WES LEEPER WAS MY UNCLE |
| JOHN M. HUTCHINS III wrote on May 21, 2009 City and State: TULAROSA NM Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: Hi Stephen, If you know who Shirley and Lester Holton are then you and I are cousins. Wesley was my Aunt Shirley's brother and I have been told all my life about how he served on submarines. Actually, the story I was told was that he was the commander of the 1st nuclear sub, perhaps a bit of an embellishment but who cares? Anyways, if this thing works feel free to email me. Take Care, John Keywords: |

His name was Bernard ("Bun") Tobin, He was in the Navy 1950-54, transferring from the Battleship Wisconsin in 1952 or 1953. At one point he was based in New London, CT. He was involved in navigation in some way. He died of natural causes in 1978, just after his 46th birthday. His wife, Joan, died several years later. Did he serve on the Sea Fox? Keywords: |

WESLEY ROY LEEPER |
| STEVE LEEPER wrote on November 12, 1999 City and State: WEST LAFAYETTE IN Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: At the outbreak of the Korean War, Wesley Roy Leeper, a Lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserves, was voluntarily recalled to active duty on October 9, 1950. Wes and Edith Leeper and their daughter, Jeanne, moved to Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Hawaii, in October 1950. From 1950 to 1952, Wesley Leeper served aboard the USS Sea Fox (SS402), as Supply, Engineering, Gunnery, and Commissary Officer; he served on the last crew of the Sea Fox, which he helped decommission in October 1952. From October 1952 to 1954, he served as the Education, Gunnery, Navigation, Communications Officers and First Lieutenant aboard the U.S.S. Besuga (SS321), one of the last of the World War II fleet class submarines. The Besuga was one of the few submarines to remain in commission during the period between World War II and the Korean War and, in 1950, was one of the first ships to enter Korean waters in support United Nations forces. Wes's son, Stephen Allen Leeper, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1953, while his father was at sea. Wes Leeper was designated by the Bureau of Naval Personnel as "Qualified for Command in Submarines" in 1954. Wes Leeper reached the rank of Captain, USNR. He died in 1979. Is there anyone out there, who knew my father? I would love to hear from you. Keywords: USS Sea Fox USS Besuga |
