Comments: I just had my book on F4U Corsair Operations in the Korean War published. Currently, I am writing a hard bound / coffee table book on U.S. Naval Aviation in the Korean War. It will consist of the unit histories, detailed comments from various squadron personnel and lots of color slides / photographs of the aircraft. If any of the VC-11 people have anything that might help me, I would appreciate their contacting me.

Comments: Hoping to hear from anyone with any information, memories, sea stories, photos or artifacts, (squadron patches, etc).

My Dad, Norman E. Torrey, was a radioman on AD-4Ws, on two Korean War cruises in Princeton. If anyone remembers him I would like to hear from you. He was in VC-11, Det. E.

I am also trying to collect a squadron patch from every squadron that was on Princeton during the Korean War. If you have one that you would be willing to part with, please let me know.

I am in the process of building a model of Princeton as it appeared during the Korean War period. If you have any photos of the ship, or of air ops, they would be very helpful and I would be happy to pay for copies.

Thanks for any help,
Thanks to all who served!

Respectfully,
Michael Torrey

Did a lot of work on those Guppies. Was plane Captain on Boxer and Hornet and line PO on Phil. Sea.
I still think the Sky Raider the best all around plane ever built and the Navy the best learning experience I have had.
Have been able to contact only few I knew. Went to reunion in San Diego a few years back and knew no one.
Have a fair and following wind.
If I ever say, "coming about to blow stacks," do not head for the fantail. Yeah, I know that is lost on the nuke sailors.

Comments: I was in VC-11 Spring 1951-Fall 1953. However, I worked out in the line shack until going to sea on the Kearsarge in August 1952.

People that I remember from the VC-11 detachment on the Kearsarge are radar operators ATC Neal Reid, AL1 Johnnie Coleman, AL2 Robert Drennan, and AL2 ? Darrah (from West Virginia). Radar technicians were AT1 Kenneth Prideaux, AT3 Ted Byrnes, and AT2 Ted Hite. I was low man as AT3 at the time. Pilots I remember were Lts. Smith, Brown(?), and Holmes. Officer radar operators were LtC Van Schaik and Lt(jg) Lew Friend. I am not sure I have the names correct. I am not in contact with any of them.

After returning from Korea in March 1953 I worked out of the shop on the night shift for a few weeks before being transferred to the Valley Forge which then went to dry dock in Norfolk. That was a move from the best duty in the Navy to the worst. It convinced me to leave at the end of my enlistment.

I think I remember Roger Harper. If so, he is the fellow making a joke about a brand new ensign just as the ensign walked into the shop and demanded to know what Harper had said. Harper said, It is a private joke, sir, and wouldnt tell him.
