| ALLEN HOGGATT wrote on February 8, 2011 CITY AND STATE: FLOWER MOUND TX UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My name is Allen Hoggatt. My uncle LTJG Fred Koch was a pilot with VF-874. His Corsair exploded inflight over North Korea 0n 08/11/1951. Also lost on this mission was LT Jim Venes. His Corsair also exloded inflight. I was wondering if anyone has any old squadron photos of the deployment or predeployment in El Centro or North Island. Thank You, Allen Hoggatt Keywords: VF-874 , CV-31 |

LOOKING FOR ANYONE THAT KNEW KC (KEITH) DARBY |
| KEITH DARBY II wrote on June 18, 2006 CITY AND STATE: CARLSBAD CA UNIT: HMLA-267 SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My father KC Darby flew with VF-874 on the Oriskany during the Korean War. His stories of Red Carmody and others inspired me as a young man to become a pilot as well. I am a Major in the Marine Corps, Flying UH-1N "Hueys" and based at Camp Pendleton CA. I am working on a scrapbook of photos, articles and memorabilia of his time in the Navy, with the goal of giving it to him for his 80th birthday at the end of August. I have made contact with Admiral Carmody, and had a great conversation with him - any information from other squadron mates of my Dad would be greatly appreciated! | BOBBY EARL PETTIT wrote on January 4, 2005 CITY AND STATE: SPARTANBURG SC UNIT: VF-874 SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: NAVY VETERAN - KOREA Comments: We were the last Squadron to have the F4U-4s. One of our planes with Lt. Kummer as pilot came in with a live bomb. It exploded as he caught the cable and plunged forward. Two sailors were killed and approximately 20 more were injured. The pictures came from one of the men killed who was responsible for taking pictures of each aircraft landing. I would like to know where Lt. V. Z Lumper is and how I could reach him. Keywords: Lt. Herb Newmark (above) was Ass't Electronics Officer, as I recall, Frank Piltz was Div. Officer. I have pictures of both taken at the O'Club at North Island. Frank got shot in the foot by small arms fire, and we found the slug imbedded in the gyro of the autopilot the next day. Remember the great barbeques at El Centro, Herb?
