Comments: Went on board early '57, I think, I was the Liberty Card Yeoman, so many knew me, and also the Diary Yeoman. Ran Bingo games. Remember Chief O'Brian, Captain R. J. West. It was quite a Man-O-War ... 6 45's and a couple skeet guns the old man used off the fantail. We actually to some troops, who later became celebrities, over. Don't know any names, but a couple of singer/guitar players made it big. Sold Peanut Butter sandwiches to the troops for extra money. It was not a bad couple of years. I was aboard the year we had no Xmas .. went from the 24th to the 26th. Good Memories .....

Comments: I served on the Shanks for one trip to the Phillipins to bring back mostly dependents. I was an HM1 at the time, early 1955. This was my last ship in my first enlistment. I reenlisted almost four years later and transferred to the Fleet Reserve in 1973 at Marine Corps Air Station, New River, NC as HMCM. Previous to the Shanks, I was aboard the USNS Nelson M. Walker (TAP-125) for one trip to bring back troops from Korea and Japan.

Comments: I sailed from Oakland Army Terminal in Cal. to Okinawa on the Gen. Mitchell in Nov. - Dec. 1961. We arrived in Pearl Harbor to tooting horns, fire boats spouting water, general hub-bub. We wondered what the deal was until someone remembered the date...Dec. 7, 1961. Sailed past the hulk of the Arizona..no memorial at that time. Between Pearl and Japan, got caught in a Typhoon...VERY bad 3 days!! Snowing in Japan when we got there. On to Okinawa, arriving just before Christmas. Spent 2 years 2 months in the Far East, 9 months of it in Viet Nam. Wonder what happend to the old "Mitch"?

Comments: My Father was on the Army Transport:USS Gen.William H. Gordon with the 398th Infantry on Oct.6th 1944. It took off from Camp Kilmer in New Jersey and sailed for 14 days on high seas of the rough Atlantic to the shores of Marseille,France on Oct.20th 1944. The Gordon nestled alongside a keel-over hulk of a gutted ship.American Seventh Army had smashed into the German held Marseille 2 month earlier. the 398th was to meet up with the 180th Infantry. Thanks Gordon for your service !

Comments: Where is ship now? Has it been de-commissioned (mothballs)? If so where and when? How can I get a picture of the ship? Did it serve in Vietnam? One time someone told me that the ship was being used for transporting solely military civilian families and that the ship had been revamped. Any information would certainly be appreciated.

Comments: We were German born Jews that lived in Shanghai for 8 years during WWII. We arrived in San Fransisco on May 16, 1947 on board the Gordon. I was 9 years old that day. I would love to know about the ship - the crew - anything.

Comments: I served as a PN2 in charge of troop embark in Fort Mason, San Fran, Calif, and then debark in various location in the far flung reaches of the Pacific. Served aboard from 3/53 to 7/53 then transfered to USNS Gen Shanks for the balance of my tour out of Navy 10/54. For those who served on these ships, chow was great our own bunks private areas, Civil Service crews under contract to USNavy, 12 white hats one chief, two line officers usually reserves. Out for 30 in port for 7 and then back again. San Fran gret liberty town in 50's. If ou served on MSTSPAC Gen ships write me.
