| CHARLES GOWANS wrote on July 12, 2004 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: UNCLE'S USS PURDY SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: Greetings I'd be very interested in any and all information any of you may have on my Uncle, GEORGE DIORKA. All that I know is that he served on the Purdy (Korean War or just after). He was a Machinist's Mate (don't know what rank he might have been at the time). That is the extent of my info, anything at all, no matter how small, would be of great interest to me. Thank you for your consideration. PN1(AW) Chuck Gowans, USNR Keywords: USS PURDY |

WORLD TOURS |
| MORRIS PLUMMER wrote on June 9, 2003 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: - Comments: I would like to mention that the USS Purdy, DD 734 based in Newport, RI had 2 complete world Cruises during the Korean War. I myself made 1 1/2 of those cruises. Purdy, as far as we can tell is the only Atlantic based Destroyer to make 2 world Cruises and it was done in a 25 month time span. We may have been the only Destroyer in the whole Navy to do such a thing. I would appreciate hearing from any other Destroyers that made 2 World Cruises and to top it off they were in opposite directions. Quite a feat.
