Comments: I am looking for anyone that knew my father. He was a squadron leader for VF-874 in Korea. He flew F4Us in Korea and F6F in WW-II.LT. He also taught at the Navy's flying school in Corpus Christi, Texas from 1942-1945. Len Gundert was shot down on October 3, 1951 while on a bombing mission over North Korea. He parachuted out but was badly burned and hit part of the plane when he bailed out. He was recovered from the ocean DOA by a Destroyer. Please contact me if you will. Thanks, Mark

Comments: I have been a military aviation historian / writer for the past 40+ years. This has led to my having numerous books and articles published. You can get on line and go to either www.amazon.com or www.google.com and when they ask for "search", type in Warren Thompson. It'll show you a lot of what I have done in recent years.Currently, I am writing a book on F4U Corsairs in the Korean War. I would like ot hear from anyone that served in VF-874 during that period.

Comments: My father KC Darby flew with VF-874 on the Oriskany during the Korean War. His stories of Red Carmody and others inspired me as a young man to become a pilot as well. I am a Major in the Marine Corps, Flying UH-1N "Hueys" and based at Camp Pendleton CA. I am working on a scrapbook of photos, articles and memorabilia of his time in the Navy, with the goal of giving it to him for his 80th birthday at the end of August. I have made contact with Admiral Carmody, and had a great conversation with him - any information from other squadron mates of my Dad would be greatly appreciated!

Comments: We were the last Squadron to have the F4U-4s. One of our planes with Lt. Kummer as pilot came in with a live bomb. It exploded as he caught the cable and plunged forward. Two sailors were killed and approximately 20 more were injured. The pictures came from one of the men killed who was responsible for taking pictures of each aircraft landing. I would like to know where Lt. V. Z Lumper is and how I could reach him.

Comments: Member of the Electronics gang from recall at Oakland, thru deployment. Herb Newmark (above) was Ass't Electronics Officer, as I recall, Frank Piltz was Div. Officer. I have pictures of both taken at the O'Club at North Island. Frank got shot in the foot by small arms fire, and we found the slug imbedded in the gyro of the autopilot the next day. Remember the great barbeques at El Centro, Herb?

Comments: I am trying to gather information about the air combat operations of USN squadrons in Korea. In case of VF-874 I am interested in any information about the MiG encounter of CVG-102 F4Us and ADs from Bob Homme Richard 27 November 1951, or the more well known encounter 18 November 1952 by CVG-102 F9Fs from Oriskany. Any further info on any of these encounters, by VF-874 or any squadron in CVG-102, first hand or not, would be helpful.
