DETAILS ABOUT LOCATION OF RADIO 2 |
| BERNARD SAMSTAG wrote on April 5, 2009 City and State: CULVER CITY CA Unit: CR-DIV / FORMER T-DIV Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: Message received from someone building a model of the Toledo, and needs information - as follows: I searched several websites in an attempt to find a sailor with Radio Man rate, who served aboard the Toledo in the mid 1950's. I'm building a scale model of the USS Toledo CA-133 for a friend whose father served aboard as a radioman who communicated in Morse code.. She was very close to her father, who has passed on, and very proud of his service. I would like to mark the location of the radio room on the model for her. I believe that it was located in the superstructure, between the 5-inch turrets and below the signal bridge. Is this correct? Thank-you very much for any information you're willing to provide about the USS Toledo. Sincerely, Gary Pforr, Alamo, California Anybody out there can help Gary? My grandfather served on the USS Toledo for at least most of his naval career of 8 years and I know he was discharged in 1956. We can't get any stories out of him and when we ask (my whole family says that if anyone can get the stories from him, it's me) he tears up real bad and starts breathing funny. All I know is that he was in Inchon and that he was in two different helicopters that got shot down and he was always near some of the big guns that have caused him to have permanent hearing loss. I have a 10 page paper to write for my history class due at the end of the semester and I was hoping you might be able to tell me some of the stories. I really want to know more about what my grandpa did. I know he was awarded several medals but he never collected them and won't even tell us what ones they are. His name is Robert Leach. | J. MURTHA wrote on February 14, 2004 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My father served on the Toledo until fall of 1952. He name is James (Jim) Murtha and was from Brewster, NY. He is deceased now but I am trying to find anyone who knew him and is willing to share stories. My dad never talked very much about his service or the war. I now understand why. Please e-mail with any info you might be able to share. Thanks Keywords: |

THE PASSING OF BILLY RAY RAYBURN |
| DAVID RAYBURN wrote on February 8, 2004 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: I'm a little late in posting this here, but I think you all deserved to know. Billy Ray Rayburn passed away this last April in Boise, Idaho. He was on board the Toledo from 1950-53, and worked with those powerful eight-inch guns. I've heard many stories over the years and I am thankful that I can still remember many of them. If anyone knew my dad, I would love to hear from you. Also, I am desperately looking for any photos of the crew (which may include him) from those days. I have never seen one of those yearbooks I hear about. I am also on the lookout for any mementos from the ship from that era. Bill was a great man and he was damn proud of his service on the CA-133... so much that it's passed on to me. As long as I live, the Toldeo will not be forgotten. Keywords: |
