Comments: I served in the Point Cruz for eighteen months from the last of 1952 until the first of 1954. I was a Quarter Master 3rd class when I came aboard and left the ship to be discharged as a QM-2. I was the special sea detail and general quarters helmsman for most of my time aboard. I learned to steer the ship under the careful tutilage of C. J. Olbright, QMCS. I can't say enought about what a wonderful man Capt. Hayward was. He was a father figure to a lot of us young sailors who had a chance to work with him. (I turned 21 while aboard the Point Cruz.)

Comments: I served aboard the Point Cruz 1953-1955.
I was at the throttle in main engine control when the typhoon struck the ship. We were ordered to flank speed, and the after engine room was ordered full astern. The rudder angle indicator went to port (Left). The skipper was trying to pin-wheel the carrier to avoid the typhoon, but it was to late. The typhoon tore all of our life rafts of the starbord side of the ship, and caved in all the sponson doors on that side, also, the forward end of the flight deck was ripped up, as a wall of water went over the flying bridge, and that's over 80 feet above the water.
Water in our bildges washed all the way up to our overhead as the ship nearly capsized. It was a frightening experience for a while.

They kept remodeling the ship but finally we went to San Diego, then headed for Japan with stops in Hawaii, Guam, Okinawa. I was an AG-3 in the weather office but before leaving for Hong Kong was transfered to Pensacola, FL in 1953. Looking for any Aerographer's that were on the ship during 1951 to 1953. Comments: Dad passed down his cruise of VS-21 and the year book dates and pictures the crew, events etc. from April 27 through November of 1954...the last pictoral portrayal before going into moth-balls at Bremerton Washington.

Dad flew a sky-raider with the boys named after my mom,....Plane Jane...I think from a picture in the yearbook and comment that a poor landing hit my Dad's plane and several others may have been damaged.

When I was in fourth grade Dad brought back some u-control model airplanes and got me started in a hobby that was popular on the carrier.

Brief mention is made of 'days of evasive action with typhoons...grace and helen the aggresors, and the point cruz sailing at last into the beautiful harbor of hong kong and kowloon.

Dad's exec at the time was Lcdr. N.R. Charles. He had come to the squadron as executive officer in June of l953. I have many carrier memories as a kid and even going on board to see the dentist, Hugh Parker, a good friend now from the past living in Sonora California.

Please feel free to get in touch I you knew Dad.

Comments: My father, Ed Erwin, served aboard the USS Point Cruz as a boiler tender. Sadly, my father passed away in Nov. 2004. However I do have a logbook that he kept that has the following entries: Aug. 3, 1954 - Plane crashed into 5 other planes on flight deck and caught fire. Sept. 12, 9:00 a.m - Arrived Yokosuka, Japan. Sept. 13, 6:00 p.m. Got underway because of typhoon.

Those are the only references to either event. Hope that helps a little.

Comments: Dear Friends of the USS Point Cruz,

My Father Geaorge A. Workman served aboard the USS Point Cruz during the Korean War. I have a phot album, yearbook from his time aboard the Point Cruz. George died when I was only 16 and therefore I never knew much about his time in service. I believe he mentioned that the men of the Point Cruz used to fly model airplanes on deck. If anyone knew my Father, I would deeply appreciate any contact.

My son is now in Navy boot camp and will serve aboard an aircraft carrier. I would love to share stories of his Grandfather while aboard the Point Cruz.

Thank You all for your service to this Great Nation!

Comments: Hi to all interested in this story. I've seen lots of queries on this website from people wondering about "the rest of the story," how baby Danny is- ( it is 50 years later, so he's 50) and if the story is all true.

Let me fill you in.
In 1999, Dan Keenan and I worked together to create a short version of this story, which appears in Chicken Soup for the Parent's Soul. It is as accurate as the information we had at that time allowed. We then began researching to write the full length book. It is about 2/3 done now - hopefully it will be out late in 2004. It will be filled with original photos and images of all the key heroes in this story. It is truly a magnificent true, and very American story.
Any questions, please e-mail me - janet@canadiansoul.com

Thank you very much for your interest!

Comments: My dad EN3 Robert E Henry was on the Point Cruz from 52 thru 54. He passed away in May of 93 after nearly 30 years of battling muliple sclerosis. He spoke often of his days on the Point Cruz though he wasn't thrilled to be in the service per say he always enjoyed teling stories of his sea days. I was hoping that someone somewhere remembered him. I have some of his original letters that I was able to get from his grandfathers effects long after he died and they mention going to Japan, Hong Kong, China and Korea.

Comments: I am a teacher trying at a small private school with no government funding. I'm trying to create a primary source section in our school library consisting of veteran interviews, as veterans'experiences teach us far more than the textbook does! Any veterans who are willing to be part of our project should contact me at moreray@juno.com for an interview form. THANKS!!!!

We also compare movies to true historical accounts. My class recently enjoyed seeing 1000 Men and a Baby (thanks to a Korean veteran who responded to our project), and we would like to verify the truthfulness of the movie. Point Cruz veterans are encouraged to contact me by e-mail in order to receive an interview form.

Comments: I'm writing on behalf of my father, Willis W. Williams, of Pennsylvania. He's very ill in the hospital (Phoenixville, PA) and when I go home to visit this weekend, I wanted to see if I could find any info on the Internet about his ship -- the Point Cruz that he has spoken so often of. When I found this website, I was just amazed. I'm printing it out and taking it home to read to him.
