Comments: My father was a bosun's mate on the USS Sandoval in 1952-1953. I'd love to find anyone that remembers him from that time. I'm making a memory book for his great granddaughter.

1963 exercise o/o Morehead City, N.C.

David Wright wrote on 2007-07-16 22:15:21.0

Comments: Comments: SANDOVAL SEA STORY Sorry this isn't about Korea, just an exercise from off the Sandoval in 1963 (could've been'64)I was on the Sandoval for two weeks in 1963 or 1964, in connection with an exercise out of Morehead City, N.C. I was with the 2d Service Bn, 2d Marine Division. During net practice, getting the platoon down into the LCM. After climbing down the net with full gear/blanket roll/rifle/ canteens/etc I had the responsibility of holding the net while everyone came down. Once everyone was down I had the responsibility of holding the it for everyone climbing back up the net, with no one to hold it for me except for a Sailor on one side only, after everyone was back on the Sandoval. I was exhausted after holding the net for the others coming down and going back up so I wasn't ready when I had to climb back up with all the aforementioned gear, and equipment.

Just as I got to the top of the net, my arms too exhausted to pull my self any higher, my sling came loose and my rifle fell back into the boat below, luckily not into the ocean. The rifle was retrieved by one of the sailors down below in the Mike Boat. When I finally got to the top of the net I was so exhausted all I could do was wrap my arms around the netting and hold on to keep from falling into the boat below.

I had to be hauled over the top rail onto the deck where as I remember my arms were both totally numb and un-responding. When someone tried to hand me my rifle, I couldn't take it. At the end of the exercise we offloaded onto another LCM and when our Communications/Radio van was lowered over the side one side of the Van became unhooked because of high seas. Our Van flipped onto itsside, and it took quite a while to get it back on its wheels with the spilled gasoline, oil, and gear scattered about in the boat. We missed our "wave" and so floated around all day waiting for a "stragglers" wave to form up. The USS Capricornus was in the area, and one of the navy crew went up a rope onto the Capricornus after we had gone alongside. With the seas being somewhat rough our boat caught the chain holding the boat to the Capricornus and it was cut by the Mike boat scraping up against the side of the ship. We formed up the Stragglers wave at the end of a long day and made our landing. It was a beautiful thing to see, and exciting to be part of. I remember when the Mike boat opened up we were pretty far out and one of the marines in my platoon fell off the truck into the surf in front of the Van as we drove off the Mike boat into the water. Luckily the heavy wave from the front of the van and the wheel brushed him out of the way unharmed. You might have been there and seen some of that, considering it might be unusual for a Communications Van to flip on its side in an LCM during an exercise.

Wonder what the date of that exercise was. . . I have a web page (not interactive) at darby thorpe > click on: 1. Once a Marine > Click on yellow teletype tape > to view David Wrights pages.

I Would like to get a picture of the enlisted troop quarters showing the racks and some Marines using them for my web page. Thanks in advance for anything you can help me with.

Comments: I deployed aboard USS Sandoval (APA-194) as a member of 3rd Platoon, "A" Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marines during April-September 1967 (Landing Force Mediterranean 1-67). Learned years later that my Uncle, Joe Fann, had served aboard the Sandoval during WWII; participated in both Iwo Jima and Okinawa landings. Many good memories...many outstanding Marines and Sailors "from Ship to Shore with 194".

Comments: I served on the Sandoval. During the 1967 Med cruise with the 6th Fleet the scenes you saw in the movie were shot by a Hollywood film crew while we were participating in amphibious landing training exercises in August. We had just left the port of Catania, Sicily. It was great to get the Marines off the ship for a few days. Comments: While watching the movie Anzio on the History Chanel recently, I observed a troop transport numbered as the USS Sandoval. In addition, the landing craft had "SA" painted on the front. Can anyone provide more information concerning the ships involvement in this movie? According to my TV Guide, the movie was made in 1968. I served on the Sandoval in 1969 and do not recall any shipmates mentioning that the ship participated in this movie. Thank you.

She actually has a hunk of a Japanese fighters propeller from when the Sandoval was attacked On May 28th 1945. Anyway, i would be interested to communicate with anyone who may have worked with her on this awesome vessel. I would also like to get in contact with any vets who may have been on the ship when in was attacked on the 28th.

Comments: I am trying to find out where the Sandoval is currently located. I tracked her up to the 1970s where she was "disposed of by maritime administartion exchange" I know she is probably a reef now or scrapped but I would like to know for sure if she is no longer somewhere I can see her or if she is a reef, where she is located. Any ideas on how to find this out?

Thanks
