RAMMIN SAMMY, DAD BROUGHT US ALL ABOARD! |
| ROSS WARD wrote on September 12, 2009 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: Now hear this! Dad brought us up aboard the RAMMIN SAMMY as though we were members of her compliment. I have an outstanding framed photo of the SAMMY, with campaign and tour ribbons, hanging in my living room. Over the years, when asked about how the Moore earned the distinguished title RAMMIN SAMMMY, Dad always chuckled "I think she hit a Booey, head on, outside of Long Beach." It made for fun talk with Dad. GM-1 William R. Ward, reported for duty aboard the USS SAMUEL N. MOORE (DD-747) for all eternity in 1997. The RAMMIN SAMMY will forever be a member of the Ward families crew! HAWAII, JAPAN, KOREA, CHINA Keywords: |

WHEREDID THE NAME OF RAMMING SAMMY COME FROM SEAMAN MDID |
| GERALD LYNCH SR. wrote on March 8, 2009 City and State: GREENVILLE SC Unit: 1ST DIV. USS SNMOORE Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: I'm not completely sure how " Ramming Sammy" got started; however, I was aboard ship handling lines on post side after refueling from tanker "Pursumpsic"(?), when the Capt. gave "right standard rudder", the 1st class helmsman went left standard. I observed the tanker getting closer to me and everyone else had disappeared. I felt I should go too. We bounced off the tanker and went right. On the bridge the 1st class was physically thrown to the deck and the ship was backed down with hard rudder to the right! This was obviously not held against the 1st class as he was at the helm the next refueling. Keywords: coxsin, motor whale boat, 1950-51, Doc Schollar, petty officer Dupee, |

JACK FALE- SERVED 1951-1954/ QM |
| JACK FALE wrote on December 25, 2008 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: I Served aboard the USS Samuel N Moore 747 from 1951-1954. I remember we took a round in wonson harbor when we were in there with the brush, the thomas, and the maddox 8731. It was in the evening just before evening chow and I came down off the bridge for the meal and I felt the engines pick up speed and I ran up to the bridge and releived Benson on the wheel. The captain was given hard right and 2 rounds from the beach would hit in front of the ship then we would go hard left and 2 rounds hit off the bow and the spray came up over the bridge. The first round they fired hit about 2 feet up from our waterline on the starbird side. Hit into the mess decks but fell helplessly into the water as it was a DUD...thankfully there were no casualties due tho this not going off. If you would like to share stories feel free to contact me. Kind Regards, Jack Fale (253) 208-2270 Keywords: Jack Fale Sereved on the USS Samuel N Moore 747 from 1951-1954 and Quarter Master. Hayes He hadn't talked about this until I began researching his story for another purpose. I am so proud of him. I want to know all that I can about this part of his life. I sense that a big of this is painful. HE has seen some gosh-awful results of war. I salute all of you that served with him. I also salute those that served in other venues. Thank you. Keywords: Mr. James Marion Hayes passed away on December 22. 2009. We watched as suddenly Daddy seemed to stand at attention for his eternal Commander-in-Chief. He was clear-headed and a warrior all the way Home. Missing Daddy |
