Comments: Message received from someone building a model of the Toledo, and needs information - as follows:
I searched several websites in an attempt to find a sailor with Radio Man rate, who served aboard the Toledo in the mid 1950's. I'm building a scale model of the USS Toledo CA-133 for a friend whose father served aboard as a radioman who communicated in Morse code.. She was very close to her father, who has passed on, and very proud of his service. I would like to mark the location of the radio room on the model for her. I believe that it was located in the superstructure, between the 5-inch turrets and below the signal bridge. Is this correct? Thank-you very much for any information you're willing to provide about the USS Toledo. Sincerely, Gary Pforr, Alamo, California
Anybody out there can help Gary? < pforr@comcast.net >

Comments: My dad Edward Pickering was stationed on the USS Toledo from 51-53 with his brother in law Robert "Bob" Schumacher. Dad was Fireman. He's still alive and kicking and lives in Arizona. He will be 76 in July, has been married to mom for 56 years in August. He would probably get a kick out of hearing from anyone that remembers him.

Comments: I am the grand-daughter of Earl Dhein. I've been trying to find any information on my grandfather. He passed away in Feb. of 2005. Pretty much I've only got that he's served on the USS TOLEDO (CA-133). I think he would have served somewhere between the 1940s & 1950s. If anyone has any information, stories, and/or photographes I would greatly appreciate anything at this point. I want my kids to know what a wonderful Great Grandfather they had!
THANK YOU TO ALL YOU VETERANS!!!!

The V.A. cannot find anything on him and most of his records were destroyed in the big St. Louis fire back in the 60's Please email me if you have any information. Nothing is too trivial.
Thank You.

He never spoke about his time in the Navy, not sure why. I never pressed for more information. If there are any group/team pictures that are flowing around, I would love to see them.

Does anyone else remember seeing the only flight of the Spruce Goose in Long Beach Harbor in 48'? Does anyone know where I can find a picture of the SC-1, SCOUT. It was a Curtis Seaplane, our first two on the Toledo were the "Scotch" and "Soda". I was in the 1st Division and my involvement with the "Scotch" and "Soda" was pulling Helmsan for their take-offs and landings.

Comments: Hello, I am a junior at the University of Toledo in Ohio. My grandfather served on the USS Toledo for at least most of his naval career of 8 years and I know he was discharged in 1956. We can't get any stories out of him and when we ask (my whole family says that if anyone can get the stories from him, it's me) he tears up real bad and starts breathing funny. All I know is that he was in Inchon and that he was in two different helicopters that got shot down and he was always near some of the big guns that have caused him to have permanent hearing loss. I have a 10 page paper to write for my history class due at the end of the semester and I was hoping you might be able to tell me some of the stories. I really want to know more about what my grandpa did. I know he was awarded several medals but he never collected them and won't even tell us what ones they are. His name is Robert Leach. Thank you for any assistance you can provide. Barbara Huffman

Comments: Many years since my first entry, and nobody from T DIV or CR DIV has contacted me. I joined the Toledo in 1951 after recommisioning the USS Goss, DE-444, with ET striker attached to my name. T-DIV officer Robert Doxey would not rate anyone who was not a service school graduate, so I transferred to CR Division where I finished out my enlistment in September, 1953, courtesy of ALNAV 46, which let me out two months early. I raised a family of four (2 and 2), was widowed, remarried and now have a 19-year-old daughter in College and a 15-year-old son in High School. Life is good on the West Side of Los Angeles, and I've finally stopped dreaming that I am back aboard the Toledo . . . wandering around, lost as usual. Web page at: http://www.bsamstag.com
