THE PASSING OF CHARLES L. MINTON |
| THOMAS MINTON wrote on May 29, 2009 City and State: NEW CITY NY Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My name is Thomas G. Minton and I am writing you on behalf of my father Charles L. Minton. It is with the deepest regrets that I inform you that my father passed away on February 7, 2007. I do not know if any of the members of the crew he served with during 1944-1945 are still a live. Please give them my regards and my mother's heart felt regards. My father was a Navy man right up to the end. I know if he were still a live he would have liked to attend this year's reunion. As you may know or don't know my father was awarded the "PURPLE HEART" and the "SILVER STAR". He very rarely spoke about his time in the Navy and what had happen on that day their ship was torpedo. I am very proud of my father and all of the men and women that served during "WW II". I myself served during the "Vietnam WAR". Please give my regards to all of the personal of the "USS RENSHAW DD/DDE 499". Keywords: US Renshaw, DD/DDE 499....1944-1945 |

MEMORIAL DAY TRIBUTE TO THE USS RENSHAW |
| MRS. MARTY KADERLI wrote on March 25, 2009 City and State: FREDERICKSBURG TX Unit: Service or Relationship: INTERESTED PERSON Comments: The USS RENSHAW has a Memorial Wall plaque at the National Museum of the Pacific War and Admiral Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg, Texas. Every Memorial Day they have a standing floral wreath placed at their plaque during our Memorial Day ceremonies. In the past we have had a representative of the ship here to place it (along with about 50 other wreaths - it is a beautiful service) but I have lost contact with Mr. Ray Smith, of Greenblet, MD and do not know who else to contact. Is there a veteran of the RENSHAW who would like to join us for this program? Please contact me at the Admiral Nimitz Foundation, 328 E. Main St., Fredericksburg, Texas 78624 tel 830 997-8600. thank you, Mrs. Marty Kaderli, Membership Secretary Keywords: |

RENSHAW JACKET |
| JIM WOOD wrote on April 20, 2004 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: INTERESTED PERSON Comments: I have a black wool navy "CPO" ? type jacket that I purchased in 1972 -74 in Pittsfield Massachusetts. It has a beautifully rendered needlepoint of a tiger on the back of the jacket. Emblazoned over the top of the tiger is RENSHAW 499, and under the tiger is written: JAPAN There are two zippered front top pockets, over the right one is a five character name in what must be Japanese. Can anyone tell me what the tiger emblem is about, and if there is a particular battle this commemorates? I just found this website. After finding this "old friend" in my closet, I "googled" the name Renshaw499 and found you folks. I've read Don McElfresh's letter, Thanks Don. I'd love to know more from anyone about what this tiger is about. Feel free to email me. Thank you. Jim Keywords: |

THOMAS W. SHIRLEY - KOREA |
| THOMAS SHIRLEY wrote on January 3, 2003 City and State: PROSPECT HEIGHTS IL Unit: Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN - KOREA Comments: My father was on the Renshaw during the Korean War. I believe he played a part in an A-Bomb test off the Bikini islands. He actually witnessed the test and to shield his eyes he put his forearm over his closed eyes. The explosion was so bright that he saw the bone in his arm like an x-ray. He also helped remove some of the islanders and their livestock after the test because the fallout headed where it wasn't supposed to. Anyone remember this? Also, he has a fond memory of stealing a picture of "Laylani" from the ward room of the USS O'Brien. The two ships were docked in Pearl Harbor at the time and it would have been early 1954. RENSHAW A FATHER AND SON ISSUE |
| THOMAS ATNIP wrote on February 6, 2001 City and State: GILBERT AZ Unit: USS RENSHAW DDE499 1967 TO 1969 Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My father was the Engineering Officer on the USS RENSHAW in the 50's and served during the time when the Renshaw's distinguished service record showed that a small ship was only as stong as the crew that served on her. So it was the crews that made her as stong as she was. I had the honor of serving on the USS RENSHAW in the engineering department approximetly 17 years after my father. The greatest time I ever had aboard ship was to have my father sail on a dependant cruise off the shore of Oahu and to see the smile on his face. I know that he put his life on the line for his country as many did with him during the Korean War. I just hope my time aboard her was as honorable and gave homage to those hundreds of brave sailors that sailed before me. The Renshaw was finally decommissioned after her last cruise to Viet Nam in 1970. She sits on the bottom of the Ocean off the coast of Hawaii serving Neptune as a habitate for the underwater environment. Although she is at rest her memory will always shine bright as long as there are destroyer sailors that sprend their time defending this great country on the oceans of the world.
