Comments: My Dad served on the Reclaimer... not real sure of the years, but I believe it was between '50 - '53. His name was John Loberg, so if anyone served with him, sure would love to hear any stories you are willing to tell. Dad passed away in 2000. My brother and I are trying to put together any stories, pictures or anything to pass on to my brother's son so he can know about his Grandfather. We do have a woderful picture of the Reclaimer that was one of Dad's prize possessions. Dad had attended many Navy reunions before his passing so was in touch with a few of his Navy friends. Thanks.

Comments: I was stationed on the Reclaimer from February 1982 to January 1985. Made two westpacs on her and in 1983-84, we were midpac's softball champions defeating the largest ship stationed in Pearl Harbor at the time. (USS Jason)It's Ironic cause we were one of the smallest ships in the harbor even though we were actually stationed on the Hickam side of the island. I served under ship captains R.L. Owens and J.M. Evans during that timeframe. We conducted a number of salvops even recovering two bodies from an FA-14 that crashed in the pacific, and participated in joint military exercises with the Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy on a couple of ocassions. I would love to hear from any of my shipmates from that period and enjoy reading all the entries from the other Reclaimer brothers.

Chris:
I was also a diver stationed on the Reclaimer during Ed Starkey's tenure in the Reclaimer dive locker. I was stationed on the ship from 1987 - 1990. I believe you came on board shortly before I left.
I would be interested in the book about Ed. Please e-mail me with the information at PJPerkins2003@Yahoo.Com

Comments: I was a diver on board the USS Reclaimer from 1990-1992. Soon after I was sent to MDSU-1 in Honolulu, the reclaimer was decommed and placed in West lock of Pearl Harbor in the "mothball" fleet there.
I am working on a book about the Reclaimer when i was on board. It is called Starkey's Boys after the MDV Ed Starkey. It should be available in 2005. Please let me know if you would like to be notified when it is out.

Comments: This is purely for information. When I was researching the plaque I obtained and I am now selling it on e-bay. I would be expecially pleased if it ended up with a true collector with links to the vessel. It had been presented to my mess, The Royal Military Police in Hong Kong but was sold to me when we disbanded in 1997.

Comments: I believe my father, Marion C. Kilpatrick, was a commander of the Reclaimer sometime during the 50's, but I'll have to do a bit of research to pin that down. He enlisted in the Army in 1928 (lying about his age at 14!) and after 6 years left the Army and enlisted in the Navy. He eventually became a Master Diver and then a Warrant Diver by the beginning of WW-II. He was commissioned an LDO/Salvage in WWII, but his designator was changed to unlimited duty after the war. He retired as a LCDR in 1958. He commanded several salvage ships and fleet tugs from 1946 - 1955.

Comments: I am a former crew member of the USS Reclaimer and served aboard her from 1951 to 1952. I am looking for old shipmates.
I saw service on the Reclaimer 1950 to 1952. To my recollection on going to the aid of the USS Walke that hit a mine, We got the call around 0400hours in the morning that caught us with only half the crew on board as we were on port & starboard liberty. We were prepared to tow her in but she had power and emergency steering so we escorted her back to Japan.
One of the other functiom that we volunteered for was transporting ROK and British Royal Marines for raids on Songjin and picking them up the next day with North Korean prisoners.
I'm proud to say that I earned 3 of the Reclaimers 6 battle stars.

The USS GRAPLE is (ARS-7), a Diver class rescue/salvage ship. I served
on her sister ships, USS GRASP (ARS-24) & USS BOLSTER (ARS-38).
The salvage navy was heavily engaged in the Korean War, close in, and
often under fire. They provided salvage support to the Army, Navy,
Air Force & Marines, Search & Rescue, UDT & special ops operations,
towing, interdiction/patroling, Humanitarian and many other tasks.
I have listed below the records of the eight Diver Class ARS's that I
have certain knowledge of their participation in the Korean War. Many
of them were also WWII and Vietnam veterans.
In the Salvage Navy, we understood ARS not to mean Auxiliary Rescue &
Salvage, but rather "Always Ready Ships". If there was a dirty job to
do, we were the one's to call upon. We paid for this respect in sweat
and blood.

USS RECLAIMER (ARS-42)
Displacement 2,160 Length 213'6" Beam 43'0" Draw 14'0" Speed 16 k
Complement 120 Armament 4 40mm Class Diver
Reclaimer recommissioned on 1 December 1950 for service in the Korean
conflict and, after shakedown off San Diego towed AP-23 to Hawaii.
Arriving at Pearl Harbor on 12 February 1951, she then proceeded on
across the Pacific touched at Majuro and Guam, and reached Sasebo, Japan
29 April.
On 8 May Reclaimer got underway to aid SS Muhlenberg Victory, grounded
on Uku Shima, an island near Sasebo. With the aid of Grasp (ARS-24), she
refloated the ship a week later and on 27 May towed YO-179 to Pusan,
Korea. She then steamed to Wonsan for patrol duties between that port
and Songjin. In mid-June, she escorted Walke (DD-723), damaged by a
mine, to Sasebo. Six days later, she returned to Pusan to tow the
burning merchantman Plymouth Victory, back to Sasebo where the fire was
extinguished. During August Reclaimer assisted in minesweeping and laid
buoys in Wonsan Harbor. On 7 September, she refloated the beached
Japanese LST Q 081 at Kangnung, Korea. On 10 October, with Yuma
(ATF-94), she towed the Royal Navy's hospital ship Mairne which had
lost a propeller, on a westward passage through the crowded and narrow
Shimonoseki Straits. This was the only hospital ship supporting U.N.
forces at that time.
On 22 January 1952, she departed Yokosuka to return to her homeport,
Pearl Harbor, where she remained until 21 October. Returning to WestPae
with YC 104 in tow, Reclaimer reached Sasebo on 17 November.
On 2 December she arrived at Sokeho Hang, Korea, to rescue two LST's
aground in heavy seas. With one of the LST's in tow she reached Sasebo
on 18 December. After brief duty with the Wonsan blockade force,
Reclaimer took SS Gulf Haven in tow while she was foundering in a
typhoon, and successfully brought her to Japan.
Reclaimer continued to operate in Japan and Korea until returning to
San Diego on 25 July 1953.
Reclaimer earned six battle stars for Korean War service and one
battle star for Vietnam.
Respectfull Submitted,
