Comments: My dad, Edward (Ned) P. Coleman, has recently died of pancreatic cancer. He served with VC-5, VC-6, and VP-24. My sisters and I are trying to find out when, where, and what his duties entailed. If anyone has any information which would help us, we would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you.

Looking for information on VP-24 P2V-2 BUNO 122465 or 122466

Joe Hawkins wrote on 2003-04-19 06:42:02.0

Comments: I am looking for the history of a P2V-2 Neptune that had the tail conde of HA.

It was one of the following BUNO's - 122465 or 122466.

I think it was 122465.

This P2V-2 was sent to VX-6 and was modified to P2V-2N specs (skis, bomb-bay internal fuel tank, stripped of the MAD and electronic gear). It crashed while attempting a white-out condition landing at McMurdo Station on Oct 18 1956. 4 Shipmates lost their lives.

I have a webpage that is dedicated to the aircraft of VX-6. I have a picture of one of these two P2V-2's in Antarctica with the HA tailcode still on the tail.

I would like to know - VP-24 did not go to Antarctica did they? Did VP-24 bail a P2V-2 to VX-6 for Operation Deep Freeze?

Any answers, photos, sea stories would be great!

Joe

I have a question for you now. I looked at the Navy part of the Korean
War Project Site on the Internet. In the "searching for" section,
Squadron VS 24 and VP 24 (my dad served in these two squadrons). How
do I get them added? I would like to search for some of his buddies
for a reunion.

My dad, Charles Sofios also known as Bird, was involved in the Korean
War from 1952 to 1953. He was in both squadrons V.S. 24 and V.P. 24.
He served on the ships the USS Siboney, the USS Palua, and the USS
Cabot. He was stationed at the Naval Air Auxilliary Station in
Chincatigue, Virginia, the Naval Air Station in Quensep, Rhode Island,
and also at the Naval Air Station in Port Lyaultey, French Maraco.

I am looking for a gentleman who went by the name of Snookie, another
called Rich Faye and anyone else who may have known my dad. I want to
have a reunion for him.
