Comments: I served aboard the USS Taconic from 1962 to March 1966. Im interested in hearing from someone who knew me. I did all the night bread baking from 1963 to 1966. Anyone who can remember me drop me a line. I would like to find out something about Cheif Million and Cheif Taylor and of course my drinking buddy with the last name of Adams. Wag

Comments: It is the end of the summer in 1962. The USS Taconic is returning home from a 7 month Med cruise. The Atlantic Ocean is like glass, not a ripple anywhere in sight. The ship is making flank speed, everyone is anxious and happy about our return to Norfolk. All the petty differences and squabbles that arise after an extended time at sea fall away. Everyone onboard is your friend. At night no one can sleep. We sit on deck until 2 or 3 in the morning and talk about what we're going to do when we get home. One crew member purchased a very large (about 5 feet) Telefunken stereo and brought it on deck. About two days out of Gilbrator we can start to pick radio stations from the states. On deck at night the stereo is blasting and we hear American music that we haven't heard since leaving the states in January. One song gets played more then any other, "Cherry" by the Four Seasons. Today every time I hear that song I am transported back to the deck of the Taconic and expeience a little bit of that wonderful feeling. Let me know if you were also on the deck of the ship listening to "Cherry".

A few months later I was re-assigned to the Supply Div as a Shipservicemen. I worked in the laundry and ran the "geedonk" soda fountain. I was onbaord during the Med Cruise of 1962. Would be interested in hearing from anyone who was also onbaord at the same times.

Comments: I served on the Taconic from June, 1965, through May, 1967. I was in the Second Division, which was headed by Ensign Smith, as I recall. If you don't remember him, think Lieutenant Fuzz, from the Beetle Bailey comic strip: Lt. Fuzz could have been patterned after him - they even looked alike. It's been a long, long time, but, as I recall, the First Lieutenant was a former enlisted man, very tough-appearing and gruff, named Schmidt. After all these years, it's hard to remember the names for sure. Some names still come to mind, and I'd be interested in finding out how these guys are doing these days: Eddie Brefeld, who actually came to Vermont to visit me a few years later; Danny Patton, from Talladega; Jerry Decaire, from Maine, and his buddy Phil Johnson, from Philadelphia; Danny Colton, the only other Vermonter on the ship, from Rutland; Tapia, who once caught a shark while we were underway; Zivonovitch (sp.?); George (?) Willey, whose family owned some restaurants around New York City; Chief Radioman Martin; Chief Motika; a cook named Johnny Seaman; My pinochle partner, Hamm; and many others. If nothing else, we could swap stories from those days, and try to figure out whose memories are clearer. There are certainly plenty of stories to tell, and some of them are even true! From liberty/shakedown cruises to "Gitmo" and the Caribbean, to a cold-weather helicopter crash off the coast of North Carolina; from card games to fistfights; from "five and two" on Calle Luna, to the USO in Philadelphia; from boot camp to discharge; from boys to men. Hope to hear from some of you. "Robbie"

I was in the USN aboard the USS Taconic (AGC 17) during the Korean War.
I did not serve in Korea. However, I am a member of the Northeast NY
Ch. of the KWVA. We had 22 men from Rensselaer County (Troy, NY is
county seat) who were casualties. 1 Air Force, 2 Marines and 19 Army.
Our chapter is attempting to locate some of the family and are trying to
locate pictures of some of the casualties to send off to DC for the
computer at the National KWV Memorial.
I was in boot camp in Newport, RI in April 1951. I then went to Little
Creek, VA for amphibious training. I then went aboard the USS Taconic
(AGC 17) for 3 yrs 7 mos. 26 days. We were in Carribean, the
Virgin Islands, Venzuela, Thule, Greenland, Naples, Italy for 4 months,
etc.
Will be in touch later.
