T.R. HOWARD LTJG CAPT. OF USS REDHEAD AT WONSAN |
| SCOTT HOWARD wrote on June 4, 2010 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My Uncle T.R. Howard was the commanding officer of the USS Redhead on Oct. 14th thru the 24th 1950 At this time on a mine sweeping of the harbor of Wonsan a US mine sweeper hit a mine and was dissabled . My Uncle and his Crew went in to rescue the survivors. The Ship Recieved a Presidential Unit Citation for their actions and My Uncle recieved the Silver Star that was awarded to him on the USS Missouri. My Uncle pasted away and I recieved his personal papers . . . He was a man that never blew his own horn and I am sad not to have known all that he had done till he was already gone. If there are any members of the crew are their families that would like copies of the Original Presidential Unit Ciatation or Pictures of the rescue . . . My Uncle had all of these in his archives as well as the papers on why he recieved the Silver Star . Mermorial Day just pasted and brought the thought of sharing this Info to others that served or their families if they have moved on to that Heavenly Muster that waits for all . . . | ALVIE YATES wrote on March 14, 2010 City and State: EUGENE OR Unit: USS REDHEAD AMS-34 Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: Keywords: Served on board the Redhead from April 1952 to July 1953, made many friends and would like to hear from any who would like to communicate with me about the times we spent together becoming a big happy family, who took care of each other during those trying times of war, many things have changed for the crew during that time, and there is a great possibility that many have passed from this life, and I pray to God that He has forgiven them and the ones who remain for their foolishness, and has prepared a place for those who have recieved Him, I know that he has saved me and nothing would make me happier than to see the whole crew of the Redhead standing and waiting for reville and morning muster, just inside the pearly gates of heaven. I hope to hear from any who will very soon, you know that all of us are about the same age, and I am 78, and if I don't hear from any, I will see you on the other side. respectfully Alvie Yates SKG2 |

| CHARLES F. MITCHELL wrote on September 22, 2000 City and State: MIDDLETOWN NY Unit: USS LUZON ARG-2 Service or Relationship: - Comments: USS LUZON ARG-2 Keywords: USS Readhead AMS 34, I remember the Redhead used to tie up along side us [USS LUZON ARG-2] in Sasebo, Japan for repairs during 1951. If I recall right, you had a sprider monkey, that was a SOB when someone would try and get out the read hatch. Always used to play with his monkey size manhood. We use to drink beer at the EM Club at Fleet Landing if my mind lets me recall those days. I recall, again with this old salty sea mind, the time we had to have a 24 hours turn around on repairing the Redhead. I was the Educational Yeoman, also suppling the crew with all the rating books they needed for advancement. Also recall she never came back after that 24 hour repairs we made to her. Any one that was aboard her in 1951 do give this old salt a call at usschief@frontiernet.net Should you have a picture of her, DO by all means attach it to the email. Thanks guys, for all the good and also the bad memories from the Redhead. She was a fine boat. I ended up in 1982 to being asigned to the USS AFFRAY MSO511 minesweeper out of NTC NEWPORT, RI. At that time I was a First Class Stew-burner. I retired from the navy as MSC [Mess Spealist Chief] You like SOS, I make a great dish of SOS with eggs for breakfast. Sign me The Old Salty Little Sea Mouse, Chief Charlie Mitchell USN-Ret. living in Middletown, New York. |
