Comments: My husband Thomas Milton Omlor served 4 years in the Navy in the middle 1950's.
He served on the USS Tidewater which was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia.
He worked in the boiler room aboard the ship. I don't have a whole lot of other information.
I would like to know when the next Reunion is and where?
I know I have not offered a lot of help, but figured it was worth a try.
Sincerely, Helen Omlor

Comments: Hi Bill, my name is Bill Edsel. It is just for your enjoyment. You know, I was on board form October 1961 to January 1963 and went on the Med tour in 62. But, I ahve heard or seen no one tell about the Tidewater's participation in the Cuban Missile Crisis. I remember being called back to the ship on Sunday, October 21, 1962 because of the Cuban Missile Crisis. We were on high alert, and on I believe it was Tuesday we pulled out of port from Norfolk or Portsmouth to participate in exercises to see if we could figure out a way to stop the Soviets without committing aggression (see the brief history that I copped from the net on the CMC). The Tidewater's role was that of a Soviet ship that would not stop and the other ships were trying to stop us. We steamed ahead full speed, while the destroyers tried to stop us. They tried several things but one thing I remember was that the destroyers would pull a long cable with a buoy on it and they would dart in front of us to see if they could get the cable tangled up in our screw, thus stopping us without committing aggression. They tried this several times with the destroyer darting in front us almost hitting us they were so close. The cable was suppose to drag under our ship and get into the props. But, they never were successful. I also remember that since we were to go into the ship yards soon, they were willing to sacrifice our ship to see if they could figure out a non-aggressive way to stop a steaming ship at sea. We did this for a full day or so. But, then the next day we heard that they had stopped at sea according to the outline below. So, in a real sense the Tidewater played an important role in the Cuban Missile Crisis. I remember that we were all pretty scared about what might happen. And, after watching the movie 13 Days, I believe, we should ahve been very afraid. William M. Edsel, Lithographer, Third Class, now CEO for a group of physicians called the Pinehurst Surgical Clinic in Pinehurst, NC.

Comments: The Official Web Site for the USS Tidewater is located at www.UssTidewater.org - I am the web site sponsor/originator and with the help of about 80 other former USS Tidewater Sailors have formed an association with plans for a reunion next year (2004). We are having a kickoff meeting in September 2003 to form a reunion committee, nominate officers and recommend bi-laws to the general membership. Membership is open to former Tidewater Sailors, their decendents or families, or anyone who may have ties the the Tidewater and wishes to become a member. We have two categories of membership - Life and One Year. You can find out more by visiting our web site at www.UssTidewater.org.

Comments: I searched an found that after decommisioning, it was transferred to foreign country[Indonesia.?] There is some but little detail.
I served om the tidewater in the 60's... about 1965 to 1966... When I came aboard , the ship went to the mediterainean for the usual cycle of 7 months there and 7 months here in norfolk. Another AD would rotate the duty. Anyway, according to the navy disposition record, the ship was sold/given to indonesia or some othe 'friendly' country. It's use is unknown...but at least it wasn't scrapped or sunk for reef building. I wondered if a reunion group exists and would like that. Let me know if you have any information.. The navy web sites can give you the specifics to what country got the ship but it says little more. It says the date of decommisioning and date of disposition to the other country. The tidewater was a 'hamul' class i think.... so maybe reunions can be found using that as a keyword....keep me posted..
