SEARCHING FOR THE STORY OF A WOUNDED WARRIOR |
| MARGE WILLHITE wrote on March 5, 2010 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: INTERESTED PERSON Comments: Several months ago I read a comment by the SON of a wounded sailor. I don't know which ship the sailor was on, nor do I remember which ship I was researching. The story given by his son stated his father was receiving a blood transfusion after being wounded, looked at the "container" and found the blood was from himself -- given during a blood bank drive while still in the States before going to Korea. I've wished many times I would have copied it when I found it! Can anyone tell me where I found this story? My husband was on the IOWA when they received the dead and wounded from the Thompson in August 1952. Thank you. Keywords: Wounded Warrior |

USS THOMPSON (DMS38) |
| HENRY ANDERSON wrote on October 25, 2003 City and State: BRAWLEY CA Unit: USS THOMPSON Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN - KOREA Comments: I was aboard the USS Thompson (DMS 38) on 20 August 1952 when we were hit by enemy shore fire. One of my best friends, a guy by the name of Caspo from New York, hurt his hand in the morning and could not take his GQ station bringing ammo up the chain hoist. He took my GQ station on the flying bridge and I moved down to CIC. We went to general quarters to do a firing mission near Songjin. They were faster than us and the first shell burst right over the flying bridge. Caspo and another seaman by the name of Minor were killed instantly. Minor was colored and had a brother on the ship also. A boy by the Name of Bob Jones, a YNSN who worked with me in the ships office, was on the bridge and was wounded also. The Missouri came alongside and took our dead off, and they went into port. We had to stay on station for a couple of days and when we went into Sasebo the Mo was there, and her crew in blues stood at attention as we passed by and played TAPS. Have you ever heard taps rolling across the water. I still get the willies thinking about it. The Thomposn had one hell of a good crew, but not one much on regulations. I think all of us wore levis. If Caspo had not hurt his hand, I would not be here today to send this. Upon coming back to the states in early 1953, the Thompson and the USS Carmick (DMS 33) were sent to Hunters Point, CA where the Caine Mutney was filmed aboard the two ships. The Exec aboard the Thompson was Lt Hooper Keywords: |
