Comments: Saw Jim Bass's entry. I must have worked side by side with him. Both were AT-2 and VF-32. I don't know how this works at all. Thanks. I remember (I THINK) Gitmo. Chasing Migs out of airspace. Movies and great food. Ships Co. headed out to sea for drills. I got aboard from Sicily and came back to US in approx. 6 weeks. Docked in Jacksonville.

Comments: I have been a military aviation historian / writer for over 40 years. This has led to my having numerous books and articles published. You can get on line and go to either www.amazon.com or www.google.com and type in Warren Thompson where they ask for "search". Currently, I am writing a book on the F4U Corsair in the Korean War. I would like to hear from anyone that served in VF-32 during that era.

Comments: On the 1st of February 2005, Fighter Squadron 32 will observe its 60th year of service to the Navy. Im reworking a website that I hope will pay tribute to VF-32 sixty years, presently the website marks the 30 years of service with the F-14 Tomcat. I would like to include the other aircraft flown and maintained by the Swordsmen. You can visit the website at: http://www.geocites.com/fitron_32/ Any info, suggestion or photos of this time period would be much appreciated it. Thank you.

LOOKING FOR AIRCRAFT 'SIDE NUMBERS' |

Bill Woodier wrote on 2004-01-22 11:10:33.0
Comments: I am trying to find information on the aircraft numbers (carried on the engine cowling) for two F4U-4 Corsairs from VF-32. One was flown by ENS Jesse Brown and the other by LTJG Tom Hudner when both aircraft were lost on 4 Dec 50 while conducting air strikes in the vicinity of the Chosin Reservoir. I am also looking for copies of photos of either/both aircraft from before their loss. LTJG Hudner was rescued by helicopter while ENS Brown's body was never recovered. Thank you for any information anyone might have

Comments: I am trying to gather information about the air combat operations of USN squadrons in Korea. In case of VF-32 I am especially interested in encounters with MiGs during the November 1950 strikes on the Yalu bridges. Official archival information about these operations, especially those of the Leyte (CV-32)/CVG-3, is very sketchy. In addition to VF-31 F9Fs victory over a MiG 18 November MiG sightings or encounter by VF-32s F4Us are also mentioned but no detail. Any info about these operations by any sdn of the air group, on any date in November 1950, first hand or not, would be helpful.

Comments: I, know that this plane is in a museum in Polk City, Florida. She looks almost exactly the same as she did when the Gustafson family sold her. The only difference that I can see is that Merle's name is no longer on the side of the plane. I too am looking for info on the squadron she was in & who possibly flew her in the war - what carrier she was on - was she in the reserves? Is the "G" that's on the tail a real unit, or did he just have it on there because of his name? Thanks!

Does anybody remember this Corsair? |

Darin Strobel wrote on 2002-01-29 18:10:12.0
Comments: I am looking for Pre-1959 information on F4U-4 Corsair BuNo 97286. Does anyone remember working around this Corsair? I really don't know what squadron it serve in. All I do know that it had a large "K" on its tail when it was purchased by my father's friend Merle Gustafson in 1972". He named his corsair "Angel of Okinawa". I also would like to know where I could find a list of the BuNo of the particular aircraft that serve under a squadron during Korea.

Memorial planned
On 6/12/97 PeteNotz@aol.com wrote:
VF-32 is fighter squadron 32 based out of Oceana

the squadron heritage goes all the way back to WW II. We

We are gearing up to build a memorial and you want to pay
special tribute to VF-32.
Thanks again for the help.
