Comments: Don House, I remember Mr. Lee from the Redstart. He was good people. He was one of the better officers on board. I also knew Jack Poe, Dusty Rhodes, Arlen Weis BM1 and Dempsey Morse EM3. They were all good shipmates. But over the years I have lost track of them all. As for a reunion, if I hear from enough people we can try to put one togeather.

Comments: I served aboard the Redstart from December 1955 to Sept. 56. I served with a En1 named Nicholsen who I understand made Chief when he shipped over. I also served with an EM3 named Atlas. There was an EN3 named Dempsey Morse. I am curious if any of these men are still alive. I would appreciate it if anyone having knowledge about them would email me and let me know.

Comments: I am the granddaughter of the woman who christened the minesweep Redstart. She was Zella Kate Dorsey who at the time was chosen because she had 6 children in the armed services.
My Aunt Elizabeth Ann Dorsey was maid of honor at the ceremony and is still living and remembers it well. Just thought someone would be interested in this piece of Redstart history

Comments: Just happened to discover your post to vets of the USS Redstart. I was First Lieutenant/Minesweep Officer from March, 1954 thru August, 1955. The "Smitty" that you referred to was a Bos'n 1st class and my acting Chief Bos'n, replacing Chief Stowe, much to my relief. Smitty was a great cumshaw artist, replacing a sunken pig one night in Sasebo, and nobody knew how he did it or where it came from.
LCDR Robert Foreman was Captain who was replaced by Doyle shortly before I mustered out. Other names you included were George Wolfe, Electronics or Operations Officer, I believe, and Fred Ide, who mustered out in Sasebo. The exec was known as "Navy Davy" Pogue, and not very popular among the officers. The Engineering Officer was Ben Lee, and his assistant EO was Clarence Schwerin, a small round Ensign who was famed for drunkenly stepping off the gunwale of an LCVP not yet quite alongside while returning from Liberty. My assistant was Ensign Glen Rhodehorst, who's fame was testing the whistle and horn backwards, much to the embarrassment of the Captain. I think Ackerman was the Petty Officer 2nd class who advised me that we were steaming into the Seaplane take off strip while I was trying to dock at night in San Diego. Fortunately the PBY pilot saw us and shut down before disaster.

Others of your name recollection are familiar, but at my age I can't put the faces to the names. I can't even put your face to your name, but I certainly thank you for bringing me fond memories of my days and shipmates in the Redstart. Had I to do over, I just may have become a career office

Comments: Hi all you Redstart Veterans. I remember a lot of you that were on the Redstart between July 1952 and March 1955, I signed up for an additional year to get two years shore duty with Cominpac on Terminal Island. I have kept in contact with Bridges, Tempelton, Schuster, and Wright over the years, but certainly have not forgotton any of you. Murray Wright passed away several years ago, three daughters, Seth Bridges passed away approx. two weeks ago, five daughters. Templeton keeps in touch with Weeks, and told me that Johnson and
Phillips had passed away. Here are some of the names I remember off the top of my hat. Speer, Roddy, Lewis, Ackerman, Ford, Page, Long, Layton, Fergerson, Wolfe,Baysinger, Ide, Foreman, Hackett, Miller, Jones, Dithers, Doyle,Stephens,Jamison,Smitty, and Cameron. Naturally there are others that I remember. I imagine all of you remember (NICH) and (Key Brooke Jig). Hope everybody is doing well and that I hear from some of you, maybe I can provide additiona info. I have two Daughters, one Son, Five Grandkids with another one on the way. My health is good, no pills.
