Comments: Hello All,

I want to make an offer out to all looking for information about their family members who may have served on this ship in the years of 1952-1953. It was of great pleasure to myself that a few years back while looking for my grandfather I was placed in touch with one Jack Peters, who had actually been a very close friend with my grandfather and they served together on that ship. He shipped me to borrow his copy of the cruise book from the tour of 1952-1953. I made a digital copy of this (though not perfect as I did it by hand with a camera) and I would like to offer that anybody who may be interested in receiving a copy of this please email me and I will figure out how to get you a digitial copy.

Comments: I am looking for anyone who knew my father Walter Gene Wilson.
He was on the USS Valley Forge during the Korean War. I never
was able to know my father since he was killed in 1970 (my
parents divorced when I was 6 months old) I only have a few
pictures of him back in the day, but that is all. I want to
find anyone who knew him and can tell me what kind of a person
he was while in the Navy. My grandmother (his mom) would never
talk about him after his death. He was killed by a drunk
driver in El Paso Texas. So if there is ANYONE who knew of him
or were friends of his, please let me know.

Comments: My father served for over 20 years. He passed this year
and I would like to honor his service. I'm creating a
shadow box with his medals and such. I would like to
include the patches from the ships he served on. Not
having much luck finding ones that old. If anyone has
the ones I need and would be willing to part with them,
I would appreciate it. If anyone knows where I could
find them, I'll take that to. He served on: USS Valley
Forge(CV-45), early 50's, USS ST. Paul(CA-73),
Mid-to-late 50's, USS Benjamin Stoddert, mid 60's, and
USS Prairie, early 60's.

CV-45 ENTERS THE KOREAN WAR

T.E. MOORE wrote on February 6, 2012

City and State:

Unit:

Service or Relationship: OTHER

Comments: On 3,July 1950, the USS Valley Forge CV-45, at 0500,
from the Yellow Sea, began lauching combat strikes
against hostile airfields in and around the North
Korean capital city of Pyongyang. The launch point was
only 100 miles from Chinese communist airfields on the
Shantung Peninsula, and less than 200 miles from the
Soviet Air Garrison at Port Arthur. Propeller-driven
Corsairs and Skyraiders were launched, then the F9F-3
Panther jets were launched. The sortie of these 8
Panthers marked the (first) time in aviation history
that naval jets flew in combat. The aircraft were from
CAG-5. The aircraft reached their target, and swooped
in on the enemy Yak aircraft, destroying at least 9 on
the ground, and shooting 2 out of the air. The CAG-5
aircraft demolished 3 hangers, cratered the runways,
and scored a direct hit on the field's fuel storage
facility. That afternoon, with British aircraft from
the Royal Navy's carrier HMS Triumph, hit railroad
facilities around Pyongyang, North Korea, destroying
15 locomotives, and assorted rolling stock, as well as
dropping one of the spans of a key railroad bridge
across the Taedong River. Working with the USS
Philippine Sea CV-47, and the HMS Triumph, the Happy
Valley later in July 1950, in TF-77, went into the Sea
Of Japan off the eastern coast of North Korea, and
launched aircraft for the target of The Wonsan Oil
Refining Factory, which produced 500 tons of refined
petroleum products each day. CAG-5 launched 7
Panthers, 10 F4U Corsairs, 11 AD Skyraiders, who
swooped in and destroyed the refining facility. A
tower of smoke rose, visible for 60 miles. Later when
the U.N. seized Wonsan, witnesses to the airstrike
reported that the main power plant, coke furnaces,
water tanks, air compressors, and storage
buildings, had all been destroyed, and that oil had run
in Wonsan streets as deep as two feet. The Happy
Valley strike ended production at the refinery. The
Pyongyang airstrikes decimated the North Korean Air
Force, and in so doing futher discouraged Soviet total
involvement in the air war. The destruction of the
Wonsan Oil Refinery also dealt a serious blow to the
North Korean war machine.

Comments: I am looking for anyone who might remeber my Dad Harry Young a.k.a. Barney or Pappy. He served on the Valley in the late fortys to mid/late 50's. I joined the Navy after he passed away and would like to get some "sea stories" about him or find some of his buddies. Thank you for your time.

Comments: I would like to know if anyone remembers my father Charles (Charlie) Houck. He served on the Valley Fordge in the early 50's, he said he got a "Well done". from the CO for navigating through a Hurricane. He never did talk to me about his service much, but I really want to know what he was like when he was there. He lived in Philadelphia and married Rose Marie in 1953 or '54. I don't know what he did on board because he never talked to me long enough about it. Please help me know this part of my Dad that I never knew.
