Details about location of Radio 2

Bernard Samstag wrote on 2009-04-05 23:28:45.0

Comments: Message received from someone building a model of the Toledo, and needs information - as follows:

I searched several websites in an attempt to find a sailor with Radio Man rate, who served aboard the Toledo in the mid 1950's. I'm building a scale model of the USS Toledo CA-133 for a friend whose father served aboard as a radioman who communicated in Morse code.. She was very close to her father, who has passed on, and very proud of his service. I would like to mark the location of the radio room on the model for her. I believe that it was located in the superstructure, between the 5-inch turrets and below the signal bridge. Is this correct? Thank-you very much for any information you're willing to provide about the USS Toledo. Sincerely, Gary Pforr, Alamo, California

Anybody out there can help Gary? < pforr@comcast.net >

Comments: My dad Edward Pickering was stationed on the USS Toledo from 51-53 with his brother in law Robert "Bob" Schumacher. Dad was Fireman. He's still alive and kicking and lives in Arizona. He will be 76 in July, has been married to mom for 56 years in August. He would probably get a kick out of hearing from anyone that remembers him.

Comments: I am the grand-daughter of Earl Dhein. I've been trying to find any information on my grandfather. He passed away in Feb. of 2005. Pretty much I've only got that he's served on the USS TOLEDO (CA-133). I think he would have served somewhere between the 1940s & 1950s. If anyone has any information, stories, and/or photographes I would greatly appreciate anything at this point. I want my kids to know what a wonderful Great Grandfather they had!

THANK YOU TO ALL YOU VETERANS!!!!

The V.A. cannot find anything on him and most of his records were destroyed in the big St. Louis fire back in the 60's Please email me if you have any information. Nothing is too trivial.

Thank You.

Does anyone else remember seeing the only flight of the Spruce Goose in Long Beach Harbor in 48'? Does anyone know where I can find a picture of the SC-1, SCOUT. It was a Curtis Seaplane, our first two on the Toledo were the "Scotch" and "Soda". I was in the 1st Division and my involvement with the "Scotch" and "Soda" was pulling Helmsan for their take-offs and landings.

Comments: Hello, I am a junior at the University of Toledo in Ohio. My grandfather served on the USS Toledo for at least most of his naval career of 8 years and I know he was discharged in 1956. We can't get any stories out of him and when we ask (my whole family says that if anyone can get the stories from him, it's me) he tears up real bad and starts breathing funny. All I know is that he was in Inchon and that he was in two different helicopters that got shot down and he was always near some of the big guns that have caused him to have permanent hearing loss. I have a 10 page paper to write for my history class due at the end of the semester and I was hoping you might be able to tell me some of the stories. I really want to know more about what my grandpa did. I know he was awarded several medals but he never collected them and won't even tell us what ones they are. His name is Robert Leach. Thank you for any assistance you can provide. Barbara Huffman

Comments: Many years since my first entry, and nobody from T DIV or CR DIV has contacted me. I joined the Toledo in 1951 after recommisioning the USS Goss, DE-444, with ET striker attached to my name. T-DIV officer Robert Doxey would not rate anyone who was not a service school graduate, so I transferred to CR Division where I finished out my enlistment in September, 1953, courtesy of ALNAV 46, which let me out two months early. I raised a family of four (2 and 2), was widowed, remarried and now have a 19-year-old daughter in College and a 15-year-old son in High School. Life is good on the West Side of Los Angeles, and I've finally stopped dreaming that I am back aboard the Toledo . . . wandering around, lost as usual. Web page at: http://www.bsamstag.com

The passing of Billy Ray Rayburn

David Rayburn wrote on 2004-02-08 13:39:00.0

Comments: I'm a little late in posting this here, but I think you all deserved to know. Billy Ray Rayburn passed away this last April in Boise, Idaho. He was on board the Toledo from 1950-53, and worked with those powerful eight-inch guns. I've heard many stories over the years and I am thankful that I can still remember many of them. If anyone knew my dad, I would love to hear from you. Also, I am desperately looking for any photos of the crew (which may include him) from those days. I have never seen one of those yearbooks I hear about. I am also on the lookout for any mementos from the ship from that era. Bill was a great man and he was damn proud of his service on the CA-133... so much that it's passed on to me. As long as I live, the Toldeo will not be forgotten.

1955 was transferred to Chicago/Great Lakes for discharge in February 1956.

Passed away August 1995. When I was a child, people would ask me if my father was ever in the service. After I replied yes, they would tell me "I thought so - he carries himself like a U.S. Marine."

And that he was.

Update 14 Feb 2004 from Cindy:

I also wanted to update my posting to report my father's death 18 months ago. I enjoyed hearing from him about his adventures on the USS Toledo and treasure the photos he gave me. I don't know it this would be of any interest to anyone or not. I lived
in arizona for about nine years and about'91 or'92 i purchased at a
thrift store a silver ice bucket that had on it an inscription that
said:

To the Wachter's from the captain and the officers of the wardroom of
the USS TOLEDO CA 133 dted 1958.

i brought it out last night to polish it and my cousin told me i should
probably do some checking on the internet to see if maybey the captain
or family members would have an interest in it.

Please e-mail me at dbqelmtr@aol.com if you have any information on
crew members of the uss toledo ca 133

Thank you,

Renae

I have an aunt, who is divorced, and has begun to date a man who
actually served on the USS Toledo. He is a wonderfull person, who I
like a lot. He told me that he had served in the USN aboard the
USS Toledo.

He said he had no pictures, no contacts, nor any way of getting any in
conjuction with his ship. I would like to surprise him by finding some
any of his former shipmates, or pictures.

Here is all I know about him so far (that is relevant). His name is
Carol. He served aboard the Toledo during the "Korean incident"
He lives in the western portion of North Carolina. He said he was
aboard it when it was struck by three torpedoes at once.

He also said he had a gun shot-out from underneath him.
Please e-mail me back.

Sincerely,
Daniel G. Parker, Jr.
