DALE HOWER wrote on October 22, 2008 CITY AND STATE: SANTEE CA UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: NAVY VETERAN Comments: I served on Seminole for a short time, Oct 69-Sep 70 and made her last cruise before she was decommisioned in 1970. I was an ETR3 and maintained the surface search radar and IFF systems. Also helped install the boat radios and often rode in the heavy salvage boat as duty ET. I've lost my cruise book for the cruise and would like to get a list of what ports we visited, dates, etc. I recall escorting two small PG's across the pond, visits to Hong Kong, Sasebo, Okinawa, Subic and a short stay in Danang. NOV 60 TO NOV 61 TYPHOON AND OPERATION 'PONY EXPRESS'
JOHN LUND wrote on January 1, 2004 CITY AND STATE: EVERETT WA UNIT: OPS DIV SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ......... Comments: I came aboard in Nov 1960 from ETA school. I remember the JO's car in the well deck of the first LCM aft of the superstructure and the trip over the side provided by the typhoon after it broke loose, rammed the ramp down and disembarked. Days at White Beach Okinawa, drinking beer at the beach club while the ship was being loaded with AV gas in drums and munitions simultaneously, halfway expecting the whole ship to explode. Stops in Yokosuka, Nagoya, Sasebo, Naha, Hong Kong. A collision alarm in the South China Sea - "now standby for collision, standby for collision, captain to the bridge, captain to the bridge." The formation had made a flank turn, we were going to make a turn, in line, which placed us on a course directly across the formation and close proximity to the bow of an APA. I remember the APA bow touching the life raft nest on the port side. Anyone else remember those events, places, etc. I left after the ship returned stateside for another school, KWR-37, in NAVSTA Mare Island and then finished my tour aboard the USS Jerome County, LST-848, supporting our high altitude nuclear tests at Christmas Island and Johnston Island in the Pacific Missile Range. Left the Navy as an ET2, recieved a BSME from the UW in Seattle, and designed some equipment for the US Navy's FAST system while working as an engineer for Western Gear in Everett, WA. I would enjoy hearing from anyone who served aboard during that time. Fair winds and a following sea - John Keywords: Anyone else remember the typhoon enroute to Subic Bay from Hawaii, 11-12/60? SEARCHING FOR INFO
ROBIN BANKS wrote on June 1, 2000 CITY AND STATE: NUNNELLY TN UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: I am looking for information about the ship my Grandfather was on in the navy. His full name is Loyal Franklin Allen. He passed away 11 years ago, of stomach cancer and all my grandmother can remember is the ship he was on. The U.S.S. Siminole. I am not sure if this is the correct spelling, but she also said he didn't join the Navy until the tail end of the war. She said his ship brought back POW's. This is all of the information I have, but if you could find any information about this ship and the people who were on it, it would be greatly appreciated. I hope I have given enough information. If not please e-mail me to let me know. Thanks so much, Robin Banks Keywords:
