Capt.William John vanEe (deceased)

Comments: While researching the history of the first navy jack flag that I'm currently flying at my home I ran across the fact that this flag from 1775 flew over the USS Praire for 11 years as the most senior commissioned ship in our navy. I remember my dad Dr. William John vanEe recalling his fond memories of his service on the Praire. He was a Navy Dental Officer who may have been a Commander or Captain after WWII. He told me of playing scrabble with the ship's Captain while sunning themselves on voyages across the oceans. Is that true and do any of you veterans have any memories of my dad that I can share with his survivors ? Thankfully , Jerry van Ee (Retired)

LOOKING FOR KOREAN WAR BUDDIES

Comments: Hello All,

I am interested in locating old buddies I served with in the ET gang aboard the USS Prairie from 1953 to 1954. Anyone remembering me, please respond. We alternated between San Diego and Sasebo, Japan. The ship was in Sasebo most of the time during that period and made one quick trip around the coast of Korea after the Armistice was signed.

Comments: I just wanted to throw out there that I acquired a black velvet USS Prairie jacket (old) with Hawaii, Wake, IS., Marcus Is., Hong Kong, Subic Bay, and Sasebo embroidered on the front along with a patch that reads "Far East Cruise", the IC Gang along with several pictures surrounding that.

Foundry aboard USS Prairie AD-15

Comments: I served on the Prairie from 1953-57. Willie B. Pike was First class P.O. when I went aboard and I was First Class P.O. when I left in Rastunra,India. Left on the USS Roberts DD823 Took me two months to get back to the good old USA. My tour of duty was three years nine months four days all Sea duty. I retired after 27yrs at Texas Instuurments & Raytheon Inc.

Comments: Recently, my best friend's mother passed away. Included in her personal belongings were numerous pictures of the USS PRAIRIE, (some drawn, some stamped photos.) With those, are several original pictures, (most are dated February 1944, some not dated at all.) of VIPS, military personnel celebrating Christmas aboard the ship, crew photos, or photos of soldiers coming ashore to unidentified islands. There are also many pictures of US soldiers on that tour who are integrating with those islanders I referred to.

As I stated, we're not certain who these soldiers are or where they were touring at that time. Perhaps one of you USS PRAIRIE buffs may be able to guide us in the proper direction? We would appreciate it.

Her grandfather's name was Ralph Vaughn Peterson and was a Chief Special Artificer Optical. (?) He also retired May 26, 1947, after 20 years of service.

FYI: There was also an old photo envelope which held several USS PRAIRIE Crew group photos. (Mostly Christmas photos) On that envelope are the names of soldiers that these pictures were dispersed to, we assume, and these are their last names. Reynolds - Block - Hill - Hubert - Anderson - Dickinson - Rayman - Ringer - Bowles? - Henry - Curry - Cohen - Mauro - Miller - Thomas and Chambless?

Comments: My dad James Stavros served on the USS Prarie during the Korean War. He was injured July 29, 1952. He had been welding in the ship's boar when there was an explosion and was injured in the face and shoulder and lost sight of his left eye. LUNG CANCER LINK

I don't smoke and have no family history of the disease. I can only link it to asbestos exposure during my time onboard. I found your name on a list of USS PRAIRIE crew members on the USS PRAIRIE Ship's Roster internet website. Our firm represents the family of Mr. James Williford who served with you on board the USS PRAIRIE in the 1960's as a Boiler Technician.

I am writing this letter to ask for your help. Mr. James Williford recently was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a form of cancer that the doctors agree was caused by Mr. James Williford's occupational exposure to asbestos. He and his family are now involved in an asbestos lawsuit, against the manufacturers, suppliers and civilian contractors. We are not pursuing the government in this action.

Unfortunately, Mr. James Williford does not know the names of all of the various asbestos containing materials and the equipment that were used on the USS PRAIRIE. You may remember asbestos-containing products, such as:

Comments: I served on the USS Praire during the Korean War(Conflict as they called it then) from 1950-1953. During this period our port of calls were Sasebo,Yokosuka and Beppu Japan. In addition we were in Hawaii, San Francisco, Hunters Point(dryock)and San Diego our home port. Comments: The USS Prairie was my first, last and only ship. I am proud to say that I served aboard the Prairie from Jan. 1962 where I joined her at Hunters Point CA as a Seaman Apprentice (SA) - until Jan. 1966 where I left her in San Diego CA as an Instrumentman 3 (IM3). I made 3 WestPac cruises while aboard.

Comments: I served on the Prairie from dec.75 until aug.79.I was a 17 year old kid who had never been away from Indiana. I grew up on this ship! And man what memories I have. A lot of people knew me as PAT.(a nickename given to me on the ship) I just wanted to see if anyone remembered me? I can not believe its been over 20 years. Comments: My dad served on the USS Prairie. He was very proud of that. He did go to one of the reunions held here in San Diego. But one of the best memories that I will always remember was seeing that beautiful ship out on the San Diego bay everytime we were on old 101 and the gleam I'd see in my Dad's eyes. I was born while he was in Japan and that's the ship he walked off the first time he saw me. Thanks for the memories. God Bless.

Comments: Boarded the USS Prairie AD-15 on 28 July 1951 Relieved Ltjg Kendall, communications officer for flag. Only on board a short time, as the flag moved to the USS Toledo, went to Korea, etc. Remember the Prairie as being a very comfortable ship.

Comments: I served on the USS Prairie AD15 from April of 1953 until April 1955. I was a storekeeper (SK2) there. During my time on the ship, President & Mrs. Sigmund Rhee same aboard ship to thank the captain and crew for assistance to the ROK naval vessels engaged in firing against communist shore batteries. The Prairie was given the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the shipboard members received the UN defense service medal.
