| WALLACE HOOKER SR. wrote on May 26, 2011 City and State: HOUSTON TX Unit: NAVY VETERAN Service or Relationship: OTHER Comments: ussUS ulhmann ran aground near the pescador islands off the coast of formosa in 1953 or 1954. the captain of the ulhmann was trying to send a line to nationalist ship that was grounded. As the uhlmann was lowering a whale boat to take the line to the nationalist ship its bow touched bottom. IN a panic, the captain ordered a full reverse. JUST at that moment, a large swell lifted the bow and the ulhmann ploughed into the sea bottom . THE rudder was bent into an L SHAPE AND the ends of all the props broken off. Because of the bent rudder, the ship could only turn to port or steer straight ahead. In 1953 or 1954, the USS Ulhmann DD 687 ran aground off the coast of Formosa near one of the Pescadore Islands. The captain of the Ulhmann was trying to send a line to a grounded Nationalist Chinese ship.He hoped to pull it free. Just as the whale boat was being lowered, the bow ran aground and the captain ordered a full steam reverse and the stern ploughed into the bottom bending the rudder into an L Shape and broke off about a fourth of the propellers and bent the propellar shafts so badly that any speed over a few knots caused violent vibrations through out the ship. Temporary repairs were made in the Philippines. It was obvious that the repairs were temporary because the ship vibrated so violently when we began the traditional squadron race to San Diego. The vibration was so severe that a seam in a small compartment near the stern split and the compartment began taking on water. .
