the planes, and the operations of the unit in the Western Pacific during the 1960s and 70s. VA CLAIMS AND FLIGHT ORDERS |
FRED GHARIS wrote on August 28, 2011 City and State: Unit: VR-21 Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: Hi - I was in VR-21 between March 1965 and April 1968. I usually flew 1st radioman. I have about 25 Flight Crew operating orders beginning September 1965 and ending January 1968. Basically, each flight order shows the name, rank and serial number of each flight member and the flight number. It DOES NOT SHOW any details about the flight itself. Since I have so many, it would be impractical to list the names of all of the flight crew members for all of the flights. In addition, I have about 25 travel claim forms that shows dates and locations of departures and arrivals for various flights. Although I was in Vietnam just about every month, I have only 2 travel claims showing stops in Vietnam. One is for December 1965 and the other is for May 1966. Many of these forms are hard to read but are legible. If you think I might be able to help you with a VA claim, send me an email with the subject line "VR-21 Flight Data" and your name, rank and serial number. I will look at the flight crew orders to see if you are listed on any of them. If so, we can go from there. Hope this will help. VR-21 HISTORY |
NICK WILLIAMS wrote on March 3, 2010 City and State: WAVERLY IA Unit: VR-21 Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: I have written an award-winning, comprehensive journal article on the history of VR-21 and its antecedent squadrons VRJ-1 and VRU-1 from 1945 through "Pineapple Airlines'" disestablishment in 1977. In addition to the well-known C-54s, C-118s, and C-130s, did you know that VR-21 also flew the R4D, PBY, PB2Y, TBM, JRB, P2V, or one Stinson OY-2? This article also includes some early history of VR-1, VR-30 and VRC-50. I'll be happy to send a copy to those interested if you will send me your mailing address and a buck or two to help defray copying costs.
