Comments: My Mother and three brothers boarded the GORDON in February 1947 enroute Yokamama. I was oldest 10, brothers 8, 4, amd 2. We had a "hole" full of Chinese enrote Shanghai. They never came on deck. I saw no soldiers. The weather was horrible. Food terrible. The Squid Boss put boys 8-18 in the old sick bay on an upper deck---UNSUPERVISED!!! The older bastards (all goddamned yankees) picked on us smaller kids all the way across the N. Pacific (14 days). My Dad, a paratroop Captain, beat the feces out of the oldest guy's dad when we got to Yokahma! It was the beginning of a great adventure for us BROs! We returned on a nice ship in late 1949.

Comments: We shipped out of San Francisco on November 9th,1966 on the USS General Gordon to South Vietnam. We ran into a typhoon and were restricted to below deck for three days.It was pretty scary, and after being allowed on deck,we encountered high seas,40-50 foot waves. We docked at Okinawa overnight, but were escorted back on ship because of disordely conduct in the EM club.I was assigned to the kitchen for the three weeks on the ship, which helped considerably staying busy.We spent thanksgiving on the ship and the cooks served us a great turky dinner. The eggs werent too good.Good memories I hope other buddies see this.Greetings.

Comments: As a missionary's kid, I travelled on a lot of Ships. The SS General W.H. Gordon was one of the worst. I was on her in her short civilian career with the American President lines. It was the Summer/fall of 1947 across the Pacific to Manila from San Francisco. Our compartment had 6 bunks in a space 5' X 6' and little more than 9' feet high. There was a steam pipe across the cieling. Bunks were 14" apart (clear space between). One porthole, no fan. I'll never forget how hot it was in bed.

The real excitement of the trip was that we encountered Typhoon Kathleen which devastated central Honshu after it passed us off Formosa. all decks except the top one were awash. Waves lifted the boats in their davits and washed one away. One seam in the plating split and flooded a compartment. Oh how good the cool of the typhoon felt, but I had never been so afraid in my life. There were footprints on the companionway walls! Passengers were confined to their compartments except for going to the head, which was pretty useless. There were many broken bones. So many crew were hurt that experienced and able passengers were drafted to help work the ship. As an ex USN destroyerman that included my Dad. I moved from the top bunk next to the steam pipe to his on the bottom. Men and women were segregated and we didn't hear from mom for days.

Comments: My father-in-law served aboard the USS William Mitchell during the Korean conflict. My husband was putting together a photo album of all of his pictures, using our computer to restore faded photographs, enlarge them, etc., to give him as a Christmas gift. While searching for a good picture of the ship to include in this album, he ran across the website of an artist in Indiana who had done a painting of the ship for her brother-in-law, who also served on board this ship. She has prints available if anyone is interested. Her website is

http://www.steamboathouseart.com

We purchased one and it is a good likeness, and was very reasonable. Can't wait for my father-in-law to see it. We decided to have it framed instead of including it in the album.

Comments: We sailed from Diego in dec of 53. When we hit the ground swells comeing out of the harbor the bow head in our troop compartment was awash in vomit. Most of the marines in that forward area where from the Islands. We stopped in Kobe Japan for 2 days where dropped members of the 3 Div and first air wing. Next stop "Ashcan City" and a long cold ride for New Years Day with the 2/7 and frozen turkey! My draft went home 14 moths later on the USNS POPE and I got orders to MSTS Seattle on the OHARA as crew. Fine food, great sailing ports (Yokahama, Alaska,) and after hour joints in Seattle.

Comments: Nowhere in Gordon's histories have I ever read about a trip made, I believe in Nov/Dec 1945, from Portland Oregon, carrying the first, or one of the first, loads of Japanese civilians being repatriated back to Japan. At the beginning of WWII they had professed their allegience to Japan, so were sent back. The sad part was that their neise, American born, children, who had not attaind the age of 18, were required to go with their parents, whether they wanted to go or not.

Anybody else remember?

Comments: Records say that the Gordon was "Re-acquired by US Navy in May 1961." In early July 1961 I was a troop on the Gordon's first trip to Germany in many years. There were still pipe-fitters on board finishing up work when the ship sailed from Brooklyn Navy Yard. We had a North Atlantic storm and instead of sailing North of England to get to Bremerhaven, we went up through the English Channel and the trip took an extra day. My first time at sea, I was sick most of the way. It was a big ship.

We wondered what the deal was until someone remembered the date...Dec. 7, 1961. Sailed past the hulk of the Arizona..no memorial at that time. Between Pearl and Japan, got caught in a Typhoon...VERY bad 3 days!! Snowing in Japan when we got there. On to Okinawa, arriving just before Christmas. Spent 2 years 2 months in the Far East, 9 months of it in Viet Nam. Wonder what happend to the old "Mitch"?

Comments: Where is ship now? Has it been de-commissioned (mothballs)? If so where and when? How can I get a picture of the ship? Did it serve in Vietnam? One time someone told me that the ship was being used for transporting solely military civilian families and that the ship had been revamped. Any information would certainly be appreciated.

Comments: We were German born Jews that lived in Shanghai for 8 years during WWII. We arrived in San Fransisco on May 16, 1947 on board the Gordon. I was 9 years old that day. I would love to know about the ship - the crew - anything.
