Comments: I served aboard the Taconic from July 1950 to April 1953. That was my only permanent duty station. Prior to that I attended boot camp in San Diego, Class A Radar School on Treasure Island, and CIC School at Point Loma in San Diego.
Was RD 2 at the time of my discharge.

Comments: I served briefly for 6-8 months in 1969.I went on the shakedown cruise to Cuba then returned for decommissioning. I was an IC3. I am looking for names and photos of those in my unit and how to contact them. Never let the Chief know I was a Gyro Tech, got an "Early Out" 90+Days to begin college in Sept 1969 instead of Dec 1969. I was due to check out on monday but did everything to muster out on Friday and left on Friday, Chief returned that Monday, ship returned to mothballs, he was only one qualified to decom the Gyros. Had he know I had the school, I would have lost my early-out, and been stuck with Gyros Decom. I sent the guys a "Care Package" of Seagrams Benchmark Bourbon when I got home to NY
Forgot most of actual names "Tex"? "Sweet"?

Brad Edell wrote on 2005-10-25 00:00:00.0
Comments: My neighbor told me this story: Her brother Marvin Trebacz served on the Taconic during the Korean War. In all the time he was gone their mother had never received a letter from him and was worried. So, she decided to call the Red Cross. They gave her a number at the Navy to call. The gentleman answering the phone asked what ship he was serving on, to which she replied the Titanic. When that was cleared up they were able to confirm that her son was indeed aboard the Taconic, and a letter was sent to the Captain of that ship, from the Department of the Navy, explaining the problem. Apparently the Captain called Marvin up to the bridge and ordered the young sailor to present him, each month, with a letter written to his mother. Marvin died a few years ago, and his sister would love to hear from any of you who knew him. Thanks!

Comments: I served in Taconic from November, 1956, to April, 1957, and had the unusual experience of having no assignment on the ship. ComPhibLant had an oversupply of journalists at the time and I was stowed away in Taconic and was berthed with the snipes. Finally, the ship's carpenter, a warrant officer whose name I forget, asked me to type up all the spec charts which are displayed in every compartment. He put me in the wardroom with a typewriter and treated me royally and was happy if I worked 3-4 hours a day. I had the run of the ship and would often help grizzled first class bosn's mates get liberty cards after hours etc. I had married in February '57 and wanted off. I was detached to ComPhibTraLant and then eventually to Navy air in Pensacola, where I settled.

Comments: It is the end of the summer in 1962. The USS Taconic is returning home from a 7 month Med cruise. The Atlantic Ocean is like glass, not a ripple anywhere in sight. The ship is making flank speed, everyone is anxious and happy about our return to Norfolk. All the petty differences and squabbles that arise after an extended time at sea fall away. Everyone onboard is your friend. At night no one can sleep. We sit on deck until 2 or 3 in the morning and talk about what we're going to do when we get home. One crew member purchased a very large (about 5 feet) Telefunken stereo and brought it on deck. About two days out of Gilbrator we can start to pick radio stations from the states. On deck at night the stereo is blasting and we hear American music that we haven't heard since leaving the states in January. One song gets played more then any other, "Cherry" by the Four Seasons. Today every time I hear that song I am transported back to the deck of the Taconic and expeience a little bit of that wonderful feeling. Let me know if you were also on the deck of the ship listening to "Cherry".

Comments: I served on the Taconic from June, 1965, through May, 1967. I was in the Second Division, which was headed by Ensign Smith, as I recall. If you don't remember him, think Lieutenant Fuzz, from the Beetle Bailey comic strip: Lt. Fuzz could have been patterned after him - they even looked alike. It's been a long, long time, but, as I recall, the First Lieutenant was a former enlisted man, very tough-appearing and gruff, named Schmidt. After all these years, it's hard to remember the names for sure. Some names still come to mind, and I'd be interested in finding out how these guys are doing these days: Eddie Brefeld, who actually came to Vermont to visit me a few years later; Danny Patton, from Talladega; Jerry Decaire, from Maine, and his buddy Phil Johnson, from Philadelphia; Danny Colton, the only other Vermonter on the ship, from Rutland; Tapia, who once caught a shark while we were underway; Zivonovitch (sp.?); George (?) Willey, whose family owned some restaurants around New York City; Chief Radioman Martin; Chief Motika; a cook named Johnny Seaman; My pinochle partner, Hamm; and many others. If nothing else, we could swap stories from those days, and try to figure out whose memories are clearer. There are certainly plenty of stories to tell, and some of them are even true! From liberty/shakedown cruises to "Gitmo" and the Caribbean, to a cold-weather helicopter crash off the coast of North Carolina; from card games to fistfights; from "five and two" on Calle Luna, to the USO in Philadelphia; from boot camp to discharge; from boys to men. Hope to hear from some of you. "Robbie"

Comments: I am trying to get a history of USS Taconic AGC-17 for a friend (Mack Campbell) who served aboard this ship during the Korean War. What I am looking for is a histrical account of this ship from the keel laying up to now or the time she was mothballed or scrapped. Can you render any assistance? I did manage to get the history of the USS Tutuila AGR-4 for my brother who served aboard her during the later days of WWII. Just how I happened upon this information is a mystery to me. I guess this was during my early days with the WWW and I failed to bookmark the web page. Would appreciate any help. Thank you, Franklin

Comments: Although I am a Korean War Vet (served 4/51-3/55) I did not serve in Korea. I have been active in a Chapter of Korean Vets in Rensselaer County, NY. I have been accessing the Korean War Project site for quite some time now. We had 22 casualties from Rensselaer County and I was able to find some information on the site about all of the casualties. The site had some of the names spelled incorrectly and I so notified the Barkers. We had to get the names straight so they could be put on a bronze plaque in the Troy Riverfront Park area. I also found the name of one of the casualties on Johnson's list. I have accessed the MIA, WIA, etc sites which have come in handy not only for Rensselaer County casualties but also for Schenectady County casualties. It's a great site. Kenpage@aol.com

I was in the USN aboard the USS Taconic (AGC 17) during the Korean War.
I did not serve in Korea. However, I am a member of the Northeast NY
Ch. of the KWVA. We had 22 men from Rensselaer County (Troy, NY is
county seat) who were casualties. 1 Air Force, 2 Marines and 19 Army.
Our chapter is attempting to locate some of the family and are trying to
locate pictures of some of the casualties to send off to DC for the
computer at the National KWV Memorial.
I was in boot camp in Newport, RI in April 1951. I then went to Little
Creek, VA for amphibious training. I then went aboard the USS Taconic
(AGC 17) for 3 yrs 7 mos. 26 days. We were in Carribean, the
Virgin Islands, Venzuela, Thule, Greenland, Naples, Italy for 4 months,
etc.
Will be in touch later.
