Comments: I have been researching my father's time as a merchant seaman during the Korean and Vietnam wars. I came across this photo he took of the U.S.S. Rochester taken sometime in 1951-52. I believe it is located either off Inchon or Pusan as there are hills slightly visible in the background as well as her secondary armament is raised. She appears to be either hauling or dropping anchor as it is partially covering her number. A slight wake is also visible. The other ships appear to be static.
I will e-mail a copy of this photo to whomever requests it. I would be happy to hear from anyone who has further information or can better identify this deployment.

David Doyle wrote on 2004-11-27 21:55:18.0
Comments: Hello all I am looking for a C.E. Meyers who served on the USS Rochester in 1951. He would have been at the San Diego Armed Services YMCA and recorded a 78rpm album and sent it back to a relative in Alton Illinois in Aug of 1951. I have found the recorded songs and the envelope in which it was sent home. I am sure that they would like to have this back if at all possible. And I would like a little history on this if possible.
Thanx

His nickname aboard was "Tiny", since he was one of the tallest members of the crew. He was (I believe) a Fireman 2nd class. If anyone knew him, I would appreciate hearing any stories or remembrances to pass on to his widow and daughters.

Comments: My brother Melvin Leon Grubbs was aboard the Rochester prior to and during the Korean War. He was aboard during the Quemoy (?) insurrection. He of course was my hero and I've been lucky enough to learn so much from him. Unfortunantly, Melvin's life was taken July 18, 1953. He was a true sailor dedicated to his ship and may have been a little foolish now and then to get the opportunity to serve in the front compartment. I am anxious to hear from any of his shipmates. I do have quite an array of USS Rochester Memories, and would feel blessed to hear from anyone who served with Melvin. I am a career Army retiree, having served 30 years, and would have been a Navy veteran, if the Navy recuriter had not been out to lunch, during my visit to the Muncie, Indiana Post Office. God Bless you all, and thank you for your service to this great country of ours.

Comments: Is there any one out there that seen the St. paul bring in a russian mine laying ship with its crew into Japan . This was during the Korean war , and early in the war. The St Paul had put a 6 1n right through the bow, they passed right by us on the dock.
I am very interested in obtaining information on the British Cruiser HMS Jamaica. When she was in the Inchon invasion Sept.1950. She shot down a north Korean plane that had bombed the U.S.S.Rochester I would like very much to get her report on this incident. Earl F.Lanning 1950 -53 . U.S.S.Rochester earl8400@aol.com

Comments: I still drag out the only Scrapbook I have of "The Rock", (CA 124), having served on her from early "52 to late '56. I am curious about the other references to a CA 148. It looks like shipmate Keller (above) and I must have been on the same line handling crew when she returned to Long Beach from her winter 51/52 cruise. I still have the newspaper article and picture on that. I would also like to get some more pictures of her. Paul Dauphinais PN1(Ret)

Comments: I am looking for any information about my father, A. A. Norris, who was a sailor on the USS Rochester during the Korean War. He passed away a few years ago and I just found a book that he had packed away entitled "USS Rochester Operation Korea 1950-51". he never really talked much about his service, I do know he was involved in a large battle on Christmas day. If anyone has any old stories or pictures I would love to hear from you . Thanks.

Comments: I am looking for any information someone might have on my dad. I would also like to know specifics on the "Air Medal - United States" he received other than what the books are saying. It is a royal blue ribbon with a gold orange broad stripe on each side and a narrow stripe on the ends of the same blue. The medal is a 16 point sun burst with a circle protruding out. Overlaying the circle is an eagle in flight with lightning bolts in its tallons. My dad was a mechanic on the choppers as well as other flight craft. I have been told that in the Vietnam War that the mechanics were often the door gunners. If that is true for the Korean War that would explain his reluctance to speak about it.

In Korea I served on USS Rochester CA 148 from the begining to 1952.
I have three battle stars; Pusan,Inchon and Hungnam.
We were at Hungnam providing covering fire as they made their way
to the the evacuation point so this whole story has made quite an
impression on me.
