Comments: I am looking for any shipmates of my father who served aboard the USS Whiteside during the Korean Conflict. Robert Draper Ozmun (Bob) was a Fire Control Technician Second Class. I have documents showing he served aboard the vessel in 1953. My dad died suddenly in 1969 and I have no living relatives who can provide any information about his naval career. I have a number of items from his time at sea including a collection of photographs of his shipmates with some last names written on the back. If you knew my dad, I'd love to hear from you.

Keywords: Bob Ozmun, Robert Ozmun, Robert D. Ozmun, Fire Control Technician, USS Whiteside, Whiteside, AKA 90,Korean Conflict, 1953.

Comments: Everyone:

My father was on the Whiteside in WWII, at both Iwo and Okinawa.

I told him about your website here, and he wanted me to let you all know that there is indeed a Whiteside Association, and that both the Korean and WWII vets from the ship do have annual reunions. There are also people that maintain good records, plus some other odds/ends like Whiteside caps, etc.

Comments: OH NO! They used that fine vessel as a target ship and sunk it? That ship whose mighty wheel even I had the privilege of wrestling through sometimes surging waters? I have 8MM footage of the bow of USS WHITESIDE rising and plunging into cliffs of water breaking over the focsle. That wonderful ship trembled in the roughest of seas, promising safe passage into quiet waters lit by phosperus meteors peeling off her metal hulls. On those nights of tropical solitude in the middle of the pacific we unwound on hatch covers watching black and white films that made us forget for a moment that we were thousands of miles from home. We chipped paint, stood watch, drilled, signaled, performed the duties assigned to us. We stood in chow lines, wrote letters, read mail when it was delivered and always trusted that metal hull to take us safelly to our next port. We took pride in knowing that the USS WHITESIDE was present in Tokyo Harbor when Japan signed the surrender documents of WWII and there at Inchon at a horrible time. There is a book that could be written on the memories, friendships, sorrows and joys that were sunk with that fine ship when it was sunk by some gladiator of wars to come. She now rests deep in the company of seagoing warriors who went before her. The USS WHITESIDE AKA90 is gone, but not forgotten.
