Comments: I am searching for my Father who served on the USS
Shanendoah AD26 in 1973 and believed to have served on
other US Ships from approx. 1950 onwards. He was also in
New Zealand in 1953. He would now be a Veteran and aged
around late seventies to early eighties. At one stage
lived in the Illinois area and Colorado or Oklahoma
areas. If anyone has any details of Stephen's whereabouts
or any contact details it would be very much appreciated.
Thankyou. Suzanne Wilson.

Comments: I am looking for information about my dads tour on the Tarawa. He was ships barber. Unknown when, but he had a photo of the ship with Rock of Gabraltar in the background. Tour probably '46-'49 or '49-'52. When he discharged with friends, they bought Harleys, drove the beaches for a few days then he headed for Montana. Dad never talked about his tour, so we know nothing except the photos. Anybody out there that had a dad or grandpa buy a Harley and play on the beach?

He was 18 years old then and worked in ordinance loading ammunition into the planes. He remembers the ship losing a pilot, Capt. Ralph J. Sayre, and his crewman when the plane went in the water as it was taking off from the carrier over Guantanamo Bay. He also served on the USS Wright. He was in Marine Fighter Squadron 114. He also remembers a return trip from Cuba in Hurricane Hazel when 2/3 of the ship got sick. He said a storm in the North Atlantic was the worst when the ship he was on cracked 18 seams and he tied a rope to himself when he was on deck on guard duty. He would like to hear from people he served with. Please contact me with information. Thank you, and thank you for your service!
